IMO there's no substitute for muddling the mint and lime wedges together, even if it's a quick 3 second muddle. It seems to me that simply churning the two together doesn't do a thorough enough job of releasing and then blending two very distinct flavors. I also cut the amount of syrup in half and add a splash of triple sec (which may or may not get me flamed on here). This guys great though, regardless. Cheers!
Muddling mint on mojito is bar basics, do you want the flavor of the mint or not? Its like putting a peel without squeezing it, no point on putting it then. And it should'nt stick on your teeth if you know how to muddle it. Actually the very classic way to do a mojito won't leave the lime wedges into the glass but just use the juice. Very efficient service though
woow, mojito with no muddling at all!! and he putting way too much ice n not enough soda.... if u muddle ur mint, n lime in simple syrup together and shake em with ice.... will come out much better mojito!!
Thanks for sharing these videos. I'm not into bartender, nor do I have bartender friends, so these videos help a great deal, then I'll adapt them to suit my taste :)
For all those complaining this is not the correct way to make a Mojito I'd like to say that you sound like you're arguing what's the "correct" position to make sex, it's silly, there are loads of them! ;)
thank you very much for the quite fast yet very informative video.
I personally tried a mojito at a bar in Switzerland... every sip I took had me crunching a little bit on some sugar..I do not know if it was supposed to be like so I simply liked that idea and I loved the mojito for it.
you have NO IDEA how many people cannot make this simple drink! Thank you for this video, i hope people can finally understand how a PROPER mojito is made! SHEESH!
so, you've been behind the bar for 7 years now and clearly you still dont know anything... in what way does he suck? because he's doing an instructional video and not throwing bottles around all over the place? please, grow up
7 years... need a medal? this bloke does a great job with the demonstration videos.. yes there are a heap of different ways to make the same drink, unfortunately there are a heap of fuckwits like yourself that feel they have to shoot someone down to make them feel like the worlds greatest tender. nice one
So Im am sick of the jelously and childish comments. These are great basic, classic, upper end recipes. First you should post the number of years you've been behind the bar, and what you gross in alcohol sales per night. Then maybe respectfully suggest alternatives. So many fake bartenders giving lame, ivory tower, advice its shameful.
If you're working on a high traffic bar then you dnt have time to muddle, shake, strain, prep and serve so you do it in the glass like this. At the end of the day, it's entirely up to you what you do. but one thing i would change is the rum. havana club 3 makes my fave mojito.
Mojito in 1 minute, great if you're the boss and time is money, but what if they then try and charge you £10?? I make them like that when I'm a bit worse for wear late on in the night / morning. Where's the love gone? Muddle the lime, mint on the bottom at all times or else it just rises like it did in the vid. I've lived in South America for a while and sugar water isn't the kind of stuff I'd like to see being served up in a cocktail bar it's cheating. He plugs it alot, he must be commission.
i usually start by muddling mint, lime juice, simple syrup, and a small amount of crushed ice to begin with, then i add the rum and soda water, shake it, and top it off with a touch of sprite and garnish. sounds better?
i agree with you. i just squeeze and strain the fresh lime juice into the glass, put the brown sugar in and stir until it's solved. then i slightly muddle 1 or 2 mintsprigs in the glass, fill it with ice and pour over rum and soda.
There will always be a massive debate over muddling mint, the Bacardi way says to muddle the mint but over bruising mint leaves can cause them to taste bitter, and shred and no one wants bits of mint in their teeth. If you must muddle the mint, a couple of gentle twists will do the trick.
God knows, who actually said that we need to muddle the sugar, mint & lime!! After all, mint's fragrance is very powerful!! I believe that we need to just stir the squeezed lime juice/zest with the mint leaves...and without bruising them....
CLEAN FINGERS! There is no point using loads of lime, lime is used to balance the drink if you use additional lime wedges then you will just have to add more sugar to balance it out. The main flavour of a mojito is mint, not lime, so extra wedges would mean extra mint, and with all this lime sugar and mint where do you plan on putting the rum? We are making a cocktail here not a salad.
@shakertv Good point with regards to the lime. However, for those people here in the States who are generally not concerned with authenticity, lime is a much more agreeable taste than mint, so in that case I'd incline the balance of flavors more towards lime. What I typically make is a drink that has a strong rum base, complemented with equally strong lime/sugar flavors and a noticeable hint of mint. Also a bit more soda. I'm just using the average american bar-goer as a standard here.
people have so many ways of making mojitos this version is not wrong its just there are other ways of making them for example some people like to muddle there mint with the lime n sugar but some people argue the mints taste is disguised by the lime juice. also some people like to use better rums such as havana especial. as long as ur customer is happy with it then uve made it right cos at the end of the day there the ones paying ur wage

Muddling the mint leaves makes them release bitter flavours which you don't want in your drink. Slightly bruising them through the ice like he did is absoluteley enough.
Also, muddling them will result in some tiny ripped off leave parts floating around in your drink, ready to rush up your straw. Ew. ;D

Man mojitos are GOOD, theres way worse harsh drinks. And his mojito actually looks way better than muddle mint versions(both are good tho).
lqprimetime 2 years ago
This is i guess his fast way, he has other videos and he does muddle and stuff. This is him doing it very fast.
The thing is there, i guess, is a ton of diff ways to make it, ultimatly its gunna be similar.
The one thing i do like out of miles' way is it preserves the mint better, looks like a nicer drink, no bits floating.
His other version he muddles lime and sugar, and then ices it and then either adds the mint or the rum and churns, then adds more ice and soda water.

Its a matter of preference. Obviously granulated demerera is harder to disolve because of the ice, so from a taste point of view syrup is better, but i like to crunch on a bit of sugar in a Mojito so i use a dash of gomme and just under a barspoon of demerara. You really only need to use demerera if you want to chew the sugar, or if you are in a hot country (like Cuba) so the sugar dissolves easier.

Hey there,
Its a personal thing really and bartenders and consumers vary greatly with the type of sugar used. Using syrup generally is a quicker more consistant way, however using granulated or demerara sugar will give a grittyness and difference in texture to the drink.
Try experiementing with all types of syrups and sugars, and flavoured sugars (vanilla, cinnamon, citrus)
hope this helps.
