Assumpta is usually very direct, but here she tries to goad Peter into opening up and talking to her. She's mortified that he may think she's "cold" (emotionally). Through his silent but passionately tormented gesture while holding her hand she realizes he's battling a deep inner conflict, but she can't discern what it is. Stunning writing and acting.
It bothers me that many people ascribe P&A's behavior to UST. Maybe more so for Assumpta, who has experience, but Peter lives in a higher state of consciousness and thinks about pure love and tenderness, while others think about sex. He knows he has nothing to feel guilty about; that's why he would tell Fr. Mac to mind his own business.
@dhvred That is Peter's hand brushing away Assumpta's hair. It's his awkward yet tender attempt to express the delicate affection he feels for her. He wants to touch her beautiful face as well, but he's so afraid and tongue-tied, so insecure and conflicted.
Oops, 2nd attempt -- Peter is paralyzed by fear and his awkward inexperience, and he's caught off guard by Assumpta's pointed reference. His head is full of things he wants to say to her, but he can't yet verbalize his conflicted feelings. He's also acutely aware of his responsibility within the community in his role as an ordained priest.
@sweetamyleigh I really think it is his hand. In the car, when Peter takes her hand, she has long fingernails which is not the case when her hair is brushed back. Also, it looks like Assumpta's jacket has ribbed cuffs, and the one brushing the hair back does not. Anyway, that's my take on the scene and I'm stickin' to it
The owl is also heard right before Peter walks in to help Assumpta during the "Glass of Wine" scene that later has them fighting. We wonder at what point in the whole series that Dervla and Stephen knew that Assumpta would be killed off and how that may have affected them and their acting.
I recently realized that's not his hand brushing the hair from her face. I was so dissappointed. You just want so much from these two.I know it can't end well but I would have like a little more acknowlegement and a lot less angst.
Supposedly the actress requested it. That way she couldn't come back. She was worried that she couldn't stay away from the show. Then again, in american shows it's never stopped anyone. They just come back as a twin sibling or something. LOL
Wouldn't it be great to have the sequence in Assumpta's kitchen the next day after Peter has talked to Father Mac. Thanks for all the great BallyK moments.

Some of the most UST-filled silence to grace television. Hand-touching has never been hotter.
One of the best scenes of the series.

one of the most powerful moments between them. First time when I realized that something will happen between them for sure
