In the process of forge welding, the iron must be prepared before the actual "weld" occurs. This would be to brush the scale away at "red" heat & then quickly applying your flux. Another reason is that some people like the finished object descaled (that flakey stuff falling off the heated iron)...the scale is best to scrape off with a brush (gets into the cracks or nooks) while the iron still has some heat.

Try with a toothbrush!!!!..... no seriously that's a simple hardwork brush that u can find in every Hardwere store, u should clean the surface from scales before apply any welding compound(I use borax or sea sand) and try the welding hammerblow.
sorry for my english don't know if I wrote that right :)
I like the horn on that anvil. Ive been looking at anvils and most seem to have a beefier horn...but I like this one.

very nice farriers anvil but leaving the hardy in the hole could end very badly for your tools and you.

Artist blacksmith with a farrier's anvil........? And leaving the cut off hardy in the hardy hole....not a good idea.

@TechnicusJoe Used to be a farrier. I liked making the shoes better than puttin' em on. Not to mention, the anvil doesn't buck as hard.
