You are correct... it is the MAD boom. MAD stands for Magnetic Anomaly Detector. It aligns itself with the earth's magnetic field and it can detect a large ferrous mass under the water.

Actually, the odd tail boom is the MAD boom - it has nothing to do with the sonobuoys.

i forgot to mention the odd tail boom is to pick up the signal from the sonar buoys it drops
