Wow look at that thing go. I just did a Holly stump and that thing was one tough SOB. Was a unit one size smaller than yours and had worn teeth??? I do a lot or routering and understand the tool pulling itself into the work and the problems that can cause.
@stoker20 Of the 2-3 grinders I've rented, this one had the sharpest teeth. You basically want each tooth to look like a D rotated 90 degrees, the flat part of the D is what makes contact with the stump. The more abrupt the edge from the flat part to the round part, the sharper the tooth. If you get a grinder and the flat edge doesn't look like a sideways D but more like an O, don't rent it, it is just WAY more work with the teeth are dull.
@partyman6666 It was about $200 US for a 24 hour rental. I usually try to rent on a Saturday afternoon so that if the rental shop is closed on Sunday, I can use the machine all Sunday, and then return it Monday morning for just a day rental (even though I've been able to use the machine for 1.5 days)
@philipjcaputo That's definitely well worth it. Good plan too with the rental over Sunday thing. I think, around where I live, it costs more than $200 to have someone come out and grind just 1 stump.
@partyman6666 it's totally a good deal. Check with some friends and split the cost of the unit. You might even be able to find a few people in your neighborhood who wouldn't mind having a stump ground down for way cheaper. You might even be able to pay for the cost of the rental with a few side jobs.
@56BUICKRiviera Thanks! I don't mind some constructive ideas on how to stump grind better. It isn't like the rental company gave me an hour long presentation on how to do it. I was happy to give it a go, and save some big time money by having friends help pay for the rental in return for grinding out their stumps.
@gtisoiv - woah, way to be so constructive in your criticism!
Something like a "you should really do XXXXX with the wheel, because it is more efficient" would have been more beneficial to everyone who reads the comments. And beneficial for me too.
@philipjcaputo Transportation= drive speed, your running the machine on fast revs by the looks of things, you need to run on slow, its dangerous running on high speed when cutting you can stall the engine
this guy has no idea how to grind a stump , in fact what he is doing is VERY dangerous, you should always grind from an edge inwards, never from the centre,as it can catch and jolt forward very violently!
I use ear plugs plus hearing protectors along with eye protection every time I grind a stump. I've got 40 to do next week. I've also used my machine a few times to remove deeply frozen ground off the top of graves that were being dug. Works like a charm.
He should of grinded the stump from the back to the front, not down the middle, definitely a beginner. Next time, start just before the stump and work down and move forward.
Look He's not wearing any saftey gear? 1: What person would do that 2: Your breathing the fumes and dust and dirt? Later in life your going to need to be on oxygen because of the fumes and dust 3: Get a Grind Zero Machine radio controlled and zero turn. watchitgrinddotcom "saftey comes easy"
@philipjcaputo Sorry I thought you was a hire shop promoting your business, my comments were a bit harsh, I would use the same machine, but try and get a better technique, there are plenty of vids on here showing how its done, you could always hire in a professional, if you have lots of stumps, I'd be getting prices for a day rate and be looking for the highest horsepower for my money
Ya, it can really build up on the big/high stumps with lots of material to grind. Sometimes you have to back it off and rake the chips flat. You did ok for your first time tho. :)
Wow, i'm glad they don't rent em around here, i'd lose some biz. If you ever do it again watch some of the experienced guy's videos on here first. It works alot better if you start at the front of the stump and work your way back. The center of the wheel should never go below the top of the stump.
Thanks for the tip! The only reason I started on the far end was because I didn't want to drive over all the material that is thrown toward the stump by the wheel.
needs more power

Stumps should NOT be ground from the middle like this, should start at one side and work away from the center,,,, just sayin

AND the moron is running the 352 on fast speed, it should be run slow for grindindg, and fast for transportation
celticraider1 1 year ago
@celticraider1 I don't understand, when I transported the machine, it wasn't running at all. It was sitting on a trailer.

@celticraider1 what you ment to say was slow down the slew (oil flow), not the revs
bodders1029 1 year ago
@celticraider1 You are wrong...I own one and use fast speed all the time. Obviously he didn't have a clue but, he learned.
