Yes i've used the Austria Microsystems chips and they are nice. Where do you get them for that price?

Does this scale out to control multiple matrixes? You might want to take a look at the MAX knock off chip, the AS1107PL, it's about $3.50 per unit. While not as cheap as the 595s, it's about 1/4th the cost of a MAX7221.

Did you ever get the library written? If so, I'd love to see it. (of course!!!)
