  • that dowsnt make sense?!

  • back when i was on this ship we fired a dummy torpedo and it turned around and hit us

  • @markushanson11 Dummy torpedoes dont' have a propulsion system nor a guidance system. Its common for it to 'squirt' after going into the water.

  • I was assigned to this ship in 1998 and served aboard until her decommissioning in 2003. As a former member of this ship's crew, I'm glad to see she's still contributing, even though she's the last of her kind. Go Foster, First Among the Finest!

  • I work on the test ship =] believe it or not it's real and it does work.

  • imma firin mah lazer!!!!!

  • Wonder what the pictures taken by the camera on the end of the arm looked like or was that the Laser ?

  • Thats the point of this demonstration,to prove that they can keep a powerful laser focused on a target in a meaningful military condition. ITs a proof of concept, and as soon as the FEL can be scaled at will,it means kilowatts of explosive power with the agility of an aesa radar.

  • good.now its time to take care of north korea.they r playing with dangerous weapon.

when they try their primitive ICBM next time,u should use this.ok?

  • very nice, in reality if they had 3 or four more of those lasers and put them in close to each other it would break down the material much faster. My guess is thats the trick, plus who knows how far away the ship is. Very cool tech.

  • I have a problem with believability... you have a target ship bobbing up and down at least 3 feet or so... another ship also bobbing up and down at least the same amount... and an optical system trying to maintain the correct positional location in three axises. The contact point isn't moving an inch.

Have you ever tried to point a laser pointer at a moving object? If they can do that... it's more impressive than the laser... lock on and put a 50mm round through it... and call it a day

  • @askjerry doubt the Navy all you want, bro. Your loss.

  • @askjerry

It's probably computer controlled, but I think your point about the 50mm is pretty valid.

  • @askjerry they shot down moving unmanned aircraft with something similar to this already :O

  • let's cut some taliban in half with this

  • @catbakkorrel And you really think by stop funding the Military that it is going to stop wars from being fought ever again? You need to lay off the drugs if you think that will ever happen. Mankind has been in conflict with each other even before we learned to walk upright, and it's never going to stop because it is in our nature. So you really need to get over this kumbaya, peace on earth bullshit. As long as there is humanity, there will always be war, pain, and suffering, no matter by whom.

  • I would have used the laser to burn the pirates/robbers who are in the ship/boat then destroying the engine.

  • well i rekon thats pretty cool.

  • So when can we expect this frickin thing to be attached to frickin sharks?

  • Northrop Grumman to cut 150 military laser jobs

Northrop said the layoffs reflect anticipated cuts in U.S. military spending, which the company expects will affect its orders, contracts and business volume.

that's our way, more wealth redistribution less defense.

    yes, we can. destroy America.

  • Why don't you people invest in stuff that doesn't kill, the world needs your money!

  • @sevensevenification We don't have any money.

  • @PussyPiston Here is a quote for you. Guess who said it: "I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office."

  • @PussyPiston Just to inform you, Eric Holder is the Attorney General and Robert Gates is the Secretary of Defense. Holder is not in charge of national defense, . You apparently think all Muslims are terrorists. Are all Christians Catholics? Are all Christians Baptist? Are all Christians Mormons? Are all Christians Methodists? I guess everyone does not think alike when it comes to religion, unless one is weak at mind and tries to convince themselves everything is the same.

  • Trust yamaha on the water!

  • And that's why I have a big johnson.

  • They should do that to all merc outboards-freakin lemons

  • U.S is always finding excuses to look good and rob some petroleum at the same time.

  • @max124891 Finally someone who thinks as me.

  • @max124891 petroleum powered lasers?

  • @newperve

True but still combat will be focused around the ships. In land wars, individual 'units' can be positioned anywhere. Think of it like this, islands are like planets and the sea is like space. The point I was trying to make was simply that the navy is best suited to develop the technology because it is closer (compared to air & army) to space ship use once in space. The technology being weapons and armour more than propulsion.

  • Do that to a persons head I want to see

  • @PussyPiston Are you a right wing wing nut? You do know that we went war with Afghanistan in 2001, right? You do know that diverting more than 150,000 troops into Iraq slowed progress down in Afghanistan, right? So what does Holder's speech have to do with winning a war that should have been won before he took office? As for your last remark, I think I just woke the asshole up.

  • @PussyPiston I asked a question whether genocide is next. The silly game could be that you have weak reading comprehension. If you had read the statement correctly you would have replied with an answer. You see, PC doesn't fight wars. People and weapons fight wars. So how does removing PC defeat the Taliban?

  • Scientist use dogs, cats and mice to test products on ..... And now sure... Let's use this kind of boat n kill all the fish... PEOPLE needs to think more about nature !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Are you kidding!?!?! These lasers are incredibly important. The nice slow burn is also very important if you think about it. We don't necessarily want to kill every pirate in Somalia but a burning boat will definitely make them meet our demands.

  • This is an HEL laser. It would burn right through a mirror -_-

  • now where the hell did I drop that cigarette???

  • IMMA FIRIN' MAH LASER!!!

  • So a large $20 mirror is all I need for a defense system?

  • What if the boat had mirrors all over it? Lol

  • Ha with more power I could really see that being intimidating though. Ha like ahh they're shooting lasers at us!!

  • I agree it took way too long to disable the engine!

  • Pew pew pew

  • where are the lightsabers?!

  • This is why I have a 100 mph speedboat... And why i keep my engines INSIDE the boat

  • Why the hell is my family paying the government so nerds can live out their video game fantasies??

  • What happens when you cover the motor with a mirror?

  • How's this better than a 50 cal through the block? Is this laser weather dependent and vulnerable to wave movement?

  • Hey...your boat is on fire.

  • Lol i bet china already has a better one...

  • holy shit that owns

  • Imagine that thing aimed at a persons head... Long distance microwave no thank you

  • OR you could just shoot it?

  • Thats cool

  • i predict that china will have a laser weapon just as advanced as this one within 4 to 5 years.

  • @hellzanetruesdale

Yep! And it'll be manufactured with interest money from U.S. debt to China, where's the U.S. have increased their debt towards China to manufacture it.

    It's a slavemaster - ownedslave relationship.

  • its gettin there

  • If your criticizing this laser you must not realize that the atomic bomb we dropped on japan that stopped us from invading them and loosing thousands of american lives was created just like how this laser was made, with tax payer money, and if that helps keep me safe ill give every single penny i own to stay safe........and free....

  • @ensignholmes safety is not only an illusion but it is also relative. My philosophy is if you rely on others to keep you safe you become weak and will fail to protect yourself should the need arise. Why let others do for you when you can do for your self? If countries really wanted to stop the drug flow they would put pressure on the countries that protect and produce these drugs and not just on the dealers/runners. also if you think your free read the patriot act, you may be surprised.

  • @ensignholmes the atomic bomb save more than thousands of US lives, more likely in the millions. But look at the cost of that weapon, not the monetary price but the moral one. tens of thousands of people died because of those 2 bombs and the effects of all the nuclear testing can still be seen today. sad that we have such a thirst for self destruction and such limited foresight .

  • I think a lot of pirates are going to be buying mirrors soon ..

  • It is necessary to enemies of the USA to distribute mirrors and the American military men will roast themselves!!!

Осталось врагам США раздать зеркала и американские военные поджарят сами себя!!!

  • I can't see laser

where is it? can anyone tell me?

  • круть!

  • ахринеть!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • north korea n iran developing dangerous toy so u guy should deploy this to near north korean n iran! develop this quickly! i am telling you!

    good luck

  • @singularku Dangerous toy? You mean like the ones Saddam had that they couldn't find?

  • @Toroa28 attacking iraq was obviously mistake but north korea is really crazy,i dont think us should attack northkorea but n korea should be contained! if they do anything funny, then they should be punished!

north korea, iran and israel are axis of evil

  • @singularku No they're not, You only believe this because it has been forced on you by media... Please take time to watch these two clips, watch?v=onNzrNEFs1E watch?v=7D7rRK_dbbE

  • @singularku Israel is an axis of evil? Yeah it's pretty evil to be defending yourself against radical muslims who live to suicide bomb your people. Israel=evil? HAH!

  • I think its cool how it demonstrates that it can pinpoint hitting a moving target...now make it handheld!

  • i was expected a bit more. But i guess some fire is cool too.

  • I feel like burning a 200hp Merc is overdoing it a little bit. I don't mind the government trying to protect me, but couldn't they have used a little smaller motor to burn? maybe even used?

  • And they talk about wasteful spending, why not burn up an old engine and not 2 new ones. And they want to cut Medicare. Hmmmmm...........

  • I hate poor people

  • We didnt just make this to make it, we made it to fight against pirates. :P

  • Spending money to build laser to kill african pirates: conservative.

Spending money to build laser to kill cancer: liberal.

  • @MajorRoy it's not to kill pirates. It's a non-lethal weapon. Also it will eventually be used to shoot down missiles. Protecting our country: conservative

    Whining like a bitch: liberal

  • @twistc7 Spending money on building non-lethal weapons that shoot down missiles (fired by who?): Conservative

Spending money on saving americans from lethal illnesses: Liberal

What I am saying is that this is not money well spent. But i guess you like to owe the chinese. Protecting the country by selling it to the creditors: Conservative.

  • @MajorRoy I absolutetly agree with you!USA became the world military number one power in 20th century, because of its economical power, as will China in this century! If USA wants to stay on top it should reform its economy, spending culture.(no more stupid wars=> China rents the worlds greatest copper mine in Afghanistan, while we're spending money to fight the Taliban off, how stupid can that be?),and make quality, cheap, economical export products...etc.If USA is in decline, also democracy is :(

  • So as long as the enemy boat is not moving, just bobbing in the water, we got 'em!

  • LOL they are surrounded by water

  • Psh, this is nothing. Deathstar FTW!!!

  • @MrFrawstedflakes the tech in star wars is really plasma tech and not laser.

  • @PussyPiston What's that? Genocide? Guerrilla warfare is really designed to baffle organized warfare. I don't really think PC has much to do with it.

  • I think when all is said and done, this will be the tool of choice for long range welding. Now if they can adapt it for under water welding, we got some thing going here.

  • i dont get what they are showing

  • hey awesome, maybe once we're finished inscribing the pledge of allegiance on the moon we can use this to cook meals for the 14% of the american population that budget cuts prohibit from having food security

  • Cover the motor with aluminum foil, and don't drive around at idle...

  • came here expecting rayguns, watched engine slowly catch fire, left dissappointed

  • I have a 1 watt hand held laser from wickedlasers and it will set paper on fire, burn your skin in seconds and a mirror works to deflect it. I was half joking with the comment anyway, and i have studied lasers in college, so, whether or not a mirror would work is really not known by us, since we have no way of checking. The thick black smoke is a good idea, and to Blankman, up your fat wazzoo with your idiot comment.

  • Hi, my name is Hatemyself McWhiner, and because I realize I'm a worthless git myself, I lash out at the society that supports me. I particularly like spending my time criticising the organizations that watch my back and protect the society that comes up with cures for cancer, so I'll weigh in with a comment that doesn't really contribute anything except my frustration that these guys are doing their job so much better than I could.

  • Now we can have freakin sharks with freakin laser beams attached to their freakin heads

  • I can see pirates defending themselves with disco balls. LOL

  • Yeah! Very high precision. Now lets see a demonstration where the target is moving at lets say 40 knots and taking on waves, moving up and down. It would be so inaccurate.

  • @mustangfgtan15 The 57 mm bofors gun can hit moving targets from a moving ship, with a laser this would be even easier since you don't have to compensate for trajectory, just stabilise the laser. The big problem is the power level, building a laser powerful enough to be useful.

  • JUST MAKE RIFLE & PISTOL VERSIONS & MY STAR WARS DREAMS CAN BECOME A REALITY!!!! :D

    YAY AMERICA! THANK YOU!

  • Children... It's not about what it is today but what it can lead to. Now you have the highest precision targeting, add some development & time (more powerful gun), sprinkle in a nuclear vessel (so enough power) & that boat would be toast. Hey, how about targeting from orbit? Scary stuff. Glad I'm on our side. :)

  • @Wakeboardjoe2 What it leads to tomorrow is being broke or world destruction. Snipers are pretty good at precision shooting and a barrage of bullets will keep small craft from approaching. I had heard years ago that the former Soviet Union was developing artificially induced lightining. What's next? Artificial earth quakes and tsunamis? Has anyone thought how long the Taliban has hung in fighting in Afghanistan and they don't have million dollar weapons?

  • @olzt100 They actually do have million dollar weapons...they have the ones we gave them :/

  • Just cover your engines in a steel box. Problem solved!

  • I thought the user of laser weapons was prohibited? Atleast against human targets.

  • oh, and you don`t need a thick piece of metal to repel this weapon, you just need a mirror !!!

  • @Worfff Just dont get in the way of the laser while holding that mirror

  • @Worfff A mirror will do nothing to stop such a laser.

No mirror is 100% efficient, and at these power levels, the fraction that leaks through is more than enough to remove all reflexive abilities of the mirror. In other word, the second the laser hits the mirror it will no longer be a mirror. A better counter measure would be a material that produces large quantities of thick smoke when it burn, the smoke will then act to block the laser, thus extending the time it takes to burn the target.

  • @Worfff you can't use a freaking mirror to reflect a laser like that idiot.

  • @Worfff A mirror wouldn't refract a laser that powerful. Even a perfect mirror would shatter once the laser starts heating up the dust on the glass, causing tiny breaks that become bigger breaks that become shattered glass.

  • @Worfff Ditto!

  • Oh, they`re talking about cutting the budget and here the Navy is playing with their new toy destroying brand new expensive equipment that tax payers bought them, isn`t that wonderful !!!!

  • Viable laser technology for military use is still a decade, if not decades, a way. But don't be mistaken: it WILL be perfected - it's just a matter of time. So in our lifetime, you're likely to see lasers mounted on C130 gunships to support ground operations. And if you're young enough, maybe you'll live long enough to see them mounted on Sattelites capable of knocking ICBMs out of the sky, or even capable of targeting persons on the ground. Go ahead and laugh now; this is just the beginning.

  • Why are we developing such humane weapons to fight such barbaric sub-humans?

  • the navy railgun has far far more potential than this

  • if you ask me any moron with half a brain would figure out that all you need to do to defeat this kind of laser is to build a thick metal shroud and sink it into the water to dissipate the heat. you could even use a thinner metal cover just to protect a ceramic shield, really anything that passes heat well would work, then just submerge it into the water to release the built up heat. after all they can't sustain that kind of power output forever

  • LAZZZZERRRSS!!!! Been waiting for this to become a reality since Goldfinger!

  • Mirror mirror on my boat, deflect that laser to stay afloat!

  • Hi, My name is the U.S. I like to spend trillions of $ finding creative ways to destroy or harm things or people. We don't like our best minds wasting their time researching dumb things like cures for cancer. Instead, we want them coming up with creative weapons with military applications, or working at Goldman Sacs, finding ways to make rich people even richer. The weapons we make will help protect the rich people from the violent uprising from the serfs & countries we exploit.

  • @wakeupscreaming maybe so, but everyone, "serfs" and all, would be much worse off it international commerce came to a grinding halt, which is what would happen if the US Navy weren't around keeping shipping lanes open. Somalian piracy would be the rule rather than the norm without first world navies.

  • @mixme1 sounds to me like an abusive relationship: "my abuse is good for you honey - just think what else would happen if i wasn't doing this to you"

How about: "go f yourself USA, i'd prefer to live freely and dangerously than live under your stifling 'benevelont omnipotence'"

  • @wakeupscreaming How would you get that cancer cure to other parts of the world without passable shipping lanes?

  • @wakeupscreaming Just go away. BTW, there are PLENTY of great minds all around the world working on a cure for cancer. It's just never going to happen. Oh, and the word is overpopulated anyway. Not all life is precious. I say let all those jerk-offs who're killing each other in the Middle East keep killing each other. They've been doing it for 2,000 years and they're not going to stop now.

  • @wakeupscreaming

You don't seem to know how much benefitial technologies and research that comes out of military development. It's not just all weapons my friend.

Better to have the US watching our backs rather then China or Russia, don't you think? Consider the alternatives.

  • @Andreazor whats the difference? were do you think the core components will be manufactured when this starts to be massed produced? not in the USA that's for sure!

  • @agentx250

I'm not sure how that is a responce to what I had written.

You don't seem to understand that you don't want political enemies to be making your weapons. China doesn't make weapons for the US, nor components for them. Stop being ridiculous, and if you really think that's what's going on support the claim with real information.

  • @Andreazor no not currently they don't but most of the electronics sector is located in asia. which makes the assumption that a large number of the components will come from that region. the way it works is: US gov contracts a 3rd party to suppply them, contrcted 3rd party builds items from parts they either A) make themselvs and/or B) buy from a outside source. this is all done by the lowest bidder too mind you.

  • @agentx250

Your assumption is completely baseless and clueless. I'm sorry but you really don't have a clue, I don't see a point trying to argue to you how a wheel rolls if I need to explain how a wheel is made first.

  • @Andreazor how is it baseless? look at the "made in" label of any high-end electronics product that is laser based i.e. dvd/blu-ray player, cd players and show me one that isn't made in asia. If you're too overcome by blind patriotism and can't see your country for what it is then I nor anyone else can help you.

  • @wakeupscreaming Not only that, but it doesn't even have a bright coruscating beam of light with accompanying 1970's SFX. What's the point of a laser gun without those?

  • @wakeupscreaming The United States Military Cancer Institute (USMCI) actually does exist. I don't know what "rich people" you are talking about and I'm sure you don't either. moron.

  • It's interesting how some would say "spend trillions to destroy/harm people/things", when something like this laser is EXACTLY the opposite. Let me put it this way:

Pre-laser Options when pursuing pirated or pirate boat:

    1) Fire 60mm on-board cannons.

    2) Fire more 60mm on-board cannons.

    Post-laser options:

    1) Fire 60mm on-board cannons.

    2) Use a targeted laser beam to disable the ship, harming none of the pirates and allowing for them to be captured uninjured, and put on fair trial.

    I know...

  • @wakeupscreaming LOL!!! Funniest comment ever!!! Question, are you a liberal by any chance? Plenty of people research cancer you idiot, but those people have degrees in the medical field not military engineering like the guys who built this laser. That's like saying "why can that kid get 100's on his math test but he sucks at Spanish?" They are completely different. Why did you get so many thumbs up your comment is retarded.

  • @yoyohihiyohi

    umad liberal?

  • @wakeupscreaming it's a non-lethal weapon and you can't take physicists and make them work on a biomedical project. That is like saying you are going to have an electrician repair your plumbing. Also your ignorant statement shows that you have no knowledge in economic affairs.

  • @wakeupscreaming These 'weapon' will likely be applied to many non-combative sciences in the future. Most of the technology we utilize today is the result of some military research.

  • @wakeupscreaming Yeah, it sucks being the only country in the world that spends money on our military. We're such bastards.

I like America less than most Americans but still, calm down man.

  • @wakeupscreaming

Hi I am also the US. You are a moron.

  • @wakeupscreaming Weapons and medical research are not mutually exclusive.

  • @wakeupscreaming

    Communists GTFO!

  • Comment removed

  • Everyone who thinks someone can defend against this with some handheld mirror bought at the Dollar Store is an idiot. Do you have any idea of the money and engineering that goes into the mirrors used in LASER technology? We're talking about precision and perfection that you can't even begin to comprehend. And if you have access to that money and technology then you won't be driving around in a little boat like that anyway.

  • Haha, a mirror. That's funny, everyone. I bet nobody at the Office of Naval Research thought of that.

  • @sethzenz Well...ya never know, lol

  • STOP SAYING THIS IS USELESS!!! AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THE LASER IS NEARLY INVISIBLE, SILENT AND CAN SET A BOAT ON FIRE A MILE AWAY.

  • @TheGTIAMHIJKLM15 it's only effective if the boat, or target, is made from some sort or resin. I highly doubt that it would be even remotely effective against a metal hull or other materials that dissipate heat well (since that's the main tech here, heat)

  • I could be wrong but I would think that after this tech is perfected and we can punch holes in things in a split second that it would be more cost effective to develop and use high intensity laser technology than to create, use and replenish torpedoes, missiles and other ammunition repeatedly.

  • @theoracle8191 it would depend on the application, you couldn't use this directly against personnel b/c of the Geneva convention. it would also depend on the way it is powered, if the power generation isn't efficient or sustainable then it would most likely be more cost effective to use conventional means.

  • NICE

  • Great! now lets make one that slices through other ships

  • lmfao...this is like Russians using a pencil in the Space while American (as always) spending 2billion dollars of tax money to come up with a super techie pen.

For F sake people, just use the damn torpedoes. Blow em to hell.

  • @jammerules80 That never happened.

  • @jammerules80 This is a myth that has been debunked.

  • LOL @ people who think this was specifically developed to deal with pirates. Stop being idiots.

  • Not exactly a death ray, huh? How many billions have we spent on this?

  • Because who knows better? Some commenter on youtube or the Office of Naval Research and Northrop Grumman...

  • WHATS TO STOP THEM POURING WATER ON THE FIRE PLENTY OF WATER THERE why cant you just blast them out of the water and be done with it rather than waste our tax dollars on this ???

  • Damn, what a waste of some perfectly good engines! In fact, if that whole RIB burned up...geez...I know a bunch of community sailing programs that could have used one. It would have been just as effective a demo to melt a hole in a 55 gallon drum, IMHO.

  • @SoCalJ24 lol...darn right.

  • @SoCalJ24 it's ok they were just Mercury engines.

  • @commhealy Ha! You're right. It would have been much worse if it were a nice pair of Honda's. Then I would have to write my congresswoman.

  • Pretty cool. But seems like a lot of fuss ti disable pirates. I'll take a well aimed 16 inch gun over that any day.

  • @commhealy

..well..of course..and there are so many active duty ships

armed with sixteen inch guns to choose from.

..seriously, waldo..a 16 inch shell vs what the "pirates" are driving these days?

    you fail.

  • this is dumb cuz all u have to do is fire photon torpedos at the navy and voila --no more lazer threat.

  • Wouldn't it have been easier to burn the rubber instead???

Sink the bastard pirates ones and for all....
