One thing I love about the Who was that each of their albums has a tone that is significantly different from the others. It was as though their sound was constantly evolving. Some people didn't like this album but I think it was one of their best. It seemed like much more of an initmate effort in contrast to the epic themes in Quadrophena. It was different, but that's why I love it.
@Dunwyche Hi. I guess everyone has different preferences. Denny Doherty of the Mamas and the Papas said once, that his favorite was "Dancing Bear" out of all the dozens of great hits the Mamas had. Dancing Bear is not known at all hardly. Have a nice weekend!
Just reminds me of how much I miss John Entwistle and Keith Moon...... Thank God we still have Pete and Roger! This was Roger's finest moment, vocally, if you ask me. I think this whole album was greatly underrated.
As I reach my mid forties "By Numbers" has become my favorite Who album. The beauty of Townshend's writing is that it aged with him as it ages with me now. My Generation gets you through your teens, Quadrophenia brings you into your adult life, and By Numbers carries you into middle age. The man is the greatest writer rock will ever know.
@tabbygail7 I couldn't agree more . I've been a who fan for a number of years but i've never broke there music down in such basic terms - generation for kids - quad for moody adults & numbers for old gits !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@tabbygail7 Man, I'm only 24 and after a love affair with Quad I'm now clinging to Numbers. I feel old. Also, there was an 8 year gap between My Generation and Quad, but then only two years from Quad to Numbers. Just goes to show how badly Pete started to age (emotionally) in the 70s.
i think constantly practicing pete's crash chord style got me really good at that stuff, but what i can't nail are those little solo bursts that he does between them, it just takes really fast thinking that i cant beging to understand. pete was the best, IMO
The Who By Numbers was, at the time, considered a bad follow up to Odds And Sods, which was considered at the time to be a bad follow up to Quadrophenia. However, Odds And Sods and The Who By Numbers are held very dear to Who fans, almost as equally as the great bootlegs of that time.
j 'adore la partie de basse, the bass title of entwistle!! tres grand morceau des who , meme si tout le monde les casse a cette époque!! the who for ever!! i love you again!!! merci! arnaud! from france::!!
I don't know why I keep saying it, said it so many times before... Butthis is just another display of Pete's genius. To be able to write so true and accurate songs, and balance it with the beat and rock that's needed to keep you listening. Perhaps one of the best performances the band ever had.
the who died with entwhistle in 2002 should have canceled that tour although i had to see them anyway....zack starkey was such a good fill in for moon... then the ox had to go and do naughty things.....rock is dead they say long live rock
Entwhistle and Jack Bruce from Cream were the best bassists in the world,IMO.I'll give Andy Fraser from Free a tie for second with Jack Bruce and Geddy Lee from Rush and Chris Squire from Yes third place
i have studied entwistle for years, his style his equitment , even his family history, just about everything. He is the best! I also play bass and i could play and practice for decades straight and not get as good as him and if you didnt get anything out of this he is fast and good and there is not one man on this earth better R.I.P john
One of the best songs ever, and woefully overlooked. Music, lyrics, pure brilliance. Just the pairing of "cemented down" with "demented clown" should be enough to give it a place at the banquet.
@Exilemainstreet I agree with you about Roger and a few of my favourite songs are on By Numbers but, The Who were critical of this album themselves so, I wouldn't say the public was stupid.
My Generation,Sell Out,Quadrophenia,Odds and Sods...and By Numbers are my favorites, By Numbers holds a special place in me though, more than the others
I think Entwistle standing still made their live performances better by sitting still. It was kinda like some of the Who's songs, a contrast, from soft such as Pete's Lyrics in Bargain, to the roaring drive of Roger. He's a foil.
In an interview he answered a question regarding why he was so stoic while playing. His response was that early on he had tried moving around and being more animated, but that this caused his playing to be sloppy.
Sorry, I can't cite the reference, but remembered it after listening to this awesome song.
Yeah all music now is about sex drugs, and really some people have no respect for each other so you gotta fit in so u dont get made fun of im 14 and it really sucks sometimes not just for me but for others
"give'n'take 5 o'clock in the mornin feelin"--lol, I'd say he's talking about masturbation. just more cutting edge Pete. fyi--this song is blacklisted on most radio stations because of that. Can you believe it with all the other crap that gets thru? One of the Who's many Classics!
I also think it's about a midlife crisis-like period where he's got a lot of emotions and they're causing him to do weird stuff. Not just sex, if at all.
One of the best songs Townshend ever wrote. Amazing.
