I have never used the A200 im afraid. From what i have seen the sonys have some really nice features on theyre lower end DSLR's like stabilisation and live view. But i think by going with the d40 you will have better high ISO performance. Higher megapixel is only important if you plan on printing large. Also Nikon has much more of a community online which has helped me loads and a big range of lenses which you will still be able to use when you upgrade your SLR
My price range is very limited to either the Nikon D40 or even the Sony Alpha 200K which one is better! the one downside to the D40 is that it only has 6.1 MP:*( My compact Canon SD 1000 has more mega pixels than it and the D40 is a SLR! Wierd! But plz can u help me out which is better?
The camera is very user friendly! There is a sports mode which higers the iso and allows for faster shutter speeds to freeze action but i would say sports pics depend on which lens you have, a fast telephoto would be ideal to freeze action from far away and isolate the player with a nice DOF! but they are expensive!

mega pixels only matters if your blowing up the picture, and the D40 is an great camera for the price. You would be happy with the D40
