This is young George, not too passionate , but very skillful, have not heard anyone play this good rendition on erhu. Our class was in one of his US clinic in Alabama few years back, he is very passionate about teaching the children, he is a great educator.
@YKC005 Almost none of the Chinese instruments were indigenous to the Chinese civilization. Erhu came from central asia. Pipa is brought from Persia, dulcimer is also persian. the shakuhachi type flutes that the japanese copied were supposedly from the Hmong minority. Pretty much only the zither type intruments, the dizi, and the vertical end-blown flute, and the taiko-type (introduced to japan from china) drums were invented by Chinese.
I saw him play the Galloping Horses in Bowfire show in Reno last weekend.... believe me he is NOT robotic! Full of passion, humor, skill.... truely amazinK my dears!
is there any full version of Carmen fantasy played by George Gao on youtube?really wanna listen to the full one especially the first part which is my favourite part of all but couldnt find it!
Wow, Ferdia! What set this off? I have re-read my inflammatory(???) posting but failed to locate the fuse. What would you have written if I hadn't liked Mr. Gao?
BTW, your invective would be more devastating if more of it were spelled correctly. Get your friends (if you haven't alienated them all) to help you. And after vomiting up this vitriol from God knows where, why offer up the apologies? But they are accepted; after all, you may have had a hellova day!
Allow me to apologise for my previous harsh and uneccisary comments. I was briefly possesed by the Taliban and lost control of my motor nerves. Hence the brash comment. Your description of Mr.Gao was both informative and descriptive and above all, relevant and neccisary to this video. I'm so glad that an obviously cultured music Connoisseur such as yourself sir, was able to provide me and the wider youtube community with a description of Mr.Gao's character.
A couple of years ago I saw a George Gao concert in a small theatre just north of Toronto. Besides being an obvious virtuoso on the erhu, George is a delightful and unassuming man ... and a first-class entertainer.
well, actually, it was invented not only hundreds of years before the piano, nut also a couple hundred years before the Europeans knew good music, if any.
Well to be fair, the Greeks and Romans have always had a different culture than the germanics and norse in the north, as well as a different racial composition. The romans had to force civilisation on them. And for some reason nowadays you will see the fair haired north europeans thinking they are superior south europeans.
However, vln's comment, I wont call ignorant, but very incindiary and provocative. Tactless. Instead of comparing the two wonderful cultures we should appreciate both.
@vlnmusic that is a false statement. Europe has thousands of years of musical history as well. Did you think that the monks just invited music for Europe? Cause European culture Stretches back thousands of years.
I have this DVD! Woot!
