  • I think the songs about DMT (a type of drug). Look it up and you'll see what I mean.

  • Maynard is a genius.

  • Wen i firs herd this song live tears of joy coverd my face

  • 7:17 every damn time.

  • @elrath for real, I think that's what you hear on the verge of the event horizon, before being sucked into infinity, lol

  • Tool lights a fire under my lazy ass.

  • 23 douchebags...and counting

  • My 14 year old son is teaching himself to play this on his bullet strat... sounds good so far. I'm a proud dad, he loves my music.

  • @TheUnNerved Good dad

  • I rode the spiral must do it again

  • Im pretty sure that that picture is the mayan calendar. Pretty sketchy. :- /

  • Does anyone know what that pictures is at 7:17?? Please respond

  • I am stoned and like new Tool better than old Tool, except from Opiate. Does that make me a bad person?

  • @belacy87 I love both new and old Tool. But they have evolved a lot since their Opiate/Undertow days. From my personal analysis, it seems like theyve evolved from playing angry and perhaps frustrated yet talented music to more of a psychedelic "art rock" type feel with about 10x the talent. These four guys must all be on the same wave-length or mind frequency to be able to make such amazingly beautiful, yet impossibly intricate music. Ive been listening for years and my mind is blown every time.

  • the lyrics aren't gonna mean anything spiritual if you aren't in touch with those aspect of possible experience. you draw the meaning from your own depth. be proud if you can see the alchemical spirit in this music, it's a gift from who knows where. Spiritual pride is just another step towards emerging out of our infancy. Nonetheless, it seems to be a step for many of us. Don't be ashamed, just keep it from becoming a habitual pathology of ignorance. Keep on keeping on.

  • @alliant well said brother

  • Anyone else think of Castaneda when you hear this?

  • Black and white = stereotyping words Yellow and red = are also stereotyping people, Chinese and communists (originally from Russia, as in the Red Army, but the term has blurred to encompass anyone who has even the slightest communist leaning) respectively. Yellow and Red appeared during the cold war. Over thinking and over analyzing separates the body from the mind. "Dont think, just feel" Justifying the stereotyping and hatred.

It goes on, Hell, you could write an essay on ONE of Tool's songs.

  • @pseudoboss11

You are listening to the words at face value. Both the was he sings the words and the drum beat are both Alchemy.

The song is just about thinking outside yourself. It is about exploring the outer reaches of the mind.

Hear the whole thing. It is not possible for you to be racist in your infancy, is it?

Hell the song's NAME means thinking outside conventional thought. Tool is all about people opening their minds and such.

  • @pseudoboss11 i could be completely wrong here but what i thought he meant as in black and white in his infancy was meant that all you can see as a newborn is black and white then you gradually adapt to colours for example red and yellow and lets you see. your opinion of it is a good one though too and probably right.

  • @613Andyman The song is about how people keep "overthinking, overanalyzing" Tool's songs, instead of sitting back and enjoying them for what they are.

  • spiraling out-step 9

    step 10-godhead

  • People...he's not god....and actually.... he can kind of be a stuck up dick too. He's a talented singer, in front of F'n amazing musicians, but seriously folks, it's not like it's The Madhyamakavatara or anything.....

  • I like how we all conjure up meanings for the lyrics that Maynard wrote. However he is the only one who truly knows the meanings of each lyric he places in a song !!

  • Great song!

  • i fell in love

  • *watch it bend*, meaning watch the fabric of reality become molded into a new shape by your mind*...

  • Can any one tell me what mean " push the envelope, watch it blend"...???

  • @alebazzan

the first guy overcomplicated that, i'm afraid, "push the envelope", the expression meaning to push the limits- watch it bend. So, push the limits of, observe what happens.

  • @alebazzan "push the envelope" is an expression. it means to test the limits, to try and go further than before. and it's "watch it BEND"

  • yay psychadelics =^_^=

  • I wish I can witness the birth of a song like this from the lyrics to the music

  • this was awesome live

  • 7:15 what its that ? please answer me i m a hot chick ;)

  • I love how any Tool song can be interperated by one person to mean one thing, then mean somthing compleatly diffrent to another. Tool is powerfull.

  • 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 8 5 3 2 1 1=perfection

  • @x53k5hun8x (1) Black, (1) then, (2) white are, (3) all I see, (5) in my in·fan·cy, (8) red and yel·low then came to be, (5) rea·ching out to me, (3) lets me see. (2) There is, (1) so, (1) much, (2) more and (3) beck·ons me, (5) to look through to these, (8) in·fi·nite pos·si·bil·i·ties. • <3 <3 <3 Tool.

  • Transcend

  • Its like hes reading my thoughts.

  • One of the best creations I have ever listened :)

  • Not really that good.

  • @FlashGameDev Why? Please enlighten us as to the reasons this particular piece of music is "Not really that good" You have every right in the world to not like it but you can't say it's not good.

  • EMBRACE LIFE AND EMBRACE TOOL :)

  • I think "Red and white are what I see" means what we see now, not nessesarally what it actually is. "Red and Yellow then came to be, lets me see" Gives us more but not even close to all of an understanding on what life, death, and basically everything is.

    Well, thats what I think

  • @42threspwan I can pretty much guarantee your right, because lines like that definately use symbolism. When you look at the song as a whole the symbolism is very apparent. Of course in the end, it's up to each person how they interpret the songs once they "try and read between the lines".

  • @TheDrunkwraith I couldn't agree more. I think it is important and fun to try to interperate lyrics. It gives you an idea of what the song really means, but I think some people take it too far. Some people only pay attention to the lyrical part of the song. That is only part. Without instruments, music isn't music. Music is art, if you take everything but the lyrics, and throw it out, it would be like painting with one color. Incomplete.

  • @42threspwan Yeah very true. I never even got into tool until after I listened to aenima a few times through and got a feel for what each member was doing. At the point it sounded absolutely amazing, and I finally understood why everyone considers Danny to be one of the greatest drummers out there. When you look at how simple a song like Stinkfist is, and you listen to how everyone's doing their own thing regardless, it's unbelievable. Very rare for each member to be completely independent.

  • @42threspwan Black, white, red and gold are something related to the colours that appears while creating a philosophal stone. ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @HBProds also Maynard James Keenan commented on the lyric mentioning black, white, red and yellow: "I use the archetype stories of North American aboriginals and the themes or colours which appear over and over again in the oral stories handed down through generations. Black, white, red, and yellow play very heavily in aboriginal stories of creation."

  • @HBProds An interesting side note, in alchemy "The Great Work" begins with the Nigredo (black), then moves to the Albedo (white), then the Citrinitas (yellow), then the Rubedo (Red).

  • @96lazar Yup ! Differents meanings for one thing. That makes Tool awesome !

  • It's about taking a fat shit and watching it "spiral" down the toilet...

  • @SuttonSantiniPaulo you would fuck with lyrics that are too complex for you to understand

  • @SuttonSantiniPaulo

    lol troll

  • I just came to hear music....so.......you guys have fun with your theories or whatever....

  • I thought it was about tacos?

  • in my opinion this songs lyrics are fairly simple.. dont just live your life according to what you see right in front of your face. keep your mind open and embrace your feelings and intuitions. there is so much spiriutal out there. feel it man

  • Okay so I just wanna say this song is fucking genius and figuring this thing out was a BITCH! But,they used something called the Fibonacci sequence and what I know is the song relates in face this entire album comes back to the theme of spirals.Maynard is saying. "Don't live life in a linear way. Live in the spiral. Grow, expand, reach for the unknown"

    .

  • I don't know whether to be happy or disgusted that many do not get Maynards words.......

  • @FreedmFightr be neither. it makes no difference....all it takes is for his understanding of self to radiate, with or without words.

  • @FreedmFightr i feel the same

  • @FreedmFightr be happy that YOU get it... be sad for the rest !!!

  • @FreedmFightr Words can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways, there is no right or wrong. Clearly YOU don't get it.

  • @FreedmFightr Neither. The ignorance or understanding of others is not something you should really be worried about unless you are trying to teach something.

  • @FreedmFightr I do think you shouldn't give a fuck about it.

  • the first lines about color could be about evolution since black and white vision came first than color vision

  • @wearestarstuffsagan

i think hes talking in a spiritual context. "black then white are, all i see in my infancy" pretty much means (to me) that you see that things as black and white, cut and dry, etc. then when he says "red and yellow then became to be, lets me see" is when he develops spiritually and that he realizes that we are all connected and that there is an explanation for everything. the colors are everything inbetween white and black, and that he understands everything insightfully.

  • The bass solo for 4:50 is soo epic. xD

  • It's a song about writing music, and the "infinite possibilites" when doing so. When he first started (in my infancy) all he saw was black music notes on white paper, then he learned that there was so much more to the creativity of music than just the notes written on the page (red and yellow then came to me)... Tool is the apitimy of pushing the envelope... Maynard is the sickest musician alive.

  • @Naternutts It's not just about music, it's about your mind never being stuck in a circle, always spiraling out.

  • "with my feet upon the ground i lose myself between the sounds

then open wide to suck it in, i feel it move across my skin,

im reaching up and reaching out, im reaching for the random, or

whatever will bewilder me, whatever will bewilder me.

and following our will and wind we may just go where no ones been,

we'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no ones been.

spiral out, keep going.spiral out keep going."

    AMAZING

  • if TOOL formed a cult, i would join it

  • ok seriously? i was trying to be funny but ffs, it's such a stupid thing to say. yes artists in general are known to have an affiliation with drugs but i wasn't being serious. why would people thumbs up something so stupid? is our society really so comedicly oriented that youths can't appreciat anything intellegent? honestly some people have said some very intellegent things, but the comment about drugs gets liked more. wtf?

  • @foopstab You answered your own question, people are stupid. It really is that simple... Sadly.

  • @foopstab lol. Ur passion is nagging at u. either be good, or start embracing the feelings its provoking. thats the only way to make those painful feelings subside. Humanity is stupid as a whole, but, what is humanity? its just a bunch of souls (sic) trying to work out the truth(sic) So u could possibly understand how everyone is at varied levels/places(.... its not their fault, (sort of), but its certainly not helpful or healthy for you to negatively judge their position mentally unfortunately.

  • Funny how the two top comments are about the depth of the song and the intelligence needed to understanding them. Don't you listen? "Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind."

  • Playin that song on guitar is the shit.

  • awsome..all i can say is praise God:)

  • this song better be plaid during the credits of the 2013 movie "The Giver." no other song would fit. this is my favorite song of all time and after reading the book The Giver, it somehow made me love this song EVEN MORE. which i didnt know was possible

  • I work out to this song and pretty much ev=ry Tool song

  • The amount of syllables per line in Lateralus correspond to an arrangement of the Fibonacci number sequence in which each number is the sum of the previous two. Pretty amazing how much Keenan put's into his music. Love all his stuff.

  • @XShadowAssassin17X what's even more amazing is how he actually writes his lyrics. He says that instead of writing words to fit the music, he writes the words to describe the music.

  • @XShadowAssassin17X it also reflects on the actually content of the lyrics *swing on the spiral*

  • I can interpret this song however i like, the lines can be quite ambiguous and hold meaning for us all. To me, I interpret this as representing the mysteries in life i have yet to explore.

I interpret this songs meaning to me through not just lyrics but the music as a whole and his beautiful melody over the music

  • I was reading a little of the flame-war that's going on in these responses... boredom. But I can hardly believe the kind of shit people are saying. If you can't understand what Tool is talking about, it's time for you to Evolve. Seriously. And to those who meditate to this "shit" - Good. They're called Tool for a good reason. Just like "The Doors" were called that because of Blake's poem where he talks about opening "the doors of perception", so Tool for us to grow psychically.

  • I'd love to know what images you used in making this video. Really fuckin' cool. There was one that looked like some kind of diagram. Even on full screen I couldn't see any of the writing. can you email it to me or post the full image so I can read it? I'd really appreciate it... Grazi.

  • Finals today and tomorrow, this is my theme song right here^

  • @TheMetallicDk fucking same here

  • yes I maditate to this u call shit

  • There are retards that meditate to this shit. It says nothing! It means nothing! It's shit I used to come up with while doing hits of acid.

  • @Gnawonit If you knew anything about this band, you'd know just how wrong you are. All their songs have a huge meaning behind them. You seem to be a good example of why drugs are bad. >.> 46&2 are all I have left to say..

  • I like the quote on the description, just makes you think about the song even more

  • The fibbinochi sequence is in the song or however you spell it haha 13,8,5,3 then 3,5,8,13 so its 1+2=3, 2+3=5,3+5=8,5+8=13..the beginning sillibols. listen to it.

  • @sadskatecrew Syllables* and actually, it starts at 1. It goes 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,8,5,3,2,1,1. Example: 2:57-3:23

  • this is either really, really deep or something someone wrote while high

  • @foopstab why cant it be both?

  • @foopstab its both ;)

  • @foopstab or both

  • @foopstab Possibly both! :)

  • @foopstab its both.

  • @foopstab unfortunately its really really really deep. and if u knew wats its about i think it might scare you so i wont tell you. you wouldnt believe me anyway.

  • @foopstab can't be both?

  • @foopstab Really deep, Maynard James Keenan is a freaking genius.

  • @foopstab read about the third eye, universal manifestation. pantheism, beyond physical realization

  • @foopstab can't it be both? :P

  • @foopstab neither

  • @foopstab or both no?

  • @foopstab its by maynard therefore it is really deep. the meaning is right there in the lyrics, it's about expanding your mind and constantly evolving to grow intellectually. Or its about black and white red and yellow lol it's about crayons lol

  • @foopstab Hey I think we're being a little narrow minded about this. It could easily be both!

  • @foopstab or both

  • Fuck all u guys and enjoy this jam

  • toooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • It's about the human creative process and its conflict with our other deep rooted natural tendancies, concluding that the only way to reconcile the two is to let go of our attempts to control either, and just let them spiral out together as nature intended. There's nothing mystical or any of that shit. Most of his lyrics are about human nature, and pretty straight foreward though sometimes presented in an obscure way.

  • dude wtf youve had too much flouridated water man. very simply put if you use logic and mathematically calculated ideologies etc. than you are inhibiting the nature of your being you are using your useless brain than was designed for fighting wolfs and finding acorns, for something that is wasnt used for. if you really want to know who you are abandon your brain and flow with nature(instinct)

  • @THErickuss

that makes no sense whatsoever. how can you know who you are if you dont use your brain? youre a fucking retard. the nature of your being is your consciousness, which means your understanding of self, and awareness of things around you. how the fuck can you write anything youve just wrote without using your brain? honestly, it sounds like your a misguided transcendentalist.

  • @tbone81395 congradulations dumbshit you failed to learn something, to learn how dumb you are is a virtue

  • @tbone81395 ive been were no one has been, have you? you better pray that you never do as long as your in this body. you need to disregard every thing you think you know, you know nothing until you know everything.

  • @THErickuss lets fuck the waitress

  • @THErickuss

ok im done talking to you. whatever you want to believe dude. there are millions of possibilities, so you are just as right as i am. this argument is pointless. enoy life, love, and peace.

  • i want to feel the "love" of god that comes with religion, but im having trouble with abandoning reason. - what i got from it :P

  • @oftenlostinwhat

you can still find love in god without religion.. why wouldnt you be? just because religion focuses on god it shouldnt mean that you need to get rid of reasoning and logic. there is a reason, just a very convoluted one. very convoluted. infact at the same time its not (paradoxical). perception is reality. if you think gods real god is. if gods not, then gods not. i believe that we exist in a vast beautiful multi dimensional realm of infinite everything.

  • this song describes my first acid trip

  • My question is now that ive understood that philosophers (?) is citated in the lyrics. Got any names? And is it some kind of tolking of the human "self-awareness" of excistence in mind..? Just wondering not trying to be smart. And whats with they eye thing, cant find any religious about the third eye. Enlight me please.

  • 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 <<<the chorus follows the Fibonacci Sequence

  • I believe this song is about all our vibrations being interconnected by all creatures in the world. That with that power nothing would be impossible. Our minds and spirits are conncected physically. We have the power to change many things, yet we dont. Solutions are simple acations are harder. Lets take of our people down here from starvation before we send a 27 BILLION DOLLAR SHUTTLE TO MARS. Anyone get what im saying, if you dont eat some p.cubensis and listen to LATERALUS(cd)

  • I believe the lyrics are about the creative process in general, our attempts to overcome our natural inability to think outside the box, as well as the downside to attempting to force the process by "over thinking, and over analizing". Also, the conclusion that sometimes you just have no control over such things, and the resulting release of the vain attempts to overcome human nature and just going with our own "will and wind" to see if it may just take us where no ones been.

  • both of you get the fuck out of here your both dipshits who masturbate to pics of your moms your obviously not intelligent enough to be commenting on a tool vid

  • @kimnjer1 Why dont you suck their dicks then FAGGOT. I hate people like you that think that someone shouldnt listen to music. You think Tool just pulled this shit out of their ass dipshit? They were influenced by bands like Zeppelin and King Crimson. MJKs lyrics arent that orginal he takes thing from authors such as Huxley,Descartes,Pluto, and other people who you havent even heard of much less read, but then agian your ignorant so i shouldnt be that crude. You fucking bitch

  • This song is mind blowing.... a Fav.

  • why is it that everyone is feeding the troll? so the fact that he talks like a crackhead and ends all his messages with "fem boy :P :P :P" and actually knows how to operate, or even own, a computer doesn't set off any alarms? leave him be. don't talk to him, he'll OD on meth or something.

  • @klaynexas3 well it's kind of fun making fun of him...I know it's not nice to laugh at people with mental disabilities but I can't help myself lol

  • @Psilocybong420 lol dude!!!!! u ain't dissin me at all haha!!!!!!! u think ur dissinz be real manly haha????? HELLLL NAWWWW haha!!!! u be usin 2 many big ass wordz 2 be dissin a real og balla, badass, dumbass guido like me haha!!!!!!! lol if i met u i'd whoop u up so bad u'd be havin black eyez n busted armz hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! femmmmmmmmmmmm bopyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! :P :P :P

  • @klaynexas3 lol dude!!!!!!! now u be denyin that i be the real deal 2 hahahahhahahahahah!!!!!! how many of u fuckin fem boyz can't handle the truth that i be real haha????? femmmmmm boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

  • so i come to the conclusion..it takes a lot of intelligence to understand tools musical expressions...m tryingggg...arrgghhhhh

  • @mulholland1985 Not neccesarily. You just need a creative mind that knows how to think for itself. That's what Tool wants you to do with their music.

  • @mulholland1985 you fool, the whole meaning of the song is that "over thinking over analizing separates the body from the mind" means that logic and all that intelligence crap are there to slap limits on your mind. throw science out of the equation throw everything you consider knowledge out of your mind only then will life start to work properly. thats not all there is to it, read the seth books

  • @THErickuss so u are a tool fan eh???pretty sad..the way u address me tells it all..gud day..:)...and ya obviously everybody understands that part..but there is more to this song..

  • @THErickuss

lol well... you can percieve the music however you like, but, that makes no sense. how could logic inhibit and/or limitate your mind? i think you might of misinterpreted what i think they were trying to imply. "over thinking over analyzing, separates the body from the mind" means that overthinking and over analyzing is something your mind does, whereas, your body doesnt, it just does. see what i mean?

  • @mulholland1985 well if you want to try, you're lucky, cause trying is under you're control. if you try, and you dont get it, you can just try more!!!

  • I love this! Thanks for sharing!

  • fuck obama, fuck the GOP.maynard for president 2012.The man is a fucking genius.

  • "Black then white" are the "shades" of the spiritual selves, i.e. the physical selves. The "red and yellow" are the colors of the spiritual selves. "As below so above" is a hermetic expression, it means that the physical self below is the same as the spiritual self above.

I think the Fibonacci sequence symbolizes the perfect expansion of the spiral. It's increasing at a perfectly increasing ratio: the golden ratio.

  • I've searched online and couldn't find a really good explanation, so here's mine: the song is about reaching the spiritual divine self (kind of like Plato's Allegory of the Cave). Similar to Plato's cave, the philosopher who over-thinks and over-analyzes is separated from his body to reach the spiritual self. The spiritual self and the body are on the same line, since the spiral is a single line. This is an unending line.

  • @LeadGuardian Try not popping oxy and listening to tool.

  • i didn´t know for a while that god has a band called tool :D

  • i think its really cool musically how psychedelic tool can be.

  • its tool the song has no meaning but means everything at the same time so shut up and enjoy the music

  • @Theunholyone2193 It has a lot of meaning.

  • @Theunholyone2193 it means differnet things to many poeple but at the same time it says over thinking is not right go with what you feel and keep moveing forward that is the meaning of life ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,to live
