i'f i'm not misstacken, the clip on the select is reversible. also when i opened the box of my knife it had rust on one of the swers but i have seem to have fix it. great vid by the way.
maybe they do not centre the blades on purpose because most people are right handed and will be pushing down on the same side repeatedly when opening the knife? dont know if thats a factor in the wear of the opening mecanism.
Great review! Very informative! When I took my vantage select turkey hunting, it drizzled a bit and there are tiny rust spots all over the blade from the rain. Any tips on how to clean them off? My dad probably knows how, but anything would help! Thanks!
i love everything about my vantage select paperstone EXCEPT the in handle retention. one hard stroke and the blade is out, almost all the way...paid like $28 + shipping and the steel holds up...wasn't excited about 420hc tho, but it's decent and in comparison to another affordable blade steel, 8cr13mov i think it's really adequate.
Wait a second screw G-10 it smells like the computer i built and every time i Grind it the shit smells like the dang thing is smoking. I like canvas micarta and so do you come on you know you like it. Small knife paper micarta is sweet ..... sweeeeeeet! Made my brother a bear somethingorother with a canvas micarta omg saved the day in my one week camp out. Made bbq taters bacon and onions... yeah it was sick.... you know it. Jimp this pardon my french earlier. Next purchase big maybe 1095.
Cut my forearm with my small pro. Oh well i mean bonded with it dude!! Bonded with that one for sure! Was reaching for something as it was on my lansky. Hookin it up with a fierce 19ish degree bro! These are not expensive for s30v come on now. Both my big and small are dead center and the larger pro deploys faster due to weight i believe. Have a chill day. Peace out!
Received pro today, good knife but I did have a blade shipped rubbing the liner. I tightened the pivot screw and was able to center the blade with ever so slight drag in deployment, so that's acceptable to me. The liner appears fairly thin and engages at about 70% out of the box...little concerning. However over all the knife is great, if the liner lock becomes an issue, I hope and expect that buck will make it right. At the price point its an awesome knife.
Went to check it out over the weekend. The Buck, for me, lacked the "second kind of cool aspect". Even though the Buck had better steel I had to get the SOGZilla instead
I feel silly now. I was watching the beginning of this and was thinking "my Vantage doesn't look like that, what gives?" Then I notice the Benchmade logo just as he says it
I did notice on my Buck Vantage Pro that the milled in lines on the side where the Buck logo is are not as deep as on the other side and the lines on the other side are also going all the way to the edges of the handels.
Is this like that on all of them?
I show the issue in my upcomming review, im glad for your answers.
I have actually batoned wood with the vantage select and it did great. The lock did not fail and still had a solid lockup. It is the strongest liner lock I know of!
Buck just released a second version of this knife called the Vantage force. it is the same other than an added thumb ramp with Gimping and a black half serrated blade.
@jrobertsrhs I have the bantam, (right next to me actually) it's ok, in my opinion, the biggest con of it is that the handle is all plastic, and has no reinforcement. another point is that it's kind of hard to open, but it does take one hell of an edge! and it holds it well, too. I'm thinking of getting the vantage. it seems to be an overall better knife, but im not too sure on it yet.
@jrobertsrhs i just got my vantage. GET THE VANTAGE! its a lot nicer than the buck, not to mention built more durable. the bantam will have a sharper edge out of the box, but the vantage will hold it a lot longer.
hey nutn, you should do a "30 dollar edc knife shootout" type of vid, and have like the buck vantage small vs spyderco persistence vs kershaw skyline etc. I think that would be a pretty sweet video, to see what your absolute favorite 30 dollar edc blade is. thumbs up so he'll see it!!!!!!!!!
Hey nutn (and Veri, gotta give credit where credit is due) thank you so much for TNP, today I bought a 1760 skyline from Walmart and scored a buck vantage pro s30v model off ebay for 47 dollars, thank you so much for your recommendations!
At Walmart I bought what I thought was the vantage avis but when I looked closer to the package I saw that it was just the select with dymondwood handles and yet it was the same price as the regular avid!!!
Nice knife, nice review...have owned a Vantage Select for over 12 months now in EDC use. One issue that people might want to know is that this model has plastic washers between the blade & liners. To keep the action fast & free you really need to pull it down after a few months and clean it up and re-lube it. Phosphor bronze would of been nicer - does anyone here who owns the Avid or Pro know if the washers are metallised?
I bought a Vantage Pro for $59.34 at Amazon, plus shipping, and all the problems listed in the video appear to have been corrected. It's got good clearance between the blade and liner, opens easily, locks solidly, and it's sharp enough to shave with out of the box.
@tmutant I bought a pro about 3 months ago and it was totally off center. I sent it in for another and it had the same problem. Also, the thumb hole is too small and the flipper is too short. Looks great but poorly designed.
I picked up a Select model at a local Gander Mtn. here for around $30 (Gander Mtn. is always a little overpriced, but in this case, a few extra bucks was fine for the convenience). Anyway, and this is just my data point, but my Select model came perfectly centered and VERY sharp right out of the box. It's interested to see that all of yours have had that problem. Also, the thumb hole is a little hard to use, but the flipper makes it fine (just my data point).
I inspected both pro models today at bass pro. Figured all the flaws would have been worked out by now for a great USA company, they are not! The blade was not centered, loose and not hair sharp. The liner lock was mis ground on one of them, this CAN NOT be easily corrected, it would need the liner replaced to fix this! The dymondwood scales version looked nice, but were very slick. expect to drop this knife. BTW the kershaw skyline was perfect.
All your videos are great! I was wondering if you would do a review on the Buck 290 Rush knife? I'm a big Buck fan since they're made in the USA and have a forever warranty.
@BigmanJ29 kershaw is made in the usa as well. nothing like havin the good ol' made in AMERICA (usa) label to put the mind at peace. when it saw china on it I already have douts
went to my local walmart to purchase, and even tho they had 2 diffrent buck vantage knives on display, they had none in stock and the salesperson told me there was a recall? do you have any info on this???
Dude, Nutin'! Just saw the Buck SHOT 2011 booth review, and I realized that the thumb hole on my Buck Vantage Select is an Oxygen Bottle wrench!! Lol! That's awesome.
Just got one, Impulse buy. Actually came here afterwords to see if I made a good choice. Glad I got lucky and grabbed this beauty. I did get the econolite version made of some wierd composite though, and I felt it could have been skeletanized. If I were to skele it with a steel drill would it void the warranty?
I have the Pro, love the steel and and lay out. BUT this knife has pissed me off to no end! The clip screws always back out, the blade screw keeps backing out, and the badge fell out of the grip the first day. If it was a more solid knife I would recommend it, but I just can't.
bought the Select on a whim while on vacation a while back. LOVE that blade! it was my EDC until it got dinged up a bit. i miss using it, it was a FANTASTIC blade!
Nutn, first off let me say I love the review. However, you compare Aus8 to 420hc. Although they are both very similar when it comes to ease of sharpening , edge retention ( I think edge retention on 420hc is a bit better than Aus8) edge taking capability, BUT, I think ( my use and experience with both of these steels is extensive ) that the rust resistance of 420HC (although not incredible) greatly surpasses that of AUS8. Regards
Just an update on the centering issues. I got a Select with the Paperstone handles, box was dated 8 of 2010 and the centering was terrible. Blade was so crooked that liner lock would barely engage. I will be sending it back. Pity they can't compete with quality levels. Looks like I'll be staying with Kershaw when I want a quality American blade at a good price.
Just an update on the liner spacing issue. I got a Select today with the blue handle . I thought I'd be safe ordering it through Amazon due to their high turnover. It came with the box dated 8/23/10. Fit on the blade is terrible with it wedged against the side when closed and lots of side to side play when open. The liner lock barely contacts well enough to work. Looks like Kershaw has nothing to worry about here.
Wow, Buck finally discovered another steel besides 420 and 440a. And it's S30V, one of the best steels you can get for general production knives. It's like going straight from driving a Ford Pinto to driving a Mercedes S-class.
just bought an avid today and wow this things sharp, took me a little while to get used to the flipper but im liking it now, looks great too, the little blue badge thing, looks like a car or something :P
I don't understand why they don't make a small version of each model. I have the small Vantage and it's a perfect EDC blade and I'd just love to have a small Vantage Pro knife....
I added some jimping along the liner lock and the top of the handle with a fine diamond file, the grip is now much improved. I wish Buck would start doing this at the factory.
i got the avid model about 3 and a half months ago and i haven't had to really sharpen it since its so sick im so addicted to buck knives and knives in general!
been meaning to post @ this video. watched nutn's review of the vantage series, and went out and bought the small version of the vantage select for $20. absolutely one of, if not the best knife purchase ive ever made!!! ( went back and bought the full size, and another small!) it is superbly well made. I have bought the higher end knives by kershaw/spyderco/crkt and this is as good for a 3rd the price so im not worried about beating the crap out of them!! thanks so much to nutn for the tip!
My blade is centered very well, but the blade is not shaped right. It's not rounded like the cheaper one. It's very sharp but... You will see blade shape differences from blade to blade.
Question: My vantage small has a real funky grind lines. Almost like they grinded twice in two slightly different angles. Looks horrible. Any one else see this? I am wondering if buck would fix/replace this blade. It's only only thing preventing me from loving it.
I got the avid today, an the diamondwood is great in looks. it feels very strong. but we'll see about that. I'm from the netherlands, and the price of the avid here is 50 euro's thats about 70 dollars. but it's a great knife! thank's nutnfancy!
@vcadsand i've got it too, bought in france at 52 euro. you can get it for $30 in the US !
i promised me to never buy knives in france again, i'll go to yourcornerstore where you can get the tenacious and the flash 2 for the french price of the vantage pro ( even with 25euro of shipping )

Diamondwood isn't a Buck trademark for G10. Diamondwood is an engineered wood product, a resin impregnated laminate. It is a product of, and hence trademark of . . . wait for it, wait for it - Diamondwood International.
It's used for many things, such as guitar fingerboards, flute bodies, furniture, marine cabinetry, etc. It's nice stuff, and real wood.
got knife back from cutlery shoppe and no issues seem to be present. cutlery shoppe has awesome customer service! thanks Jeff too. vantage pro is awesome knife (so far at least). will have first true test when i go hiking. definately recommend this knife.
I just bought one and love it already, came super sharp. Only thing is, im not a fan of the grip. When i first looked at it i thought it was more of a rubber or at least more grippy. I would have been awesome for them to use the same stuff they had on the Buck Alpha Hunter folder.
also, could be factor to my issues with pro, is everyone's locking liner end slanted and not straight? and where the liner touches blade steel base is slanted opposite way. liner top slants up at right and blade steel bas slants down to right.
anyone's vantage pro only lock up (locking liner engages) unless you open it fast/quickly? if i open my pro slowly the locking liner does not engage. also, when i close it it catches on a little nub (locate ad top of locking liner inner steel plate). is this how everyone's is? catches near open position ( knife makes about160 degree angle)
@Peace454P I'm not a fan of S30V for outdoor knives. There was too much hype that went into marketing that steel. Might be okay for culinary knives, but for outdoor use I find that it's edges chip on stuff where other blade steels don't. Like hardwood for example. I love Buck knives in general. I bought a Vantage Select in large size last summer and think it's a great knife!! Mine doesn't have any of the blade centering issues or edge/spacer contact.
Dude, you got me excited about this, too. I think I might just get it. My $5 folder from Frost Cutlery has served me adequately, but I want to upgrade to a decent folder for once in my life. For around $20, the price is right. But uh, I think I'll hold off for a little bit unless it's even lower. I need to check your more recent reviews for anything else at that price point that excites me.
Just picked up a Vantage Pro in S30V. Had slight centering issue, but deploy was a little loose. Tightened the pivot to adjust the deploy and the blade centered up in channel. No further issues. Thanks for the review.
Hey everyone, Academy in Houston, Tx had the Buck Vantage 340(aka. smaller version Select) on clearance for $9.88 today, 1/27/10. I picked up the last two at the store I was at! Also, the blades are fairly centered on these two.
Just received my small Vantage Select. Blade alignment's a little off, but not problematic. The pivot point came freakishly tight, though. It's basically a two-handed opener until I get the proper torx bit.
Just got a Select from one of the big chain sporting goods stores in my area. The blade was super sharp out of the box. Great knife, thansk for the review.
I just got my Vantage Pro. Your Corner Store has great customer service. The knife is fantastic, smooth action, feel great in hand, and it just looks great with that broad blade.
Thanks for the recommendation for both the knife and Your Corner Store.
I just got my Buck Vantage Pro. Minor blade centering issues that were able to be fixed by messing with the pivot screw. Love it!! Thank you YourCornerStore!
I ordered the Buck Vantage Pro and was very nervous about getting the knife after this video and the video responses but the knife came perfect and I am very happy with it so far.
I got a vantage pro for christmas and while it is only my second knife (after a kershaw blur) I can say it is a wonderful improvement over my already great blur. I love the s30v it is really a breath of fresh air after the 440a on the blur. My blur refused to hold an edge and it frustrated me to no end. Mine however came with the blade off centered and I wish there were a more functional thumb "stud". Thanks for the recommendation and Happy New Year!
My brother got me the Vantage Pro per request for Christmas. Beautiful knife, broad blade, light, and razor sharp. I absoutely love it. I was also surprised by its size. It was much bigger than Mr. Nutnfancy's larger hands make it seem.
Just opened my Vantage Select for christmas this morning. I love it! Used it to open all my other gifts. Thanks so much for the review Nutn, as otherwise I would not have known about this fantastic blade.
I posted a week or so ago that my Vantage Pro was having some centering issues.
My resolution was to increase the torque on the blade screw, and it did help a little. The mass of the blade helps it to deploy easily with higher torque.
The washers on the Vantage line are small for the size of knife in my opinion. I did not take one apart to see if they are Teflon or bronze, I may in the future.
RE: Belt clips. Would you trade the logo engraving on the Buck blades belt clip 17:50 for the more helpful (and thoughtful) raised thumb strips on the Sog flash? These thumb strips help the withdrawing of the blade from pocket. Blades should be about attention to 'practical' detail. Great video by the way
Vid is good the knife not so much. I have been through two of the Vantages. Blade slop seems to take all the fun out of owning the knife after a hundred flicks or so.
Well, my small Vantage Select arrived. Got it from New Graham Knives (highly recommended - actually had to email them and they were awesome). Blade is almost parallel to the liners. Lockup is good and deployment is nice and smooth. The blade is sharp enough for most tasks, but not razor sharp. Overall, money well spent.
As an added data point I gust received a Vantage Pro and it had some centering problems. It is not rubbing so am going to leave it alone for a few weeks and just use it.
I noticed the update vid that was posted on the new Vantage Pro's that Nutn received back from Buck is not up any more.
i'f i'm not misstacken, the clip on the select is reversible. also when i opened the box of my knife it had rust on one of the swers but i have seem to have fix it. great vid by the way.

If you're a Nurse, RN, NP, HCA, Paramedic, Medic, Doctor, First Aid Trainer, Law Enforcement, Fireman, etc:
The deployment hole happens to be an Oxygen Tank Wrench. It doesn't appear to have been designed that way but it works nonetheless.
Bonus (to a pretty small demographic)!
Some retailers still have a lot of older units-- So far, at Walmart and Bass Pro, they seem nominal.

Just got one, Impulse buy. Actually came here afterwords to see if I made a good choice. Glad I got lucky and grabbed this beauty. I did get the econolite version made of some wierd composite though, and I felt it could have been skeletanized. If I were to skele it with a steel drill would it void the warranty?
crimsonspade308 1 year ago
I have the Pro, love the steel and and lay out. BUT this knife has pissed me off to no end! The clip screws always back out, the blade screw keeps backing out, and the badge fell out of the grip the first day. If it was a more solid knife I would recommend it, but I just can't.

Looks like I'll be staying with Kershaw when I want a quality American blade at a good price.
tbombadil1 1 year ago

I added some jimping along the liner lock and the top of the handle with a fine diamond file, the grip is now much improved. I wish Buck would start doing this at the factory.

been meaning to post @ this video. watched nutn's review of the vantage series, and went out and bought the small version of the vantage select for $20. absolutely one of, if not the best knife purchase ive ever made!!!

I just bought one and love it already, came super sharp. Only thing is, im not a fan of the grip. When i first looked at it i thought it was more of a rubber or at least more grippy. I would have been awesome for them to use the same stuff they had on the Buck Alpha Hunter folder.
abbath1586 1 year ago
also, could be factor to my issues with pro, is everyone's locking liner end slanted and not straight? and where the liner touches blade steel base is slanted opposite way. liner top slants up at right and blade steel bas slants down to right.
justsomepeople 1 year ago
anyone's vantage pro only lock up (locking liner engages) unless you open it fast/quickly? if i open my pro slowly the locking liner does not engage. also, when i close it it catches on a little nub (locate ad top of locking liner inner steel plate). is this how everyone's is? catches near open position ( knife makes about160 degree angle)

NEWSFLASH: Buck has released another Vantage: the Blue PaperStone Vantage Select Knife 340BLS about the same price as the normal Select.
I have the normal Vantage Select and the Avid
They are both great! The Avid is more a gentleman's knife with the very nice dark wood and the polish.
the centering is OK (not rubbing) but still not perfect.

Ive herd that Bucks S30V does not hold and edge that well, is that true or did i just hear wrong.
Peace454P 1 year ago

I just received the small vantage select.
I like it well enough and is just as you described it.
My only gripe, is that the blade looks like it was ground with a bench grinder.
The grind striation marks look much more coarse than your video shows.
Not very attractive, but for 20 dollars it's pretty good.
Comparable to my Winchester Parfive in size and function, but probably uses better steel.
