well it is good for learning a simple way but it simply doesnt sound the same as james gang original, sorry i dont do video but ok good teaching video.
really good, just wanted to add a little something-- at the end of the second part (the D 9-7 A 9-7-5 E 5/7 to B5 chord) they play an E#9 (affectionately known as the hendrix chord) which is tabbed x7678x
On the intro, when he starts his bend as a whole step on the 7th fret, he keeps his pick up against the g string while ur still bending, and he uses his middle finger to pluck the string making the pluck sound while keeping his pick resting on the string. After he plucks with his middle finger, he plays the note and does this 4 times while slowly releasing the bend.
@jimosity I figured they were. Ive never seen them on a guitar just in the store. My friend had some red ones like that a few years back. I always thought they were pretty cool
This video is the best how-to on this song that I've seen on YouTube. Thanks for showing each step so clearly - you also get closer to the vibe of the song than most others. There are some subtle parts of the intro that are virtually impossible to duplicate but you get the viewer in the right spot to figure it out. Thanks for such a helpful video!
Great job brother.....believe it or not, I just kinda got turned on to the James Gang & you've got me well on my way to playin' one of their killer tunes. Thanks!
A classic riff - Very well explained and demonstrated with constant reference to fretboard position - not everyone can do this so well and thoroughly - THANK YOU!
it sounds good but to much work for what is played ok,go up the board and redo it. it is alot easier and no b.s. very simple,it doesnt matter who is right, it is simply easier, and without reaching for it,the whole thing played with in four frets,o.k.
overall to low on the board, good sound alot like walsh actually but to finger stretching for walsh,he is a slow easy player, sorry it doesnt make sense for him to play it this way ....o.k. no offense but you sound good actually, but i never learned it this way,nor have i ever seen it payed this wayed before but not bad actuallyy... o.k.
thank you this is perfect!!!! it really goes at a nice slow pace so you dont have to keep going back... you can just play with it thew whole time once and know it!!!
Please don't take this wrong, but the second part of the opening is wrong. The fingering is right, but Joe chicken picks with the right hand. You're a much better player than me, but I bought an insructional video of Joe a long time ago and he shows the opening. Go to my channel and it's right there. I posted it because a guy told me I was nuts. Being the guitar player you are, you'll see it instantly. You can also see Joe do a great version at the Crossroads show here on YT W/Steve Cropper.
@da324 Jim posted a nice video; and that Joe technique at your channel looks much easier than it is to actually play it. I'm sure Jim could play it, but maybe not teach it (?). I can't. Also, after the 'B' run, it goes to the Jimi Hendrix 'monkey cord' (x-7-6-7-8-x) before going back to the main riff
@deax12 I agree, but I think Jim can easliy play the intro. It's a tricky litle thing, but it makes all th difference. Jim's a great player and I apprectiate his work. I just thought I'd pass that info on to him, because I've yet to see anyone do it the way Joe does.
@70ORANGE Actually, while this is a great little video for those to learn with, it is not perfect. That being said, if you take what Jimosity shows in the fingerings, you can indeed get close to perfect once you listen to the record. Awesome tune to play. Now, if someone would post the bass line...
jeddcraw, if you tell people they need to learn some respect, you might be a redneck!
and if you need to watch this guy to learn how to play this lick, you need to get on MY level buddy! dont think i need life lessons from you, but you need guitar lessons from me! and calisun21, i dont know wtf world of warcraft is, and if thats a video game, thats why your generation cant play guitar, junior!
This is the tune that opened the door for me to play leads. Haven't looked back. Love the way ya take it apart for us that depend on muscle memory to get things done Damn, I'm gettin' old. Still play this all the time..
so, ive never held a guitar in my life until today. Grabbed my roommate's guitar and learned this in less than an hour. I'm not sure why someone would crap on this video like our friend boneypart, who clearly has superior knowledge...my guess is that he just lost at world of warcraft and is late for band practice because his mom hasnt come home with the car yet. Whats it like living in your parent's basement? anyways, thanks for the video, i enjoyed it.
@Calisun21 Just posted alot of bollocks, ha? There is no way one can learn this song in an hour...maybe an experienced player...just the main riff requires hours of practicing to be executed perfectly every time played...not to mention muting the strings and changing positions with your right hand.
As for the video, probably one o the best free lessons online.
kelley, the title says "how to play Funk 49. the description says "how to play Funk 49 by the James Gang". you apparently have the same level of perception as the author. and, i havent resorted to name calling because im able to express myself without lowering myself to your level. Hack!

Hey Jim, Walsh is my all time favorite...not 'cause he is the 'best" ever...no such title. I love all kinds o music. Your lesson is superb. Keep it up.
In the song, after the "wah hoo" part with the yelling and percussion, there's a guitar part that I haven't quite figured out. There is a dissonant chord and then some bent notes. Do you know how to do this part and could you comment on this? Thank you.
Great video, man. If I may assist you in an explanation, for lower level players, you want to pull that note on the 5th fret instead of push it because it's more natural to pull that note down rather than push it up. You also don't have as much bending strength in your first finger as you do in your third. Not that it can't be done but it surely isn't natural pushing that note up with that succession of notes.
awesome vid, you are missing a part on the into. I don't know the note exactly but he alternates picking when doing the 5 note bend between either e or b, He talked about the technique in a vid he did.

Cool, very helpful I'm sure! Three picky corrections:
1) At 7:00, skip the first chord you're playing. (Omit the D, start on the A7 with hammer on.)
2) At 8:15, on the second run down, don't play the A chord: just hold the bottom note and add vibrato. (Ditto for the 4th time. It alternates.)
3) At 9:06, you play an E. Try an E7b9 (x7678).
I see there's one part I've been doing wrong all these years; you have it right :-)
