  • That's a great lesson man! Real cool song. Thanks.

  • well it is good for learning a simple way but it simply doesnt sound the same as james gang original, sorry i dont do video but ok good teaching video.

  • this is the best one yet by far

  • really good, just wanted to add a little something-- at the end of the second part (the D 9-7 A 9-7-5 E 5/7 to B5 chord) they play an E#9 (affectionately known as the hendrix chord) which is tabbed x7678x

  • @jeffreypsmith that was my thought, tho...isnt't it an expurgiated 7th?(hendrix chord)

  • Awesome lesson mate, really helped

  • Cool thanks, but can U tel me what is the best effects for this song?

  • thanks man you helped me learn this song!

  • On the intro, when he starts his bend as a whole step on the 7th fret, he keeps his pick up against the g string while ur still bending, and he uses his middle finger to pluck the string making the pluck sound while keeping his pick resting on the string. After he plucks with his middle finger, he plays the note and does this 4 times while slowly releasing the bend.

  • thanks man very good, hope i can learn it. wish i had this outlet to learn when i was young

  • are those strings the special coated black ones or are they just that old?

  • @gratisboy121 Those are DR 'Black Beauty' strings.

  • @jimosity I figured they were. Ive never seen them on a guitar just in the store. My friend had some red ones like that a few years back. I always thought they were pretty cool

  • Gotta love the posts about it being wrong... sounds good 2 me, so who gives a rat's ass.

  • Thank you!

  • This video is the best how-to on this song that I've seen on YouTube. Thanks for showing each step so clearly - you also get closer to the vibe of the song than most others. There are some subtle parts of the intro that are virtually impossible to duplicate but you get the viewer in the right spot to figure it out. Thanks for such a helpful video!

  • this begining is totaly wrong

  • Thanks man! Great tutorial. Been wanting to learn this song, And your vid is the best on youtube!

  • Rock on man!! I don't play guitar, but I watched every minute of how it is done and loved it.

  • 6:16 very important, i didnt know to not hammer the g string thanks! this was nice and patient, not just some dude showing off. thanks!

  • Double post ! Damn slow internet !

  • Been playing this for about 30 years....the wrong way ! I got it in 1/2 hour here !! Thanks !! Start a school !!!

  • Been trying to play this song for about 30 years....thanks to you I'm doing it right now !! Thanks !!! Start a school !!!!!

  • Dude that was awesome! Great job, it sounds just as it should...

  • Great job brother.....believe it or not, I just kinda got turned on to the James Gang & you've got me well on my way to playin' one of their killer tunes. Thanks!

  • What effect on the amp/guitar? It'd be nice to get that sound.

  • A classic riff - Very well explained and demonstrated with constant reference to fretboard position - not everyone can do this so well and thoroughly - THANK YOU!

  • You forgot the E7#9 at the end of the pentatonic licks. Otherwise known as the Hendrix chord.

  • that was actually easy to understand, SLOW is always good

  • you had a new sub fromme just from the first min of this vid. Thanks

  • thank you

  • ok no one plays it like i do so good for you.... O.K. SOUNDS GOOD MY FRIEND

  • it sounds good but to much work for what is played ok,go up the board and redo it. it is alot easier and no b.s. very simple,it doesnt matter who is right, it is simply easier, and without reaching for it,the whole thing played with in four frets,o.k.

  • humm .... i always used fender super bulletts xl or di amario xl on everything whether lespaul or strat,it didnt matter??????????

  • overall to low on the board, good sound alot like walsh actually but to finger stretching for walsh,he is a slow easy player, sorry it doesnt make sense for him to play it this way ....o.k. no offense but you sound good actually, but i never learned it this way,nor have i ever seen it payed this wayed before but not bad actuallyy... o.k.

  • Cool, very helpful I'm sure! Three picky corrections:

    1) At 7:00, skip the first chord you're playing. (Omit the D, start on the A7 with hammer on.)

    2) At 8:15, on the second run down, don't play the A chord: just hold the bottom note and add vibrato. (Ditto for the 4th time. It alternates.)

    3) At 9:06, you play an E. Try an E7b9 (x7678).

I see there's one part I've been doing wrong all these years; you have it right :-)

  • I love dirty maple necks...

  • Thanks, you are great

  • Thank you very much. That was very patient and well explained. Quite nice of you to do. Good job.

  • thanks, great job one of my favorite songs

  • Sweet. Thanks. You carry yourself calmly, perfectly for teaching guitar.

  • Definately one of the best tutorials on youtube. Gr8 job m8, Thanks

  • The first section is completly wrong.

  • Love the way you teach, very clear and detailed, thank you!!

  • That is real good man!

  • how are you gettin' that tone. Sounds good.

  • You now officially rock at life good sir.

  • THANKS!!! =D That was very helpful and I'll be sure to look at some more of your videos! 5 stars man, keep it up.

  • thank you this is perfect!!!! it really goes at a nice slow pace so you dont have to keep going back... you can just play with it thew whole time once and know it!!!

  • Please don't take this wrong, but the second part of the opening is wrong. The fingering is right, but Joe chicken picks with the right hand. You're a much better player than me, but I bought an insructional video of Joe a long time ago and he shows the opening. Go to my channel and it's right there. I posted it because a guy told me I was nuts. Being the guitar player you are, you'll see it instantly. You can also see Joe do a great version at the Crossroads show here on YT W/Steve Cropper.

  • @da324 Jim posted a nice video; and that Joe technique at your channel looks much easier than it is to actually play it. I'm sure Jim could play it, but maybe not teach it (?). I can't. Also, after the 'B' run, it goes to the Jimi Hendrix 'monkey cord' (x-7-6-7-8-x) before going back to the main riff

  • @deax12 I agree, but I think Jim can easliy play the intro. It's a tricky litle thing, but it makes all th difference. Jim's a great player and I apprectiate his work. I just thought I'd pass that info on to him, because I've yet to see anyone do it the way Joe does.

  • Dude this is by far the best instructional video on youtube, i subscribed, please make more these are great

  • Dude kicks ass, better than all the other lesson videos. You know what your doing man, keep up the great videos.....subscribed!

  • thanks man, this was great.

  • Nice lesson man.....Great tone......Thanks

  • close. you walk down the neck and end up at open E

    .

  • Thanks. There's a part i've been playing wring for years…and a part you don't cover…

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @brittanybowers you're a retard...see ya do better, like the other fools who show nothing and play it wrong anyway.

  • Easy to follow. Great teacher thanks.

  • Perfect ,,, helps folks like me who are not eddie van halen gifted pros like most folks who comment on vids with negatives

  • @70ORANGE Actually, while this is a great little video for those to learn with, it is not perfect. That being said, if you take what Jimosity shows in the fingerings, you can indeed get close to perfect once you listen to the record. Awesome tune to play. Now, if someone would post the bass line...

  • jeddcraw, if you tell people they need to learn some respect, you might be a redneck!

and if you need to watch this guy to learn how to play this lick, you need to get on MY level buddy! dont think i need life lessons from you, but you need guitar lessons from me! and calisun21, i dont know wtf world of warcraft is, and if thats a video game, thats why your generation cant play guitar, junior!

  • Great lesson, Thanks

  • Great job, thanks!!

  • This is the tune that opened the door for me to play leads. Haven't looked back. Love the way ya take it apart for us that depend on muscle memory to get things done Damn, I'm gettin' old. Still play this all the time..

  • Great demonstration. Thanks! I could never figure out that opening riff. Thanks for sharing.

  • so, ive never held a guitar in my life until today. Grabbed my roommate's guitar and learned this in less than an hour. I'm not sure why someone would crap on this video like our friend boneypart, who clearly has superior knowledge...my guess is that he just lost at world of warcraft and is late for band practice because his mom hasnt come home with the car yet. Whats it like living in your parent's basement? anyways, thanks for the video, i enjoyed it.

  • @Calisun21 Just posted alot of bollocks, ha? There is no way one can learn this song in an hour...maybe an experienced player...just the main riff requires hours of practicing to be executed perfectly every time played...not to mention muting the strings and changing positions with your right hand.

As for the video, probably one o the best free lessons online.

  • kelley, the title says "how to play Funk 49. the description says "how to play Funk 49 by the James Gang". you apparently have the same level of perception as the author. and, i havent resorted to name calling because im able to express myself without lowering myself to your level. Hack!

  • @boneypart You should learn some respect, BUDDY! Get on my level son! You won't be able to but trying might help you learn some life lessons that you are clearly lacking. All the best.

  • Mr boneypart. dude ,your kinda of a dick.if you dont like his version of the song then just go away.kick rocks pee on the fire ,call in the dogs, put it on the trailer, but i digress .rag on some one else'es video.

  • an intermediate level approximation with none of the nuance of Joe Walsh.

  • Wah, hahahaha!

This was one of those all time enchanting classic rock riffs.

Now I can play it too.

    Thanks Dude!!!

  • Thank you! You have made this very easy! Great video! :)

  • Damn good job! What kind of guitar is that? Is that a Firebird?

  • nice job man!!!! this is a good one!!

  • that'll work i guess, but that aint how Joe Walsh plays it....

  • Jim

thanks for the info, it's right on

  • Hanks heaps, that's awesome

  • sweet, nice job dude.

  • Jim, This is an excellent lesson. You are very step by step in your process. Thanks very much!

  • Hey Jim, Walsh is my all time favorite...not 'cause he is the 'best" ever...no such title. I love all kinds o music. Your lesson is superb. Keep it up.

  • Thank you for this video.

In the song, after the "wah hoo" part with the yelling and percussion, there's a guitar part that I haven't quite figured out. There is a dissonant chord and then some bent notes. Do you know how to do this part and could you comment on this? Thank you.

  • Nice Job Jim sounded good

  • thanks alot!

  • E minor #7

at the end of the riff...........Sup Hart!!!!!!!!!

    YYYoooooouuuuuuuuuu

  • great teacher! thank you very much.

  • nice vid.. helped me a pantload..

  • yea DEF need to play full speed first

  • great video thanks

  • thanks man helped me alot

  • you should do it in normal speed before you bore the shit out of everyone ...

  • Shut your head boy.

  • no shit, play it through a few times in the Beginning, then go back...

by the way, did he ever play it through? I couldn't get through the whole vid

  • This comment is 100% right on.

  • damn i wish i had guys like you(and yt)when i was a kid! for free! i would be 10x better today. screw guitar hero. thanks.

  • @dugless52 Hey .. I love all your guitar videos .. oops, my mistake, you don't have any. Maybe you're the one who sucks?? Ha ha ha .. loser

  • hahH

  • Great video, man. If I may assist you in an explanation, for lower level players, you want to pull that note on the 5th fret instead of push it because it's more natural to pull that note down rather than push it up. You also don't have as much bending strength in your first finger as you do in your third. Not that it can't be done but it surely isn't natural pushing that note up with that succession of notes.

    Again, fantastic video.

  • awesome vid, you are missing a part on the into. I don't know the note exactly but he alternates picking when doing the 5 note bend between either e or b, He talked about the technique in a vid he did.

  • Thank you very much for showing this!

  • Had to watch a few times, but I have it down now. Very cool riff - thanks !!

  • I really like the way that guitar sounds

  • awesome vid really helpful

  • Thanks a bunch for this lesson. It was really thorough, and you explained everything perfectly. Great Job. Thanks.

  • Gotta admit, he's gotta it down!

  • Nice Lesson mate... i will have loads of fun with this thanks to you... thanks for posting!

  • Good lesson, very good, I dont know if you got everything perfectly right like some of the comments on here, but screw em, let them post a lesson as good. I really apreciate the free teachings on youtube and everybody can benefit from a lesson that is not rushed and well done. Thanks again. Music DOES matter.

  • best lesson i've ever seen! just great

    thanks a lot

  • hey just started out. trying it on acoustic and when i slide it doesnt create that higher pitch that youre able to do.

  • first, great stuff; very helpfull

second, are those black strings or have you just not changed them in 12 years?

  • i think it's not exactly right but your instructions are really good!

  • thorough lesson. last chord,dominant,E is 076780.

    e7#9

  • this song is absolutely amazing and great teaching man!

  • u helped me learn this song man. I really appreciate the lesson. Your guitar playing is a musical explosion all over my face

  • FOUL BALL! Yuck

  • thnx that main riff was killing me

  • awsome video really good

  • This is a great video.

You have a great close up and you clearly say what you're playing.

    Thanks for putting this up.

If I may, using hybrid picking on the note after the first five notes in the intro as you let it unbend is the way Joe does it.

  • This was one of the best lessons I've seen and performed flawlessly by the teacher. He is one of the best teachers on the net in my humble opinion.

  • awesome lesson, one of the best.

  • amen bro! kick ass teacher teaching a kick ass song played it out my window for hours i love it so much I GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS!

  • you didn't play the "chuka chuka" parts and and the jimi chord at the end. otherwise, very nice lesson

  • nice vid man!

  • im learning and your a damn good teacher too . great fingerwork on hammering those strings nice job man just like joe walsh! gary

  • The strings I used on that guitar are called "DR Black Beauties" -- they are coated strings, so they retain that new feel longer than standard strings.

They are also available in other colors; black, red, blue, green, pink

  • @jimosity Thanks a lot man for sharing it !! it sounds clear and perfect !!!

  • what kind of strings are those? they look like nylon but im pretty sure they dont work on electrics unless they got a steel core

  • Pretty good instructional video. However, you are leaving out the E7#9 (Hendrix chord) that ends the run after playing the riff in B.

  • hi, i just want to thanks for posting this video, because ive been trying to learn this song for a long time and now i know how to play it, thanks alot

    \\m//

  • YES!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks!!!!!!!!

  • Great lesson! You explain all the little details very precise. your teaching is excellent! Thanks a lot!

  • I wish my guitar teacher would tell me about those palm muted rides on the A string! Those are easy!

I will get this song down....maybe next year!
