If I was a bat and lived in caves I would prefer high places so I am not standing in bat guano all day. They most likely evolved to hanging upside down since there are no branches in a cave.
Not only in trees, but a lot of bats live in caves. I know in caves there are flesh eating beetles on the floor that help keep the cave clean. For bats especially babies the safest place too be is on the ceiling of the cave.
Doesn't have to be a 'why' for them to hang upside down. Perhaps their non-bat ancestors experienced a selective pressure to hang upside down. Now that they've been doing it for so many generations, there's no selective pressure to make them not hang upside down.
Less work for the heart, during hibernation, to keep blood circulating around the brain? It is too easy to extract one feature of morphology in isolation and apply cause and effect principles forgetting that ,if you believe in evolution, everything developed in unison. Maybe it is the question that is wrong?
bats hang upside down because they evolved like that.. apparently it's a good trait to have that ability.. that skill was preferred by natural selection in order to survive and reproduce.. they also like living in caves and the best place to hide in a cave.. is the ceiling =) that's also why they are pretty much blind (they are nocturnal animals) and use a form of sonar (biosonar) as a means of navigation..
look at their hands.. i guess thats why :P

they look like crazy pigs with silly noses

I believe this must be something related to natural selection.
There must be some advantage for hanging like this.

Because since they prefer the darkest places on earth, which are caves (where their usual habitat for many years has been)
1.In caves there arent tree branches or many ledges to stand upright on.
2.To stay on the ground they would become easy prey for most non-flying predators.
3.To hang on the side of the cave would be ball breaking.. like staying in 'The Human Flag'.. try it.. :]p
4.So the only possibility Remains the cealing of the cave.
-Blood circulation adapts by natural selection ;]

maybe a high position is safer? I mean, like birds sleep on branches - not on the ground....
