Wow! Fantastic Vid. If you take my favorite artist and have him play and sing with my favorite Bruce song, with Bruce Springsteen, this is what you get!! I wonder if Jackson is the "Dude from L.A." in that '69 Chevy?? Thank you!
The Boss and the Pretender- both are awesome musicians in their own right-and the backing musicians here are also quite talented. Browne and Springsteen have had a long and happy friendship and musical history together- and hopefully will continue to do so for many many more years.
Bruce, Jackson, and Roy all all very wonderful musicians in their own ways, and you don't see them judging each other, so why should we compare them unfairly? I respect all 3 of them and many other musicians, whether I like their music or versions of songs or not.
The magnifisence of this performance is boundless. Jackson and Bruce is a perfect match brilliant. And i adore the perfection of proffessor Roy bittans piano. there is no other word for it: it is absolutely Exquisid
The West Coast meets the East Coast, like "Two-Lane Blacktop" a movie that a Springsteen once mentioned shares a kindred spirit to this song, seeing Browne and Springsteen on stage together singing this song, it is Hellman's Movie beautifully encapsulated, where two drivers race from California to the East.
2004... amazing. The last time I saw Springsteen was in the late '80s. And it was incredible (do I really need to say that?) Just the best show(s) I'd ever seen. We went back three nights in a row. And I've seen a lot of bands. What amazes me is that this show looks like it might have been just as good.
@stanslater1 no you see that's where you'r wrong emmylou harris is a great singer\ songwriter i agree. but her voice doesn't suit this song at all. Her version of this song gives me nothing it's not even in the same league. She's bringing shame to this magnificent song. Jackson and Bruce's version is the best version by far it's exquizid and i belive you know that. you can't say that her version is better because it just isn't and that's the end of it. I would go as long as to say it's rubbish.
Danny Federici is in the heart of all springsteen´s e-street band fans we miss you god bless your soul. thank you Bruce for giving us all dreams in the body of fantastic songs, songs that make us laugh, dance, dream, cry and think, think about love, about life it self, about hope, better days coming, and how we can learn with the past. for all this thank you Bruce, thank very much.
by a many number of people. go to work ask people about Jackson. see just how good they know him. you will be sadly suprised. i never thought he got the credit he deserved
He was huge in the middle 70's - and one of the best singer/songwriters. He's been forgotten, only because so much time has passed. He's not doing much lately. But think of his body of work - Running On Empty, The Pretender, Here Comes Those Tears Again,That Girl Could Sing, Take It Easy (The Eagles), Somebody's Baby and of course, The Load Out Song and Stay.
you forgot a few - i thought i was a child - the times you've come - for everyman - the late show - late for the sky - colors of the sun - our lady of the well - sing my songs to me - for a dancer - before the deluge - road and the sky - the road - shaky town - you love the thunder - sleeps dark and silents gate - the naked ride home - sky blue and black - the fuse - your bright baby blues - song for adam - jamaica say you will - something fine - rock me on the water - these days - i'm alive
seriously this is so good. I'm starved of great live music. Have just booked dylan 2009 but these guys together would be amazing. Ive seen Springsteen-#jackson Browne, the loadout was my background studying. Sorry for the ramble but this has reminded me of proper music!
I always come back to this video when I need a lift and I have been blessed to see both of these gentlemen several times over the decades; but never together...LOVE this so much...THANK YOU.
Just how many great songs has Bruce written? Not all are so evocative as this, perhaps Darkness On The Edge of Town, perhaps Reason To Believe, Atlantic City, The River, Thunder Road, Missing, American Skin, - genius!
Maybe 200, but he's been at a while. 40 years. Heck, that's only 5 a year. This one, "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (1978) came out when he was 28. Every song is brilliant. The albums that preceded it, "Born to Run" (1975), and followed it, "The River" (1980), "Nebraska" (1982) "Born in the USA" (1984), heck, right until "Magic" (2007), have few mediocre songs. Oh, then there's "Tracks" (1998), 66 songs not deemed good enough for a "regular" album.
Oops. The song is, of course, Racing in the Street. Darkness is the album.
Then there are the songs he's written and never released, but have been covered by other people. "Because the Night" was written for this album, but it didn't make the cut. He gave it to Patti Smith, whom Bruce admires enormously, and allowed her to change the lyrics in one verse and take co-authorship credit.
Check him playing Because, live in 1978; the version that's about 7:40.
I love Springsteen and Browne. I only wish there had been better videography of their performances. These are two of the best American songwriter/singers of all time. They deserve better than these well-meant but amateur recordings.

This is a quite nice version. However, the Emmylou Harris version is absolutely heart wrenching.

@stanslater1 Patty Griffin does an amazing version as well.
I really like Jackson Browne, I grew up listening to both him and Springsteen, but he just seems so uncomfortable...really stiff.

The organ solo at the end of this song has to be one of the best keyboard solos in rock 'n roll history. Very moving and very powerful.

He's added so much to Bruces sound through the years. I agree, I think he's one of r&r's great piano players, so powerful and beautiful.
Can't think of one good reason the E Street Band isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame with Bruce, for that matter.
The Heartbreakers are, w/Petty.

Songs like this were written when America was America !
Cheeseburgers, a gal sitting by your side, Muscle cars at the local drive in, Rock n Roll, and small town USA.
Thanks Bruce !
