Very informative video-series. Thanks so much for putting so much work into these videos. I realize that this was mostly an advertisement for Audix, but you still gave a lot of very helpful general tips on how to effectively mic a drumset.
Hi, I have a question. Hopefully somebody here can help me.
I have the Audix DP7 package. The D2s, D4, D6, and i5 are all in place, and are working great on my it. However, I have a high hat and crash on the left and a ride over on the right. I have the two overhead mics left.
What would be the best way to go about mic-ing these?
If I set it up normal overhead style, will it be able to pick up the high hat sufficiently enough, or is there a different/better way to do this?
The tom mics sound alot like sennheiser md421 II in my oppinion (good thing)! but which mic is more durable the sm57 or i5? trying to make a "sound" descision (pun intended).
Okay, dude's groovin. I can dig it, thanks for the videos!
~My opinion...drums are meant to be heard with a "spacial delay"
mic in the room behind the drums with 2 overheads low down to the kit would be my standard if I did all my own sound. heh. the Doppler effect approach!
They panned the mix differently when using the last overheads, making the drumsound much better. At the first overhead setup you can notice much more pan right. SCX25A theres sound everywhere equally.
Fucking awesome sound considering no processing was involved. Then again I've never recorded drums with high end mics using an expensive set in a studio, so...

Great sound. Just wondering, I notice a little piece of duct tape on the heads. What is that for? Thanks for the tips.

Hi Benjamin. The best way is to get a dedicated mic for the high hat (ADX51 is good) .
The 2 overheads should pick up the cymbals as per the suggestion in the video.

Great videos, very helpful! I have an Audix 7-piece fusion set. (2 SCX1s, 1 F6 Bass Drum mic, 3 F2 Tom Mics, and the same Snare mic you used)
Here's my question...
I have mine positioned similarly to how you placed yours, but what gain levels did you use for each mic?
