Property/home owners quite often have to get various sorts of permission to build or change stuff on their property. If the building is historical or if the changes will clash with the neighboring buildings it can often be harder to get permision. some suburban homeowners associations can even tell you how often to mow and water your yard.

This site has not violated any of the zoning laws and the developer has agreed to the construction. The community board has given the community center a green light to build. It's not a legal landmark so it can't be taken over by the state. The only thing stand in the way of these people exercising their rights is the public.

Worshiping is covered by the 1st amendment but building a house of worship is not so the 1st amendment can't be used in argument to defend the building of a house of worship but can be used to defend what is worshiped in that house of worship provided its not incitement to violence.

Property/home owners quite often have to get various sorts of permission to build or change stuff on their property. If the building is historical or if the changes will clash with the neighboring buildings it can often be harder to get permision. some suburban homeowners associations can even tell you how often to mow and water your yard.

@bigge525 Interesting point: Congress can't prevent "the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". It dosn't t say anything about building houses of worship. So being christian is a right but building a church is not.
If islam was just a religion then whatever. But the problem is is that it's always been a totalitarian political movement also. Every terrorist attack can be traced back to an Imam or Mosque.

@EdgeNicx Re: legal interpretations. A very good point. But as anyone who read my statement can see I didn't propose banning it. I was clarifying what is actually said in the 1st amendment. Worshiping is covered by the 1st amendment but building a house of worship is not so the 1st amendment can't be used in argument to defend the building of a house of worship but can be used to defend what is worshiped in that house of worship provided its not incitement to violence.

And you've misread the Dept of Homeland security report, it didn't claim that the greatest terrorist threat facing the US is from veterans, but that they were just a potential demographic of a specific type of terrorism, homegrown terrorism. Which is a perfectly accurate assessment, as the majority of terrorist attacks on US soil were performed by veterans.

Now, if we go by the actual definition of "terrorism" (ie acts of violence targeted against civilians for the purpose of inciting terror in order to fulfill a political or ideological goal), then the majority of homegrown US terrorists are veterans. That doesn't mean that all veterans or terrorists, the only people who are being accused of terrorism are the terrorists. Street gangs don't kill each other for political or ideological reasons, and they don't do it for the purpose of scaring the public into supporting a political ideal. Most of them don't even hold any comprehension of politics. They kill over money, petty territory disputes, the facilitation of organized crime. But most of the deaths are just random and senseless acts of violence. No administration has ever categorized gang warfare as terrorism.

I haven't redefined terrorism, I'm going by the definition established by the Dept of Homeland security since its inception. That is the definition I quoted earlier. The fact that the previous administration's War on Terror made no effort to combat general civilian crime in America is kind of sort of proof that the Bush administration didn't define it as terrorism.
