This was probably a piece of space junk and it may well have belonged to the Soviets or some other unfriendly country. NASA was monitoring its return to Earth and were ready to retrieve it when it landed.

i think it is a failed test drive from area 51 which is said by bob lazar to be where flying saucers are being created and tested.. and the helicopters were the government's and immediately went to the craft and picked it up so no one could intercept.
