My little daugther made me search for this song, since we live in germany it was rather strange to me hearing her hum an irish lullaby and I ask her were she had it from. Actually she rememberd it from Barney Gamble in the toiletts ;-) so well and liked it so much so I had to promise to find the lyrics for her. Thanks to YouTube we will soon sing it together and spread some Irish feeling in germany. All our love to dear Ireland and all the friends we havent met yet.
@Elizabethsaddiction yea thats the most sentimental scene in movie's history! besides this one when francie nolan cries on the roof after her father's death in "a tree grows in brooklyn"
@gingerflower93 I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your Grandmother. My
grandmother also used to sing this to me, but that was more than 40 years ago. When you finally do have a child, you can keep your Grandmother.s memory alive by singing this to your infant. God Bless.
All the Irish songs by Bing Crosby remind me of my grandfather...he died when I was only 3. I don't remember too many things about him, but these songs bring tears to my eyes and remind me of him. I'm sure we shared a dance to this.
My brother is named Danny in honor of his favorite song, Danny boy.
Rest in peace to all our great Irish relatives who have passed, but left us with beautiful music.
My grandfather use to sing this to us growing up..when my son was born 2 years ago I really wanted to catch on flim him singing it to my son so he would always remember his great grampa and that we would always remember the song he sang... Unfortunatly he came down with dementia and last spring due to a malpractice at his home he passed on. This song brings so many tears to my eyes. Love you Grampa. xoxo
i'm related to him he is my great great great uncle and i wish i could see him but i know he can see me and how much i love him and uncle ben i love you and you had a amazing
my grandmother sang this to me when i was a young girl. her father sang it to her...i am now 23 and my grandma is 65...she will still sing it to me on the phone. i couldnt imagine not hearing her sing it to me again..i think i might have to record her
@scarletttdior Yes, record her and also get her to talk about her father singing it to her. Family history is not only historically important, but I know first hand that one day, that recording will be a priceless treasure to you. AND future generations!
@krkerwood1171979 my grandfather used to sing this to me when I was young as well. He died from Alzheimers at the age of 58 when I was 10, it is one of the best memories I have of him. It is a funny song for me, I listen to it when I am sad or, when I hear it unexpectedly, I get melancholy thinking about him. I hope by now you have a beautiful new baby and your grandfather has had the chance to sing this to him/her. Congratulations!
My mom had only sang two songs to me to sleep. This, and this in a softer voice...I can't listen to it without tearing up since she passed. Not something a teenager should ever experience..Miss you Ma..I'd sing this song constantly over and over to bring you back for just a moment and see your face again.
My mom's Grandmother sang this to her and she sung it to my sister and me, and now my niece and nephew. I'm going to have to learn it so I can pass on the tradition. :) Thanks for sharing, it brings me great comfort.
No matter the mood I'm in, this always calms me down--regardless the situation I'm in. Though I'venever had anyone sing this song to me, I found it on an old CD my mum had on a dusty shelf. I couldn't believe she didn't listen to this song daily! I've gotta hand it to Bing that he's got one of the best voices I've ever heard. The tederness in his voice makes this lullaby hit home with me....
My grandfather sang this to me all the time when I was little. We are hoping and praying he is still with us when my first lil one comes into the world in October. He's 99 now and told me just yesterday that he wants to sing this to the baby! Such wonderful memories!
@krkerwood1171979 . My father used to cry when he heard this song because HIS father (my grandfather) used to sing it to his six Irish children when they were ill. My grandfather died in 1970, age 99. My father in 1989, The singing went on in the 1920's. Good luck to your grandfather!
@krkerwood1171979 He got to sing this to the baby and we have it on video...of course I cried like a baby when my grandfather started singing it! Thanks for all the well wishes!
@1puppetmaster1 yes he did, we got it on video...he didn't sing the whole song, but sang enough of it to bring me to tears (happy of course) and it's on video so my son will be able to see it when he gets older....it was an amazing sight
@krkerwood1171979 ....well.. I hope you're happy, your story has me in tears, and I make it a rule never to cry LOL... oh well, once in awhile tears are a good thing...
@kerryincolumbus didn't mean to make you cry....I've been listening to this song a lot the last few days as I just celebrated my birthday for the first time without my grandfather, it's been bitter-sweet, especially when my son stares at the picture I have of my grandfather on my wall....I know that Papa is up in Heaven watching over my son and I and getting the biggest kick out of how smart and big my lil man is getting (he'll be 3 months on 2/5)....a good cry is good for ya!
My gramma used to sing this to me, and her other grandkids. And today I was singing it to my 14 -1/2 year old lab "puppy", and I think she loved it as much as I always did. It seemed to sooth her... Thanks for the post~~~ *tears*
This song actually makes me cry. My mom used to sing this all the time to me in the rocking chair. It's probably one of the earliest memories I have of her.
It has been a long time since i've heard this. My granda used to sing this to me as a child when i was drifting off. He was like a father to me and now at 24 im still crying like a child at this song. Thank you for the memories, it warms my heart everytime i listen to it.
my father used to sing this to me every night after reading Mouse with the Red Motorcycle to me. When I have a young one I will sing this to them after their bed time stories.
This reminds me so much of my grandparrents. Both From Ireland. Sadly, they passed away 10 weeks apart when I was 8 years old. My gran used to sing this song to me and every time I hear it I start to cry and think of her.
@LouMcPhelan, I'm with you.. my Irish gramma sang this to us grandchildren too....Luckily I was 12 when she died so I got to know her a bit. I hope my siblings are singing it to their children...
:) My family has been in Australia for generations, over a hundred years since they were brought over as convicts, but my mum still sings this song to me when I'm sad.
