  • Wow he really does kind of look like Andrew Garfield.

  • "I hate the smell of dampness, don't you? It's such a, I don't know, creepy smell."

I don't really know why, but I think this is such a great line.

  • One of the best scenes ever.

  • These two actors are so good that it just makes you want to applaud.

  • This movie started the horror and shlasher fims.

  • @tilliecw

Unbelievably so, I've always assumed that Quinto used Perkin's performance in this role as a major influence when trying to get into Sylar's character. Not sure if he could beat the original though.

  • First time I saw this movie I thought the guy that plays Norman was one of the best actors ever.

  • @DrPoon Me as well!

  • Does anyone else think that Zachary Quinto could do a freakishly good Norman Bates? He almost even looks like him...

  • that suckas gonna get it >:D

  • Martin Balsam's job in this movie is astonishing, almost unbelievable. What a great actor he was.

  • If Norman had a Maid she whould call him Master Bates

  • Martin Balsam was great he had a good caricture in Death Wish 3

  • thats a beautiful smile :)

  • hahaha i love how Arbogast has a slight hint of being a jerk when talking to Mr. Bates

  • Poor Norman. Even in the second movie he triied so hart to be normal after he got out but the bitches drove him over the edge.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE this scene <3 Anthony was gorgeous in this movie

  • lol damps a creepy smell? lol!!!

  • Perkins was a very handsome man. He appears delicate at first but when his mother comes into play his "feathers" are riled and asserts his manhood and rights. Just remember, you may be able to fool Norman Bates but you'll be incapable of fooling his MOTHER!

  • Brilliant piece of acting by both Perkins and Balsam.

  • They just don't underplay the parts like this any more. Perfectly done.

  • Amasterpiece of acting by both

  • This is perhaps the best written and acted scene in the film. Martin Balsam as the private investigator Arbogast is so well cast and delivers his lines with expert ability as does Anthony Perkins. There is a naturalness to the dialog and a logic to the conversation.

"You want to buy a motel?" asks Norman which makes perfect sense as Arbogast had earlier said "the last two days I've been to so many motels ...".

"I didn't think the police went looking for people who aren't in trouble" LOL

  • arbogast knows he has his man, but won't give that away just yet.

  • @Cromag99

I don't agree because at 8:50 he says he thinks he "got all there was to get" and that he "will have to pick-up the pieces from here." He also wants to "question the mother" so, he has the wrong end of the stick.

  • @OrodesIII Arbogast was just humoring him so he wouldn't run off, he knew something smelled bad after all of Norman's stuttering and fumbling.....

  • @Cromag99

You are forgetting that Arbogast was talking on the telephone to Marion's sister, not to Norman, when he said he believed he got all he could get, except from the "mother."

  • Why do women love these psycho's?

  • @Cromag99

It's only physical. No women would love him if Norman was ugly, bald and overweight.

  • @Cromag99 because they are UNUSUAL. Different. This is exciting by definition. The same as being ordinary, usual, is BORING

  • love this scene! excellent performance by Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates. He's the only Psycho in my eyes, no matter who tries like Vince Vaughn in the '98 remake :( the original is my favorite horror movie 5*****

  • It is astonishing and a tribute to Anthony Perkins's acting skills that he went from the good Quaker son in Friendly Persuasion 1956 to Norman Bates a few years later. Unreal.

  • when the detective suggests they had sex at 4:06....thelookon his face is soooooooo cutttteeeeee XD

  • Anthony Perkins was amazing in this film... he's so cute that I almost couldn't believe Norman was a killer ;)

  • why perkins dont get an oscar for this movie?? its unfair..

  • This movie was made nearly 30 years before I was born and yet I still consider it one of, if not THE, best horror movie of all time. Today's producers should watch this to realize that they don't have to spend billions on effects to make a good movie.

  • @Daanioo you mean director because only Hitchcock can do cinema, not Spielberg.

  • @Daanioo well said

  • @Daanioo very true i 100 percent agree with thou

  • "She may have fooled me but she didn"t fool my mother"

Amazing acting by Anthony Perkins. If only todays movies were even half as good as this masterpiece.

  • at 6:48 gives chills down my spine

  • 4:06 -Did you spend the night with her ?

    -No

-Well then how would you know she dident make any phone calls ?

I love that line, brilliantly acted and directed.

  • Anthony Perkins was a really good actor, and he could have done many more things... Too bad that his performance as Norman Bates "cursed" him, as I guess most people could not remember him if not for this outstanding performance.

Least that's just, like, my opinion, men.

  • i'm in love

  • I love a good detective scene. I think David Lynch has great nostalgia for this type of detective too - watch the 2 detectives in Lost Highway and at the start of Mulholland Drive.

  • I love how anthony perkins gets really nervous when hes getting interogated. Great Acting !!

  • It's interesting these two reunited in Murder on the Orient Express.

  • He's not gelling?

  • i don't think i've ever seen a shot like the one of his jaw

  • Can you upload the whole movie?

  • Thumbs up for Norman's grin at 7:49!!!

  • @homesauce2000 not as good as the one at the end but its still pretty good haha

  • @homesauce2000 I lol'd!!

  • Arbogast is possibly the coolest name ever.

  • just a masterpiece of film not like the trash made by white trash in their stupid directors chair that we have today great acting outstanding

  • " She might have fooled me, but she didn't fool my mother " ..... maybe the best line ever in a movie.

  • There's a bit of darkness behind the sentences in the middle of the clip-

    "Did she leave early?"

    "Oh yes...very early."

  • one of my favourite movies! great great acting and wonderful directed.

  • Perkins and Balsam are flawless in this scene.

  • the way it's shot when he leans his head down at @2:59 is so creepy and brilliant.

  • I love how Norman smiles as Arbogast drives away -3

  • @ilestmoi i always get the shivers at that scene

  • and this is why we all know and love him <3

  • favorite clip fromt he movie -- thanks for posting

  • I geuss wikipedia failed me XD

  • @mewmew5234 anthony perkins was a product of his time -- he had a few male affairs but was married later in life. he died of aids complications.

the character is also one of many gay murderers in htichcock movies. hitchcock had a strange fascination with gay murderers. the movie rope is even based on a true story of a gay murderers. one of my personal faves is martin landau in north by northwest.

but this scene is great -- "if it doesn't jell it isn't aspic, and this ain't jellin'." .

  • Candy ???

  • brilliant scene

  • if psychos are this hot I should work in "someplace"

y'all know what i mean hahah

  • I love his stutter >3 its too bad the actor was gay :(

  • @mewmew5234 Don't know where you heard that but he wasn't. Bi suposedly but not gay

  • @mewmew5234

Where did you get that idea? He was married with two sons.

  • omg norman may be shy but he is so damn hot!!!

  • this actor seems like a really nice guy

  • My god, what a bone structure he (Perkins) had! And that smile! *swoons*

  • The most beautiful psycho everrr!!! Best acting ever!!!

  • omg can someone please post the whole movie on youtube!!! AHh lol

  • My Favourite Movie of All Time!

    Amazing Scene!

  • The acting is superb!

  • "the... the n-n-n-n-next morning sunday!"

Oh, what a cute psychokiller with such puppy eyes :))) And perfect acting! <3 Love this movie!

  • @xTERYLx This movie is perfect in every way.

  • creepy, i was the 6,666th viewer.

  • incredible acting--better than I remembered. Early on, when Bates says "...I don't know, creepy smell," that really was chilling because it is disarming and sounds so real.

  • he looks like a friendly person

    and hot

  • Best scene ever, suberbly acted by perkins!!!

  • notice how Perkins adds stuttering to Normans character, simply brilliant!

  • i bought this movie

  • 12 cabins , 12 vacancies

  • lol i just remebered that little fun fact lol in his mind it probably would have played out like this

norman: DIE candy corn DIE XDDD

  • lol. yeah. probably.

  • lol i wonder what kind of candy hes eating

??? if i was to geuss it would probably be candy corn xD i love that shit

  • actually it IS candy corn. becuz in psycho 3, he throws a bag of candy down in frustration, and u can plainly see it's candy corn. but thats in 1990. who knows? it may be the same.

  • Subtle tension... and great little camera angles too, like at 3:00 (right under Norman's neck - to emphasis his nervous chewing) ...this movie is filled with great subtle camera angles like that - that's why it's such a damn good flick!!

  • thefilmprojector: I completely agree -- a beautifully acted scene by Balsam and Perkins -- and especially Perkins. It's as if they're not acting at all. And Perkins -- so natural, as if he knows he's guilty. Classic.

  • Can I be lame for a second? What hotel only has 12 rooms? Even very small hotels. I've never seen a hotel with that few rooms, ever.

  • It's a MOTEL. They had some pretty small ones back then.

  • Yeah, fair point.

  • arbogast reminds me of that guy thats on tmz and peoples court.

  • mhm me to, it's so cute, and hard to believe, during the whole scene, he was eating candy lol

  • I love Norman, I dont see him as a Villian, but perhaps the Anti-Hero that you can't help but root for. If I had to stay in the Bates Motel, hell, I'd enjoy talking with Norman until morning, at least then he wouldnt kill me lol

  • ahem. hahaha. well, what about when he starts saying how tired he is and he really needs to get up to the house to bed and that his mother is going to be worried and needs him, being that it is so late.....

  • That would be when I'd be like "Ok, but I'm putting a chair in front of the door"

  • Ok, but if you decide to take a shower remember to close the door.

  • yupyup lol

  • Brilliant scene. Superb work by both actors.

  • Anthony Perkins was a wonderful actor! I wasn't even alive when he was alive, but still I miss him.

  • i wish he be alive again. never gonna be missed

  • It's so hard because he is a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder, as well as a murderer, but when I first saw this film a good week ago, I couldn't help but feeling deep sorrow for him. They sure picked a young talented attractive actor who could play the role so convincingly.

  • @BelugababyBlue In my opinion, despite not being to "escape" the role of Norman Bates, Anthony Perkins WAS and ALWAYS WILL BE Norman Bates! As far as Perkins being choosen to play killer Norman, "don't judge, or TRY NOT TO JUDGE a book by its cover."

  • that was a PERFECT line by norman bates around :58 when he says "creepy". such good acting

  • He was so perfect here

  • Nobody could have played this part but Anthony Perkins, RIP

  • tony/norman looks so innocent.....great!

when he begins t stutter, i'd like to give him a hug ._.

    xD

  • I'll bet Hitchcock had Anthony read his lines only once for this scene, to make it look real.

  • I love this part so much!!! Thanks !!!
