  • only the most amazing guitar duo ever! this song touches me on such a deep level! love ya Dave

  • Why does this song define my last relationship with my ex so perfectly?

  • This perfomance was done on my birthday, If I coulda been there it woulda been RRad!

  • that's the shit!!!!! pure greatness.

  • I don't really like Dave matthews anymore, but this song is pure gold. Never get's old

  • This song is incredible, if anyones interested, check out my acoustic cover on my page, I dont think its all that bad, although its got nothin on this!

  • Its almost like the quitar is like part of his arm or something, its seems so natural! Man I love me some Dave and Tim!!

  • You can tell it's such a hard song to play

  • @MysticDMBherb ohh yea this is up there with Satellite. so tricky to play and sing. you just have to play it about 1000000 times until its like second nature...or be Dave.

  • @TrajektorieLogik Haha yea thats why I like Dave, his songs are so good most people can't even play them. Good thing I don't like Satellite though, one less song I will try to spend months trying to figure out

  • It's not that hard to play. Just takes a little practice and good timing.

  • I love the transition from the gloomy verses to the bright and cheerful sounding chorus; it makes this song perfect. Even my cousin who doesn't like Dave Matthews music (I don't know how or why???) loves this song.

  • tims still a beast....

  • whoever that one person is that clicked thumbs down must've accidentally done it ;)

  • begreat D&t performance

  • very first dave song i fell in love with....

  • @TheSxysdy me too!

This seems to be a first for a lot of people.

  • here's the thing with DMB, every single they release makes me want to hate them but they have gems like this that will keep me a fan for life.

  • this song is a masterpiece...lol, love it when dave shakes his left hand in the end because it hurts of playing this song...I can totally understand that, because I have to do this as well after playing the stone ^^

  • What's he say to Tim around 5:30?

  • @sheabraden dave had skipped the part "i was just wondering..." the last time through so i thinking he was letting tim know that he was just going to go into it.

  • @bwb0028 I think your right, thanks

  • @sheabraden He says "chorus, man"

  • this song is trippy when youre super blazed

  • i can confirm this

  • This song is about sharing his soul with another, the woman that he needs. Do not think about it too much!

  • this song is about a lot of things. its about his dead sister, about how people perceive him and his band, about black and white, about the struggle, about how he just want to express his feeling in his song to the fans (I was wondering if you would come along and hold up my head, i will do the same for you). about whatever you want it to be. different people with different view. His music is all about wisdoms and love.

  • I like your interpretation. What do you think about "Spoon"? I always ask people, and I get an off the wall answer, or 2 specific things! My interpretation of "The Stone" is similar to yours, but mine of "Spoon" would probably be different! I don't know! DMB for Life

    Peace

  • this song is about whatever i want it to be about.. that's the beauty of being a fan. And I like my interpretation.

  • pdiddyx123,

the song you're talking about is halloween. that one is about him proposing to a girl several times. this song is death. the stone is a gravestone, and there are other death references.

  • Not to sound like a pompous git, but you guys have it all wrong. IBYU is about him proposing to the girl, the Stone is about his Sister (Anne) who was murdered by her husband who turned the gun on himself after killing her, and Grey Street inspired by Anne Sexton, the poet. These are the way things are to the extent of my knowledge (I trust the biography I read Dave).

  • i would prob agree with u on the stone part if the chorus wasnt there...

  • I hope that dave prays for Tim everyday because, even if dave writes all the songs, the acoustic versions without Tim reynolds are really not the same.I never heard him soloing twice the same the way on the same song

  • uhhmmmmm is tim sick or something...im very out of the loop with things like this. is there something i dont know

  • sick song.. good songwriting.. this song is about him proposing for his 4th time to his girlfriend b4 his wife now.. the stone is the ring he was gonna propose with

  • Wrong........

  • I'm not calling you out, but what is it about then?

  • It was about his sister who was killed by her husband. (Anne I think her name was?) In Africa.

This was written long before that girl he proposed to for 4 times. The song about that is called Grey Street.

  • ill back you up is about the proposal you can find the audio of it in concert. dave says this is about a girl i asked her to marry me 4 times, and she said no 4 times and im glad, fuck her

  • agreed.

  • even what tim does is not that hard?

  • timmy just takes the same notes and plays em at diff spots on the neck

    so awesome

  • dude life is not fair i wish my hands moved like that lol

  • I accidentally met Dave and Tim when they played a free concert for Obama here in my town. I am a reporter and I was trying to find the line for media when an officer directed me through the wrong door. Once inside, I managed to find Dave and Tim on the stage in a completely empty auditorium! They were checking the sound and Dave turns to me and nods hello and says, "Awesome". And that was that. Five feet away from my favorite musician of all time. I took video and pics thank god!

  • was that the concert in richmond?? or another one? i was at the concert at the seigal center and it was AMAZING. after that show, i got to go backstage w/ his family and hang out for a while...it was great!

  • In Bloomington, Indiana.

    Indiana University.

  • I accidentally bumped into him at a urinal of a jazz club in NY. I had to have a second look because his face was so familiar and then it hit me.. He saw my face and gave me a "please don't let all these people know who I am" look, so we just gave each other a nod and went our seperate ways. Thinking back on it now, being in a jazz club and all I wonder how more people weren't aware of who he was at the time....?

  • He was probably trying to say, "I can't go when you're staring at me!!"

  • lol no... It was when I was walking in and he was walking out that the "bump" happened

  • I finally got to see the two of them together in Houston last year and man what a great show. They compliment each other so well. I love how Tim's eyes are closed almost all the time when he plays. True talent the two of them!

  • Dave Matthews is an incredibly talented musician, to play that picking style/ strumming and sing all at the same time is incredibly difficult and he does it no problem with someone else playin a different sound over him. If you ever Heard "When the world ends" he's playing a broken strum pattern and the song is off beat from his singing but it sounds amazing.

  • yeah ik. insane.

  • There are many things I love about Dave's writing and the DMB and Tim, but one thing that always gets me, aside from the beautiful music, is the way Dave's left-hand fingers float and dance about the fretboard. And he's singing!? Jeez. I mean, just watching his fretting hand move on the fretboard is an added plus about watching him play - inspirational, like his music.

  • Im a hetrosexual male, but ya know what... I well fancy Dave Matthews haha. It's a bit like that band 'gay for johnny depp' LOL

  • if anything in the world could be perfect this song would be it :)

  • This was my first Dave and Tim show, and it was infuckingCREDIBLE. What a great vibe!

  • very lucky to see the stone then savor it

  • u can have SO much fun ... with me W

  • man the thing that i love about dmb soo much is that...his songs are like different genre...you cant compare them because they are great in their own unique way....my favorite song for dave changes like every 2 months lol

  • My favorite song of all time after Lie in our graves. Just perfect, and LIOG is a step above perfect. Words were never made to describe something this good.

  • Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds + MY FAVOURITE SONG = omg.... thanks for sharing there!!!

    <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 FUCKING AMAZING

  • yes I agree THETRENONE but don't you ever forget about TREY!!

  • regardless of whether you like dave's music or not, you would be ignorant to say he is anything less than a great musician. the skill required to pull off what he does is unbelievable, and there is so much more to his music than almost everything else out there

  • right on

  • amen

  • Hell yes.

  • oh yeah

  • word

  • haha! "word"!!! I'm bringing it back!

  • @buiznass

i absolutely agree...his songwriting along....leaves me speechless...he's a poet and it's amazing.....and his words have helped me through some dark days and nights...i'd go watch him again anytime

  • again...two words:

    fuckin awesome

  • the last two minutes are amazing. dave n tim are miracles to the world.

  • This song is in such an uncommon meter.

    Offbeat...

    I love it.

This pair are together the best guitar musicians of our generation.

It's good to know real music still exists.

  • These two are amazing. I'm glad they did this song...it's always gotten under my skin. Love it!!!

  • There's just nothing bad you could say about this. Just try. I dare ya.

  • goosebumps, amazing dave

  • Love it

  • Was this song (with Tim) released on any albums?

  • No sir. The only releases Dave and Tim have are Luther College and the bonus disc for Some Devil. Neither of which "The Stone" is on. They are releasing a new CD/DVD from Radio City Music Hall in New York, and The Stone isn't on that either.

  • @cityondown36 and also he did play guitar for it on Before These Crowded Streets

  • @Connorchaos While true, it's not a Dave and Tim only version of the song.

  • @cityondown36 true indeed. i see your point.

  • tim needs to turn the volume up on his guitar

  • he is a genius! beautifull voice! wow!

  • oh yeah tell me about it....i was young...here rents hated me!...you know how that story goes

  • Love this song!!! I had gf back in the day and my life with her was just as this song lays out

  • Hahaha, probably not good considering the opening line

"...I have this creeping suspicion that things here are not as they seem..."

  • oh yeah tell me about it....i was young...here rents hated me!...you know how that story goes

  • ummm ..... this song is not about parents hating their daughter's boyfriend ..... if your life played out like this song, you'd have murdered your girlfriend then offed yourself afterwards ..... this song is about Dave's sister Anne who was murdered by her husband who then killed himself ..... please get some DMB education .....

  • i wasn't talking about the song's meaning to Dave. i was talking about how the song relates to me. song's do that from time to time, u relate to them. so thank you on the leason. I didn't need it but none the less thanks any ways for clearing something up that wasn't cloudy. hope u have a good day

  • haha i love how these people are jumping all over you. its kinda funny considering how they have no idea what they're talking about. don't worry davemband91 i hear ya bro,.
