@blackteemr251 no i know where the song comes from. The Rebirth Brass Band. but what the fuck are you talking about mardi gras swag? what the fuck is that. please explain to me
FAMU's version is better is you enjoy your football games better while listening to classical music. There is not personality in FAMU's version. This mversion makes you wanna get up and zydeco....you might not know what that is. That's for my Louisianian.. ;-)
I had not seen FAMU perform this song, but I am from the NOLA area and am very familiar with "Do Whatcha Wanna." After reading some comments posted here on FAMUs version versus SU, I watched a video of FAMU. FAMU's version is good, but they do play this song too fast. @HB7777777 I hear ya.....we play it faster because that is the culture of Florida. We took it and tried to make it our own. But dual respect on the topic.
that might sound like garbage but the note that the tubas are playing is like a note that a trumpet from southern would hit. its such a high note for a tuba to play. i would know cuz i play tuba.
Tubas if u can't go up tonguing dont do that at all cause it sounds bad. Other than that the band sounded good my personal favorite SU traditional song.
gsu means Great Southern University...gram will neva be as gud as da jukebox so yall shoodnt even sho up to the bayou classic botb...go play j-stank or sumbody

About bands playing N.O.secondline music: Any brass band in cities other than N.O. can play this to the best of their ability, but if the local people does'nt have the culture or spirit ( dancing included ) , they wont have the FULL spirit of secondline such as in New Orleans. imagine a brass band somewhere else trying to entice a crowd to follow them in the streets ( similar to N.O. ) just because they showed up. If you can do it like N.O. on any given sunday then i'll stand corrected.
It's a college band, meaning (people from all over the country) coming to play for a LA band. I def disagree. Im from B.R. and i gets down to secondline!!
@225GETWITIT, The thing about secondline music, it's "born" in New Orleans and i wonder why i don't see any secondline parades in Baton Rouge or know of any secondline brass bands there. If you have any videos of B.R. secondlines, can you post them? Baton Rouge is only 80 miles from N.O. and i don't see evidence of secondline culture there, maybe i'm wrong.
nola2laca: There Might ? ? be brass bands in Texas, but they don't have the same culture (New Orleans) and spirit to actually get into the secondline "swagga". Houston is BORING. I think Southern should get into some other secondline songs to play(there are many) and let Schools like FAMU and other schools wear out "Do whatcha' wanna" YEAR AFTER YEAR. I think S.U. would do better playing SL music with a more "street parade" sound closer to Rebirth's and cut down on the COLLEGIATE sound.
hey there nbraden93 you wanna bet? florida a&m not only does a great job playing this but they get on espn gameday and show su up on national tv. southern is an excellent band but famu is better in so many ways. lets just throw out all the facts b4 we start talkin bout flava.
Su will always kill famu.fuck famu they think they tight just cuz they can play a few songs better than any other band. And fuck all yall who keep saying Su suck and they weak.
the scream from the trumpets was out of tune and did fit. the tubas fucked the who song up at 1:24. it sounded like shit. FAMU knows how to play this song and did a waayy better job than SU
the lower brass is either too slow or the brass section is either way too fast depending on the arangement they cleaned it up at the end but it felt like they were playing the song as different sections rather than one band in my opinion
And anybody who follows brass bands at all knows what 1:24 is about. At least brass bands in the south. Coincidentally, SU is a college very near New Orleans. Who knew? I love how kats are so close minded. You know you'd hate to go to a black college game if every band sounded the same. You KNOW THIS. I know I would. This WWFD(What Would Famu Do) stuff is nuts. FAMU will do FAMU. SU will do SU. Get a grip.
Amen to this comment from start to finish. I wish people would stop saying either band sucks...apples vs. oranges people! I like both bands, and the differences make both of them more interesting. Like the poster above me said, HBCU bands would be BORING and played out by now if everyone's style was the same.
It was tight,,its just that part when the sousaphones attempted high trumpet notes that threw me off, other than that SU has always been one of my favorites
I like FAMUs better but SU has an alright version (I dont care if they played it first either) I love the screamin though and yes 1:24 does sound bad. Maybe they should focus on that part for a little bit.
I'm sorry to say that Southern Univ. version of "do watcha wanna" sounds like a predominately "White" School (no offense intended) trying to play second-line music. FAMU did a better version in my opinion.
Actually I'd say the same thing about FAMU. I really never heard anything in this arrangement that made it sound like a PWC arrangement. FAMU's arrangement is hot stuff, but their arrangement sounds more like a PWC arrangement if you ask me. It doesn't have the Mardi Gras zing that we have in this arrangement. Not dissing your opinion. You're entitiled to it, but I disagree big time.
I guess you kats don't realize that all this trash talk of the Jukebox just reinforces how much you fear and admire them. It's all psychology folks. You say the band sounds like shit and yet you insist on watching their videos, picking the videos apart to find any little thing to cry about. Why does player A hate on the rims player B has? Because he wants them shits. I'll tell you for free but your local psychiatrist wants $100 an hour. Go fig.
1st of all FAMU..does not play it better than SU..and how do u think FAMU go come out here and play a Louisiana mardi gras song..please get ur facts straight
Most of the time, I do not like FAMU band performances. However, I love to hear them play "Do Whatcha Wanna." Sorry, chauncyman4, but FAMU does play this better.
ok so ?? Chuck Brown is from DC and started GoGo muisc, DC's culture but his trend was spread out from NYC to NC?? gezz SOS band is from dc and all the local schools started playin sos before other areas of the US but there work was nation wide
To nola2laca:I'm from New Orleans and would like to tell my New Orleans brother that there is a band in Mobile, Al. calling themselves "The kings of secondline" on one of their CDs. Their name is the "Bay City Brass Band". They're trying to get the secondline culture started in Mobile by adopting the N.O. style. They and another brass band (Excelsior B.B. Mobile) play at funerals and parades called ''street struts". google their website and youtube.
You gotta be kidding me,a band in MS trying to immitate our style.Like NOLA305 said it has to be in the blood, yeah you can see it done and immitate it but you wont have that same feelin rooted down from our culture.
To kyron14999: Brass bands in other cities trying to play SL music won't have the support of the local people because they don't have the full concept (New Orleans culture) of street parades in the 'hoods of New Orleans. Another thing, you need permission and permits to parade which can be very expensive.
To TomazHilton saying "Do whatcha wanna" is a Gulf Coast is ridiculous! NO PLACE other than New Orleans can claim this song and ANY secondline music. "Do whatcha wanna" is not the only SL song popular in N.O. You have to actually live in N.O. to really know the second line culture. Put your videos where your mouth is by posting secondline parades outside of N.O.!
The tubas didn't mess this up. WTH are you people talking about? I'll admit the trumpets could have been better on the octaves. But the tubas didn't mess up jack. Leave it to FAM? LMAOOOOO. FAMU sounds good on their arrangement and all but FAMU is not SU and SU is not FAMU. And neither is trying to be the other. So I don't get where some of these comments are coming from.
Except for those bad octaves this sounds great...so take a walk with all that.
I CAN WRITE IN CAPS TOO

imagine a Houston kid @ the 2004 MLK BOTB actually said that when St Aug played the song that it was "OLD" n H-town lol.
an AUG/SU grad had to tell the kid that SU got the song from AUG n the early 1990s and then other bands took it from SU.
b cool

nola305-------there are a few brass bands right there n Texas too.
u know real musicians can play any music.
i guess dudes say rather than NOLA BANDS making all the money ,they can start their own and make all the local dates lol
everywhere ive ever been NOLA folks STILL WOULD 2ndLine after parties/dances etc
like u said when its in ur blood we live NOLA CULTURE no matter where we are.
the food,the music etc
b cool

nola2laca: There Might ? ? be brass bands in Texas, but they don't have the same culture (New Orleans) and spirit to actually get into the secondline "swagga". Houston is BORING. I think Southern should get into some other secondline songs to play(there are many) and let Schools like FAMU and other schools wear out "Do whatcha' wanna" YEAR AFTER YEAR. I think S.U. would do better playing SL music with a more "street parade" sound closer to Rebirth's and cut down on the COLLEGIATE sound.
nola305 2 years ago
hey there nbraden93 you wanna bet? florida a&m not only does a great job playing this but they get on espn gameday and show su up on national tv. southern is an excellent band but famu is better in so many ways. lets just throw out all the facts b4 we start talkin bout flava.
bigdan007008 2 years ago
Now this iz how it should sound...caint no band from florida, or anywhere else for that matter, duplicate that original louisana flava!!
nbraden93 2 years ago
Wow the tubas freaked it up at 1:24. They messed the whole song up. lol
Music1592 2 years ago
The tuba part was the best part until the incident at 1:24 but other wise tubas were tight.
jhstiger 2 years ago
Su will always kill famu.fuck famu they think they tight just cuz they can play a few songs better than any other band. And fuck all yall who keep saying Su suck and they weak.
hero129 2 years ago
the scream from the trumpets was out of tune and did fit. the tubas fucked the who song up at 1:24. it sounded like shit. FAMU knows how to play this song and did a waayy better job than SU

the lower brass is either too slow or the brass section is either way too fast depending on the arangement they cleaned it up at the end but it felt like they were playing the song as different sections rather than one band in my opinion
corley989 2 years ago
SU sounds like a bunch of bull shit playin this song!!!!!!!
LLittle43 2 years ago
And anybody who follows brass bands at all knows what 1:24 is about. At least brass bands in the south. Coincidentally, SU is a college very near New Orleans. Who knew? I love how kats are so close minded. You know you'd hate to go to a black college game if every band sounded the same. You KNOW THIS. I know I would. This WWFD(What Would Famu Do) stuff is nuts. FAMU will do FAMU. SU will do SU. Get a grip.
eyeonwashparish 3 years ago 5
Amen to this comment from start to finish. I wish people would stop saying either band sucks...apples vs. oranges people! I like both bands, and the differences make both of them more interesting. Like the poster above me said, HBCU bands would be BORING and played out by now if everyone's style was the same.

Right on tp2005.
eyeonwashparish 2 years ago
It was tight,,its just that part when the sousaphones attempted high trumpet notes that threw me off, other than that SU has always been one of my favorites
deangelo398 3 years ago
I like FAMUs better but SU has an alright version (I dont care if they played it first either) I love the screamin though and yes 1:24 does sound bad. Maybe they should focus on that part for a little bit.
7thSwell 3 years ago
I'm sorry to say that Southern Univ. version of "do watcha wanna" sounds like a predominately "White" School (no offense intended) trying to play second-line music. FAMU did a better version in my opinion.
nola305 3 years ago
Actually I'd say the same thing about FAMU. I really never heard anything in this arrangement that made it sound like a PWC arrangement. FAMU's arrangement is hot stuff, but their arrangement sounds more like a PWC arrangement if you ask me. It doesn't have the Mardi Gras zing that we have in this arrangement. Not dissing your opinion. You're entitiled to it, but I disagree big time.

oh god this freakin sucks o lord they suck

Well I know with SU, I hear 1 piccolo that is flat... sticks out like a rotten tooth.
Basspower04 3 years ago
Sorry FAMU fans, but Southern GOT THIS!! FAMU plays the song way too fast to enjoy it.
ariesbaby21 3 years ago
Speed means nothing if you cant play it with great quality... Famu was louder and cleaner on this song this day

well aktah9 i can tell you are a true 100% pure blood hater.congratulations!
hero129 3 years ago
I guess you kats don't realize that all this trash talk of the Jukebox just reinforces how much you fear and admire them. It's all psychology folks. You say the band sounds like shit and yet you insist on watching their videos, picking the videos apart to find any little thing to cry about. Why does player A hate on the rims player B has? Because he wants them shits. I'll tell you for free but your local psychiatrist wants $100 an hour. Go fig.

1st of all FAMU..does not play it better than SU..and how do u think FAMU go come out here and play a Louisiana mardi gras song..please get ur facts straight
chauncyman4 3 years ago
Most of the time, I do not like FAMU band performances. However, I love to hear them play "Do Whatcha Wanna." Sorry, chauncyman4, but FAMU does play this better.
5022007 3 years ago
Actual Do Whata wanna is a Gulf Coast song.... not just a LA song.
TomazHilton 2 years ago
TomazHilton---get ur mind & info right !!
Rebirth from NOLA wrote and played the song !
NOLA HS bands started playing it.
ST AUG HS MARCHING 100 played it @ a SU HOMECOMING THEN SU ADDED IT TO THEIR PLAYLIST !
ANYBODY CAN PLAY WHAT THEY WANT but listen to the NOLA BANDS VERSIONS which are true to Rebirth's Original..
SU started playing it .then other HBCUs and high schools picked it up.
its a 2nd line song which is New Orleans Culture, NOT THE GULF COAST,nOT BATON ROUGE!!
nola2laca 2 years ago 2
ok so ?? Chuck Brown is from DC and started GoGo muisc, DC's culture but his trend was spread out from NYC to NC?? gezz SOS band is from dc and all the local schools started playin sos before other areas of the US but there work was nation wide
TomazHilton 2 years ago
TomazHilton-- UR FUNNY !!
just admit u DONT KNOW WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT.
They dont have yearly 2nd Lines(Parades) sponsored by Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs n Baton Rouge nor anywhere else on the Gulf Coast !
THATS NOLA CULTURE !
Baton Rouge nor anywhere else n La or on the Gulf Coast has REGULAR FUNERALS w/Brass Bands and Second Lines either !
THATS NOLA CULTURE TOO !
MUSIC IS UNIVERSAL !!
I responded to ur inaccurate claim the NOLA CULTURE IS GULF COAST CULTURE.

Mobile) play at funerals and parades called ''street struts". google their website and youtube.
nola305 2 years ago
hey nola305-
yeah im familiar w/those dudes n Mobile..
1 of my close podnas from Oakland lives n the ATL.
He attended a wedding n Mobile and 1 of the bands did the reception.
There are bands n the Midwest as well across the US & the world that have been inspired by the N.O. Brass Band and Jazz Band Culture.
I remember when the Olympia were requested to play a funeral somewhere n Europe back n the 1980s.
wherever NOLA people go they still bring the 2ndlining with em.
b cool
nola2laca 2 years ago
You gotta be kidding me,a band in MS trying to immitate our style.Like NOLA305 said it has to be in the blood, yeah you can see it done and immitate it but you wont have that same feelin rooted down from our culture.
kyron14999 2 years ago 2
To kyron14999: Brass bands in other cities trying to play SL music won't have the support of the local people because they don't have the full concept (New Orleans culture) of street parades in the 'hoods of New Orleans. Another thing, you need permission and permits to parade which can be very expensive.
nola305 2 years ago
To TomazHilton saying "Do whatcha wanna" is a Gulf Coast is ridiculous! NO PLACE other than New Orleans can claim this song and ANY secondline music. "Do whatcha wanna" is not the only SL song popular in N.O. You have to actually live in N.O. to really know the second line culture. Put your videos where your mouth is by posting secondline parades outside of N.O.!
nola305 2 years ago
This is a interesting version, I kinda like it!!
But yeah the trumpets could have been a cleaner on the higher octaves.
bandjunkie2008 3 years ago
NOT BETTER THAN FAMU
btwquint567 3 years ago 2
The tubas didn't mess this up. WTH are you people talking about? I'll admit the trumpets could have been better on the octaves. But the tubas didn't mess up jack. Leave it to FAM? LMAOOOOO. FAMU sounds good on their arrangement and all but FAMU is not SU and SU is not FAMU. And neither is trying to be the other. So I don't get where some of these comments are coming from.
Except for those bad octaves this sounds great...so take a walk with all that.
eyeonwashparish 3 years ago
Maybe we wern't listening to the same thing b/c at 1:24 that sounded like shit.
