This recording reaches deep in the soul and pulls on you hard to feel the passion of maybe a love lost or the hope and dream of a new love. This to me is Pat Methey's master piece.
It is a monster of a recording that I can never get enough. Cheers Pat!
Each version of this number seems to be different... it always inspires to go on a road trip though! It tugs... it pulls... let's go somewhere! Far! Just like Aretha's Daydreamin'.
Pat is als Paganini, maar dan een duivelskunstenaar op de gitaar. :)
All I have to say is;Pat Meteny is one of the greatest guitarists alive.Period.I have seen and heard him play in every genre since 1982.I have seen him 13 times, from Ornette Coleman to the original Pat Metheny Group with Danny Gottlieb. His brilliance will be appreciated for years to come.
i guess when you are as perfect in every way as metheny is you can just pick a sweater up off the floor, sniff the pits and go headline an orchestral performance! : )
Profound, complex in it's longing,in it's haunting, pulsating drive, with such evocative humanness. Thank You for creating this and to you for posting it here on YouTube for us to find and become possessed.
picture a summer landscape. I'm sure that a man who can compose this, must really have a huge heart. Thank you for what you gave/give us Pat, I know you will never read this but I would really like you to know that your music made me fall in love with you. If I were a woman, you'd surely be the man I wanted to marry, i'm not kidding.
What I feel when listening to this song is really unexplainable with words, and I'm not saying this just to be poetical. I get a mix of emotions, passions, memories, images, feelings, sensations, even fears. I can't really explain this one: I used to be afraid to listen to this song, sometimes I still do, i don't know why, that's surely weird, maybe it is because it makes my brain sink in a sea of emotions, it gets me to memories which don't really exist. The samba feeling somehow makes me
Pat is near robotic in his playing in this solo.............almost inhuman how some one could play so faulessly way yet have such soul and depth of character to the selection of notes and bends, slides.......you name it.............and I always loved the roland synth sound hooked up to that great Ibenez musician series guitar.............
When Pat came on the jazz scene he was a game changer. I marveled at his skill then, and I marvel now. He has had a huge influence on my own playing, and in helping me find my own voice.
i like pat. i like how he started. but i gotta admit, didn't like how he ended this. wish somewhere in the middle of his badass solo his synth sound turned back to guitar. it was killer building up the song but it just overpowered the smooth feel of the song by the end.
I like so much the music of this master of the guitar....specially abuot her sounds.....take me to another world....I know Pat a 25 years ago moreless and then never, ever I forgot his music...always is with me..in my car when I get to the work or in my home........sorry for my english ..I'm from Chile, La serena...a little city on north
i´m in love with music, playing guitar, metheny´s music, and I like the fact that I can see Steve Vai´s song "for the love of god" on the very top of the list of related videos. I don´t know why it´s there. But I like it. Music is beautiful and brings joy to life.
I've listened to Pat's group since college. A professional musician myself, I continue to be moved and inspired by this man's unique perspective on music. I don't know how he, or his player, count or remember so much of the complexity of his arrangements. Watch the DVD: Pat Metheny Group: The Way Up - Live. You will be thrilled by what these guys do!

This is the best piece of instrumental music I ever heard in my life. I've been a Pat fan since I first heard this in the early 1980s......Bless you, Mr. Metheny!
Yes, Tripleps, "god" gifted Pat. Of course She hates many other people. That's why She kills them off in floods, famines, tsunamis, earthquakes, accidents and disease. Tough to figure Her out, huh?
@NoviceOfTheRock yes, the brass section stops for a while, while most of the rest of the orch keeps going. Notice the musicians are really enjoying while trying to make sure they don't lose the count of where they're supposed to reenter! Such is the challenge of a musician--express emotion through the music, but maintain 'just enough' control to be able to play!
I grabbed Offramp from my sister whom I was visiting in Glasgow to listen to in the car while I was driving up thru the Scottish highlands, it was pure magic and meant to be. I'll never forget that day.
@RaymondFRevalee Seriously man, this music means so much to some people. Just because you don't like it does'nt mean you can hurt other people's feelings. NOW GTFO TROLL
I was sitting in the Kanye, Botswana, in 1989, thinking I was a long way from home when a BMW pulled up playing this song. I wasn't as far from home as I'd thought.
I can see all the losers who get offended, popping this tune into their cd players and having some really cheesy sexual episode like a bad soap opera scene of lame 70's porno. "pass me the wine honey cakes lets listen some Metheny and get our grove on, oh please hit floor #3 on the elevator, thanks so much"
There's nothing worse than arrogant self righteous "jazz masters" on the internet, they are as bad as the classical music snobs. Using some "famous" musicians as weapons to justify your own lack of self worth is beyond pathetic.
@RAymondFRevalee lol, HORRID TONE? You're not only saying untrue things, but also you're embarrasing yourself, pratically telling everyone "hello guys, i started playing guitar 2 years ago, jazz sucks"
@Aepotheosis you know nothing about life douche... just because i don't worship Pat Metheny and his horrid dying elephant sounding soloing has absolutely nothing to do with my lifespan or yours retard. Plus there is nothing original about some guy like Metheny ripping on south american music grove, and doing it poorly. There are thousands of musicians that could solo over this better than him and not use the worst sound ever created to do it. It sounds like a torture device.
L'ennesima prova che Pat è un genio: nel passaggio in cui cambia tonalità (5:20) in questo caso aspetta l'orchestra, mentre di solito lo anticipa di almeno due secondi ... fantastico.
@denissymbolic: He's playing his famous Roland synthesizer guitar and shifts it into another mode right at the spot that you've identified. You can see him step on the foot switch right about at 5:30 as you mentioned.
I saw him play back in 1978 or 1979 at North Texas University in Denton, Texas. A somewhat small audience. My husband went back stage and spoke to him and played his guitar. Pretty cool stuff!!
I saw him play back in 1978 or 1979 at North Texas University in Denton, Texas. A somewhat small audience. My husband went back stage and spoke to him and played his guitar. Pretty cool stuff!!
Pat has some pretty impressive fans,including Earl Klugh,Craig Chaquico,BoB James,Brian Hughes,and Paul Hardcastle.....Know thats a Heavy Duty following !
When we think about what heaven is like , this song takes you on a journey that leads us on the path , one step at a time. This is so soothing and very creative. I have admired this song for so many years, thanks Pat Methany for such a beautiful melody.
Orchestration score of original a bit 'rigid' until about 2 MIN 20 SEC with the 1st solo...I love this song anyway and enjoy hearing Pat play it different ways...have any of you compared some of his original recordings (live and recorded) against this? It's a very interesting ... especially when comparing flares like at 5 mni 35 sec.
This song basically sums up why this guy is MY no. 1 musician OF ALL TIME, No other musicain plays with my emotions more than this guy......................ENJOY!! ;-]
I've been seeing Pat perform since the days of Bright Size Life...at Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit...he was sublime then...now he's otherworldly...he's beyond. I saw him during the Orchestrion Tour in May 2010, he used the same guitar, the same tone doing a improvisation...damn it, he blew the building up.
All I can say, is that I've listened to his music since the summer of 1980 when I was first introduced to it, and I've carried it with me all over the world. I never get tired of it, no matter where I am. His music is PURE...

When we think about what heaven is like , this song takes you on a journey that leads us on the path , one step at a time. This is so soothing and very creative. I have admired this song for so many years, thanks Pat Methany for such a beautiful melody.

Great music but is he too commericalized? His music has been in a number of movies.

@USAisAntiWhite Commericalized? Who cares if he is or not. Hard to top this man, pure originality.

Thanks Desweef for posting this! +-)

The whole orchestra doesn't touch me emotionaly as much as the solos do.

@guitarplayer1994 The orchestra adds color...it kicks into another gear @5:20.

@BLUTOV surely it does but they all seem to be quite bored...

All I can say, is that I've listened to his music since the summer of 1980 when I was first introduced to it, and I've carried it with me all over the world. I never get tired of it, no matter where I am. His music is PURE...
