Alan Barnes is a great player and he is doing numbers related to Johnny Hodges, but he is so developed as an individual that when he tries to play Hodges, Barnes bursts through.
Hodges would never have wanted to play those bop licks.
I live in St. Louis, Missouri, USA-- love all those players you mentioned, esp. Cannonball, and Desmond; guess I go with the guys who have the fabulous tone, and Hodges is probably at the top of the list! Listen to "Passion Flower" on Ellington "Blue Rose" album; I need to get Sonny Criss as I have none--any recommendations?
Alan Barnes is as good a saxophonist as we have in the UK. This is an excellent example of his wide-ranging work. He could get a tune out of a drainpipe. More of the Alan Barnes Jazzmasters please.
Sounds just like Alan Barnes to me!

efeutz, where are you?
Try the Swanage Jazz Fest in Dorset in July.
I once saw Alan play a clarinet fixed to a carrot with finger holes.
Not really a Hodges player by nature. A bit too hot, more like Adderley, Parker, Pepper or Sonny Criss. Not really sure why he's on this project?
Good luck anyway.
I've been watching him make great music since his days with Tommy Chase, about 25 years.
He's a fabulous musician.
Peter King won't be around forever, either.
See them now.

Almost anything by Hodges is great playing, I love his legato playing like on 'Sultry sunset' etc.
Check out another great player Charles McPherson. Or another one I've lost track of, Arthur Blythe. Whatever happened to him?
I loved his version of 'Jitterbeg Waltz'.
