It's called a C-Matic transmission. I've had two, on a GS & a CX. Normal 3 speed box but no clutch pedal. The clutch is electro-hydraulically operated as soon as you move the gear lever. A torque converter irons out the jerks.

Really early unadorned ones look great in vivid seventies colours. Best looking for me is late seventies / early eighties Pallas with wheel trims rather than alloys - perhaps in black, silver or grey... Whichever though, they are all pure art!

I agree 100%. This happens a lot with cars. Designers try to improve things by adding plastic scoops, bumps and buldges but then lose the purity of line.

Its hard to belive but the original design was for the BMC Austin 1800 Landcrab replacement.. Yet when British Leyland was created in 1968.. New Chairman the late Donald Stokes.. throw the design out claiming it would be to costly to produce.. so Pinnifarina sold the design to PA Citreon and the rest is history!

Did the CX have a dash with the outline of its body on it?, I remember something around the shape of the car too, Warning lights or whatever. I was maybe 5 years old and I remember a lot about the car, even how it raised up when my mom started the car.

That was the GSA. I think CX Series 2 (with plastic bumpers) has somthing like this too, but what you see here is Series 1 (with metal bumpers) which does not have the shape of the car in the dashboard.

the CX is made in different years and had a lot of engines (diesels and gasoline, turbod and non turbo). The meanest version is the 2.5 litre 4 cylinder GTI Turbo. 240km/h or 150mph.

There is something special about these cars. As I recall each wheel had air/oil independent suspension, and one could change how high it rode of the road by pushing some sort of button. Cool!

Thats is right, its based on a hydropneumatic suspension, wich also includes the steering and braking. Though it wasnt a button but a lever you pull, either to raise it or lower it almost to ground level!

An interesting car the CX (and very comfortable to drive - the back seat of a long wheelbase version is definitely something to behold) - what surprised me with the sedan was the fact that while it had the look of a hatchback, it has a regular boot - another thing was the engines - various different engine designs were under the bonnet (and ALL 4-cylinder)
