Elise/Exige can take corners much faster, much better slalom speed too, this is documented, us lotus guys are not surprised if a mustang can outrun it in a straight line. So you're still surprised that the exige was able to overtake the stang on a turn......It is not just power to weight ratio, gotta look at suspension, weight distribution, grip, center of gravity etc. It takes A LOT to get a stang to handle well.

@gnolhsobners I 1/4 is more of a race than a circuit for a 2 reasons Its over quick ready set go and 1/4 mile later its over which really means less margin for error cause everybody has a fast car puts a lot more pressure on the driver where as a circuit one could just hang in there do some drafting til they come to a spot where they think they have the advantage Its easier to set up no waiting paying for time its between the lights or on the freeway its like basketball where circuit is baseball

I think that its pretty amazing that the ford could stay in front for so long up until the ending were the driver fucked up.
Think about it the lotus is a million times lighter and has a great power to weight ratio and the best handling next to a miata. The ford is a million times heaver and doesn't have great handling or a good power to weight ratio but the ford is cheaper and you could strip the mustang and make it in to a track car and it would kill a lotus and you would still have money left
put some comfy back seats, traction control, a nice stereo system, leather seats and a decent trunk in the lotus, then switch drivers and we'll see who wins. or we can take them to the drag strip and the grocery store

@btman2 There is air-con and a stereo in the Exiges, Evoras and Elises that were made for public use rather than race use. I would much rather get the Lotus but maybe thats because im short so the size of it makes no difference. People who do not know much about sportscars like some of my friends often mistake Lotus's for high end supercars because of their looks and loud shouty engine.

well it's a track car if you want it to be. a guy in my village has one and uses it from day to day.
alot of people don't need cars as big as a mustang. and the roads where i live, the mustang would be very hard and expensive to live with as i live in rural england the roads are barly wide enough to fit a normal sized car down never mind the mustang.

On one or two other races, they might not tell the whole truth (I'm not there during filming, so who knows). But as far as an Exige S beating a Mustang on a track, I have no doubt it would win 90% of the time, unless there's a lot of high speed straights and corners for the mustang to catch up. But to think that the much heavier mustang could match the cornering speed of that lotus is simply very wrong.

I don't like to drive cars with loose suspension, and even just on regular roads I find it more fun taking corners at high speeds versus just accelerating straight line. They are both wonderful cars, so let's stop bashing one or the other. In the mustang's defense, the lotus is more expensive and the mustang is more practical. They are both different cars with different strengths and from different parts of the world; on most American roads the Roush is more than enough (I might think that just because I live in California), in Europe the mustang may be a little big.

really, is this a fair match, firast of all who the hell is driving, the guy in tokyo drift? second the stig has alot of experience drivng the lotus. are you telling me that they didn't put dan in that roushe for the first time when they were filming. Third of all, the lotus exige is pretty much a facotry built cup car, its, as you can tell, doesnt have alot of extremites, like a radio... the ford has got alot more objects to be hauling around, no? The Ford isnt a fair match at this "track"

hahahha really? last time i checked the mustang had the worst ride quality mainly due to shitty suspensions. u can't just put 200 more horsepower and NOT put stronger suspensions. ford said they didn't put the stronger suspensions because they said it'd raise the price too much. well, if u wanna trade shitty ride quality for $3000, be my guest. i'm sorry but mustangs do not compete in any other country other than in the u.s., where ppl care nothing but size.

But to say "this epitomize the problem of all american cars" is just plain ignorant. We've built cars that can easily beat this Lotus around a track. Blame the driver, but one could clearly see the Mustang was having handling issues while the Lotus stayed planted.

I think that its pretty amazing that the ford could stay in front for so long up until the ending were the driver fucked up.
Think about it the lotus is a million times lighter and has a great power to weight ratio and the best handling next to a miata. The ford is a million times heaver and doesn't have great handling or a good power to weight ratio but the ford is cheaper and you could strip the mustang and make it in to a track car and it would kill a lotus and you would still have money left

The Roush is superior to the Lotus. What Clarkson doesn't understand is that in America we have superior civil engineering and our streets aren't all screwed up like they are in the UK. The Roush would eat that little Lotus up on the streets here. Furthermore, you can carry passengers, luggage, and groceries. Oh, and there's that little thing about greater reliability, lower cost of ownership, more comfortable, better stereo, quieter inside, and so much more.

I would much rather get the Lotus but maybe thats because im short so the size of it makes no difference. People who do not know much about sportscars like some of my friends often mistake Lotus's for high end supercars because of their looks and loud shouty engine.

well it's a track car if you want it to be. a guy in my village has one and uses it from day to day.
alot of people don't need cars as big as a mustang. and the roads where i live, the mustang would be very hard and expensive to live with as i live in rural england the roads are barly wide enough to fit a normal sized car down never mind the mustang.

On one or two other races, they might not tell the whole truth (I'm not there during filming, so who knows). But as far as an Exige S beating a Mustang on a track, I have no doubt it would win 90% of the time, unless there's a lot of high speed straights and corners for the mustang to catch up. But to think that the much heavier mustang could match the cornering speed of that lotus is simply very wrong.
