Little known fact about Dr. Marshall. He had to have a special seat installed in his muscle car to accommodate his basketball sized testicles.
Plus, when he presented his findings to the W.H.O. he gave them the middle finger, and lit in on fire. Called everyone a pussy, and went home to bang his wife for 2 days straight.
When I found out about this H. pylori causation of peptic ucleration, I was told that many farmers were aware of their pigs getting the same ulcerations and vets were getting great results with tetracycline and bismuth treatment for a 1-2 wk regimen. They were aware of this nasty 'bug' in the 60s !! No excuse for the medics to keep throwing Pepsid AC and Tagumet at their patients.(drug companies!!) So sad to see such stubbornness continue even into the late 90s with some MDs.
Excellent video thanks for posting! Just goes to show the tenacity of scientists (and bravery) A family member of mine has probs with stomach acid & has been having vitamin B12 shots. He has history of ulcers. Q: is lack of B12 a big factor in ulcer formation?
Egads! That badass has just trashed the etiology championed by Dr. Karol Noymann (John Carradine): "Invisible Invaders"!! How dare he! The "Twelve Angry Men" and the "Animal People" will hear of this!
The really horrid thing was because Doctors believed that no bacteria could survive in the stomach they often did not sterilise the instruments they used to examine the inside of stomachs between patients, thus spreading the bacteria around. Thanks to Dr. Barry Marshall that's stopped now.
I will always be grateful to these two scientists. For years I was taking (non-curing) anodynes and palliatives to alleviate stomach pain caused by ulcers. It was only after their discovery of the true cause (heliobacter pylori) that I received effective medication. Their brain was my boon.
Awesome stuff. Though not quite enough to put me off my morning coffee (yeah, good luck with trying to separate me from my coffee :P), though some of the descriptions nearly made me spray the precious liquid onto my screen.
I hope to bring more of this sort! Glad you enjoyed it even though you chose an inopportune time to watch it (while drinking). I like the lack of disclaimer... i think this video does better catching ppl off guard.
Inopportune time? Hardly, I say. I think the title "Badasses of Science" is a disclaimer on its own, because you know you'll be dealing with something incredibly awesome. Also, what i meant with 'spraying' was the fact that some of your descriptions were hilarious. :P Grossing me out is a near impossibility, considering how desensitised I've become (DAMN YOU INTERNET! RUINING MY INNOCENCE!)
I remember reading/hearing about ulcers a lot when I was younger, like in the 80ies. Now I dont hear it being mentioned more than a few times per year.
Is ulcers "eradicated", do we eat better? Is eating more fat bad or good?
Is ulcers "eradicated", do we eat better? Is eating more fat bad or good?
No, ulcers aren't eradicated. However many people are treating their ulcers with antibiotics with great sucess. It does matter what kinds of foods you eat, as well. I'm not certain that eating fat contributes to ulcer growth/establishment. But eating a high-fat diet is not healthy-- high colesterol, heart disease, and obesity-related illnesses follow from a high-fat diet.
I look forward to more of these "badasses of science" videos.
Seeing this video reminded me of this story: I heard one of the early researchers, Lawrence Patrick, at Wayne State University in Detroit, in the 60's and 70's volunteered to be a test subject for several auto crash tests before test dummies were invented. Some of the videos of him getting smashed in the chest, or sprayed with high-velocity shattered glass are pretty unreal, if you can find those videos. Look him up on Wikipedia.
I was aware of perceptions that stress and acid were the cause of ulcers, and that very few knew that bacteria were the cause. Now I know why that is...and have a healthy respect for this badass of science!
I like it, you should make a TV show out of that ^^
