But I'm sorry to say they missed over a negative this breed does have a series genetic defect if you will. They have a disposition to heart murmurs I know both my dog and my nans dog both had/have it.
I have a black and tan Cav called Kipper, and whilst i absolutely love him to pieces, his health has always been poor. His dad was a crufts champion and there has been so much inbreeding amongst the entire breed that so many are born with hernias, dislocated hips, etc. Mine has a heart mermer, arthritis, epilepsy, and has suffered numerous strokes. Whilst I absolutely love this breed, it's just so cruel that they have ended up like this :(
You all do realize that thier skull is too small for the brain which causes them lots of pain. They scratch the air eith thier back feet because it hurts so much. They were specially bred to have the small skull. Just ridiculous! They also have heart defects which will kill them. I don't understand why anyone would want to breed or have a dog like that. There are plenty of other kind loving souls outthere. Why look for one that was bred with so many problems. I don't get it!
@EquineGall you do realize the brain has no sensory nerves as such, so there is nothing to merit your statement about their brain being 'big' and causing them pain and causing them to scratch. Please do some research before you make a fool of yourself, and check your spelling.
thecavalierclub.co.uk/health/syringo/syringom.html I would ignore the title. There are no "healthy" Cavalier King Charles left due to over breeding. I believe it is a bred that man should just let die out along with pugs and chihuahuas. Sorry no hard feelings I'm sure they have lovely personalities but it's the breed itself that shouldn't be bred.
My King Charles Spaniel Died When i was About 4, He got super Sick and we couldnt treat him and I Miss Him soooo much <3 (His name Was K.C[K.C=King Charles, thats why we named him that])
my cavalier is 7 year old. my friends dog is 6 years old and is so calm. same with my other friend. but my baby is always so active and loving. he follows me everywhere. they will always be young at heart!
I used to own a beautiful tri-color Cavalier named Duke, and I cried for days when we had to sell him after loosing our house to the bank. Now that I'm older and independent, I'm definitely thinking of getting another one. I miss him so much. Wonderful dog. I'd recommend this breed to anyone looking for a super loving and kind dog.
My mother said this is the only dog she would have, but doesn't really want one. She also said my father just won't have a dog. I would kill to have a Tri Colored King Charles Spaniel. (Well any dog). I soooo wish I could have one... :'(
I'm getting two cavaliers very soon! I love them! I've loved them since i was 8 years old but, never had one. So, I'm really happy and excited to get them! Can't wait.
I've had my dog Rosie (White with red markings) since I was five-years old. She's coming up to 12 this year and still going strong. They are the most lovely dogs with so much personality. If you keep them at a healthy weight and give them lots of love they will reward you for as long as they live. Just we warned - it's hard to say "No" to their beautiful faces!
Buy always from a owner that has healthy dogs we bought our youngest king spaniel that is 8 and its still super healthy no heart problems or any other things and the owner that sells king spaniels they have lived up to 13 to 16 years
i think people should stop attacking the breed for the disease.. i own a cav and a chihuahua.. im aware of these illness that my cav will have but then again.. my chihuahua is also prone to other illness..when dogs age... they will eventually have some type of illness and sadly leave us... so do people, we get cancer, heart attack diabetes etc .no one really die of OLDNESS-__- u cant expect ur dog to live with ur forever physically right? it has to pass way with some type of illness eventually

I would never of thought to get a cavalier, my wife had one when we first started dating(I was always a big dog person). now I don't know if i would want any other breed. Mine is so sweet, and it is great to have a dog that is willing to run and play with you, but also wants to cuddle with you. they are fun and sweet all in the same little package. @TheDeacon09 yes he have, but i heard, a rumour that people are going to stop breeding cavaliers because the commoness of heart diseases. My dog was from a healthy family too, but sometimes *hit happends.
@95Neko95 not only because of the heart disease ... i have read this but also because they got some individuals may bone problems, ear, & even something that causes the brain to expand till there is no room for the brain that causes huge pain for the dog and then the dog must be put down & way more problems but what they should do is if possible is to stop breeeding the unhealthy individuals
@95Neko95 king spaniels lifespan is 9 to 12 but if you look at the irish wolfhound their lifespan are 5 to 7 and they are the biggest dogs in the world so i dont see king spaniels that unhealthy compared to other breeds
@EinsteinJunior2011 He is.´My parents are checking on his condition these few weeks and then deside will they take him to doctor and put him asleep or not.
@HeartButerfly thanks. We kinda had no choice since he couldn't breathe...did you watch the video in my channel?? you should watch it if yuo're interested to see what was he like.
My current cav is shy with other dogs but he was a rescue dog and I think that is to do with his upbringing. both he and my last cav sleep in the same basket as my cat (who is a huge macho male cat) and get along fairly well with him.
He was probably secluded from other dogs before you took him on. Dogs need to socialise with other dogs from a very early age. The best thing you go do is take him to the park often and gradually introduce him to other dogs, he'll soon start behaving normally around others.
Just can't keep my hands off my neighbor's cavie, Natasha. She's blenheim and so sweet. She enjoys coming to visit me knowing she'll get a ton of affection and a few crackers to boot! Never barks unlike her cousin Charlotte. the black & white one who barks an awful lot.
@kwixotic How funny! My black & white Cavie is named Charlotte too and she's also a barker:-) I'm trying to do my best to train her out of it, like spraying her with a bottle of water or making a loud noise to distract her from whatever she's barking at.
I got a cavalier that has cocker spaniel in him. He´s 10 years and he is so loyal and loving, every day he sits on a chair in the kitchen looking out the window waiting for my dad to come home from work. The only problem he has is a bad back, some times he´s in pain but it wears of in 1-2 weeks.
My youngest King spaniel that is soon 9 is very active he is still acting like a little puppy he is a healthy kings spaniel we bought him from Sweden and ofc we researched the family of the dog so we dont get a dog with heart problem we had 3 king spaniel but one of them died at summer and our oldest got heart problem to but he will maybe live to 12 years.
We lost our little tri on Saturday morning :( Zoe was 9 1/2, had mitral valve disease, and was on heart medication and fluid pills. Watching this makes me realize how lucky and privileged we were to share all of these years with Zoe.
hi there i commented yous a mnth ago about my two ckcs i have got some news for you sadly my little girl abby abs passed away on me last mnth sun oct 3rd she went into heart failure tok fits etc vet nurses sayd that her heart couldnt go on any more she was onli ten abby was a cavalier king charles spaniel she was black and tan i onli have got malfoy left now hes onli six hes a tricolour male we both miss our little girl abby abs
My service dog was just killed and my vet recommends the Cavalier King Charles, but I am afraid of losing him or her at such a young age and to have them suffer from so many health problems. Advice?
Just over a week ago now, we lost Georgia our blenheim cavelier. I miss her so much. She went to bed on Fri 22nd fine, a bit yappy not settling down, got woken up by sis at 6am sat, and smelt bad diarrhoea, and hoped she just had food poisoning while she was at vet....mum came home said she had to be put down.
She was found really lethargic, tongue hanging out and not wagging. She was in heart failure. The vets couldve done heaps of tests but she'd have died that day either way.
A wonderful breed but with serious health issues. They are indoor dogs, and want their owner in sight at all times. If people DON'T want a velcro dog, this is the wrong choice! :) On health issues: these are sadly quite serious. Half have heart murmurs by age 5 & up to 70%, go on to develop the often very painful neurological condition syringomyelia. :(
ideal height ideal weight great show quality since when did dogs become man's bitch (no pun intended) seriously dogs need to live they can't be caged then shown around a ring for hours on end
hi everyone i have got two cavalier king charles spaniels called abby and malfoy they are the onli two furbabies i have abby is black and tan and malfoy is a tricolour i love them both so much
Very lucky with my cavalier. 11 years old and apart from a growth on his spleen 2 years ago he has had none of common cavalier health problems whatsoever, and still gets mistaken for being no older than 6-7. Amazing considering the growth was most likely cancerous.
Still think hes 1/2 or 1/4 some other dog. Hes a bit taller than the average and really broad, not overweight though, his head isn't totally flat between the ears and he has longer hair on top. Incredibly protective not just loyal.
I have a Cav, she's named Coco and 6 years old. I sure think these are the best dogs ever because they are so friendly and the worst thing they could do is lick someone to death xD Sometimes my dog waggs her tail so hard I think it'll break off xD <3
We've had two cavalier king charles spaniels and they are amazing dogs. However, they are plagued with health problems. Many develop heart and eye problems, and something like 70% have Syringomyelia (google it) to varying degrees.
One of mine has to be put down last year because it had Syringomyelia and Cushings disease. My other one (her son) also has Syringomyelia quite badly and we don't think he'll survive for much longer.
@Zildjian285 I feel so sorry for you!I dn`t hope that your dog will have pains before he is going.
.My first dog,Pascoe, was a Cavalier King Charles spaniel.Unfortunality he got heartfailure at the age of 5 ad died when he was 7.Even I now have another dog who now is 10 years,I still miss him so much!I love my other dog just as well, butr now she has got cancer, and I will probably have too put her too sleep within some few months.I am NOT looking forward to that.....It is going to be so hard!
@Zildjian285 I LOVE THESE DOGS, but I can totally relate with the health issues. All three of my cavaliers (2 boys and a girl) were on heavy heart meds and had syringomyelia by the time they were 7. SEVEN! Our girl passed away last week and with these dogs, it's way harder to handle than just losing any old pet. We lost a part of our family.
@Zildjian285 did you get the dogs from a shelter or breeder, if shelter, more likely cos you dunno the parents background, so to everyone who wants a CKCS at puppies, pls from a breeder, if adult or senior, SPCA work better....
Syringomyelia is a generic disorder, it has absolutely nothing to do with the dogs lifestyle or diet. For your information my dog(s) are/were always fed on real whole food (fish, chicken, etc) and my CKCS is walked three times a day. I had a German Shepherd before this breed which lived to 15. Regardless, most animals and indeed humans get health problems from time to time, it is natural. My point is that this particular breed suffer more than most, unfortunately.
i own a cavalier mix and hearing about all the health problems this breed is prone to rips into me :( she's the sweetest thing that ever entered my life and i bet losing yours in such a painful way was awful... my heart goes out to you
i'm gonna have two of these one day!! :D

hi
i have an american cocker spaniel and he has the unusual habbit of smashing his head to the ground and than shuffle around as a vacuum cleaner
can someone explain me this? i first thougt that there was something wrong with his ears, but no, they're clean ...
it's actually very funny to watch but i don't think it is so healthy for him, he often scratch his nose open on a stone and he also broke a tooth
tips are welcome!

Crufts is a bad thing!
This nonsense is causing all the disease within the breed such as Cancer- hartdisease-epillepsy,etc.
Stupid people who are slowly murdering the breed to death, the motivation of all this criminal behavior is,..MONEY!!!
People think, you are the ones buying those puppie who are inbred!
You are the one suffering great loss of love & money.

@TheDeacon09 yes he have, but i heard, a rumour that people are going to stop breeding cavaliers because the commoness of heart diseases. My dog was from a healthy family too, but sometimes *hit happends.
95Neko95 7 months ago
@95Neko95 not only because of the heart disease ... i have read this but also because they got some individuals may bone problems, ear, & even something that causes the brain to expand till there is no room for the brain that causes huge pain for the dog and then the dog must be put down & way more problems but what they should do is if possible is to stop breeeding the unhealthy individuals
TheDeacon09 7 months ago
@95Neko95 king spaniels lifespan is 9 to 12 but if you look at the irish wolfhound their lifespan are 5 to 7 and they are the biggest dogs in the world so i dont see king spaniels that unhealthy compared to other breeds

My current cav is shy with other dogs but he was a rescue dog and I think that is to do with his upbringing. both he and my last cav sleep in the same basket as my cat (who is a huge macho male cat) and get along fairly well with him.
charmedgirl90 1 year ago
@charmedgirl90

Never barks unlike her cousin Charlotte. the black & white one who barks an awful lot.
kwixotic 1 year ago
@kwixotic How funny! My black & white Cavie is named Charlotte too and she's also a barker:-) I'm trying to do my best to train her out of it, like spraying her with a bottle of water or making a loud noise to distract her from whatever she's barking at.

I got a cavalier that has cocker spaniel in him. He´s 10 years and he is so loyal and loving, every day he sits on a chair in the kitchen looking out the window waiting for my dad to come home from work. The only problem he has is a bad back, some times he´s in pain but it wears of in 1-2 weeks.

We lost our little tri on Saturday morning :( Zoe was 9 1/2, had mitral valve disease, and was on heart medication and fluid pills. Watching this makes me realize how lucky and privileged we were to share all of these years with Zoe.

My service dog was just killed and my vet recommends the Cavalier King Charles, but I am afraid of losing him or her at such a young age and to have them suffer from so many health problems. Advice?
Rossdhu16 1 year ago
Just over a week ago now, we lost Georgia our blenheim cavelier. I miss her so much. She went to bed on Fri 22nd fine, a bit yappy not settling down, got woken up by sis at 6am sat, and smelt bad diarrhoea, and hoped she just had food poisoning while she was at vet....mum came home said she had to be put down.
She was found really lethargic, tongue hanging out and not wagging. She was in heart failure. The vets couldve done heaps of tests but she'd have died that day either way.

amberevax 1 year ago
A wonderful breed but with serious health issues. They are indoor dogs, and want their owner in sight at all times. If people DON'T want a velcro dog, this is the wrong choice! :) On health issues: these are sadly quite serious. Half have heart murmurs by age 5 & up to 70%, go on to develop the often very painful neurological condition syringomyelia. :(

It's such a shame because they don't deserve it.

Hans021220 1 year ago
@Zildjian285 I LOVE THESE DOGS, but I can totally relate with the health issues. All three of my cavaliers (2 boys and a girl) were on heavy heart meds and had syringomyelia by the time they were 7. SEVEN! Our girl passed away last week and with these dogs, it's way harder to handle than just losing any old pet. We lost a part of our family.
Stamm32089 1 year ago
@Zildjian285 I know. Its because of the inbreeding the many breeders do esp in the UK. Watch PBS special on pure breeds.

@Zildjian285 Did you get it from a breeder?
God11Like 1 year ago
@Zildjian285 did you get the dogs from a shelter or breeder, if shelter, more likely cos you dunno the parents background, so to everyone who wants a CKCS at puppies, pls from a breeder, if adult or senior, SPCA work better....
brocolims 1 year ago
@Zildjian285 no thats not natural for a dog to just get health problems. what were you feeding them?????????????????
bigBrude41 1 year ago
@bigBrude41
Zildjian285 1 year ago
@Zildjian285
i own a cavalier mix and hearing about all the health problems this breed is prone to rips into me :( she's the sweetest thing that ever entered my life and i bet losing yours in such a painful way was awful... my heart goes out to you
