Sikh leadership is hollow from inside. We need radical change in the way we our gurdwaras and sikh institutions are managed.

You have wrong information which seems to be sourced from "Jus TV" a player in this whole drama to defame Prof Darshan Singh. Regarding the term "Prof", veerey there is no universal criteria which you need to meet to be called "Prof". Our missionary colleges (Gurmat Gian m c, Sikh m c, Shaheed Sikh m c, etc.) give their teachers the title of Prof. Check with them if you have any objection to this practice. Also SGPC called Sirdar Kapur Singh "Professor of Sikhism".

1. "Panj piarey" -- in our history there have never been a "permanent" panj piarey. Guru Gobind Singh sent a council of five with Baba Banda Singh. Baba Binod Singh had a disagreement with Baba Banda Singh on strategy at Gurdas Nangal and parted ways. Later the same Baba Binod Singh played a crucial role in keeping the Panth in charhdi kala.

1...continued...Then there was a time of huge numbers of jathas, which were consolidated under Tarna Dal and Buddha Dal. Further consolidation occurred in the shape of 12 misslan. During all this time, Panj Piarey were chosen at the gathering of Sarbat Khalsa. Anyone could object publicly to a person becoming a "Piara" and the objectee had to explain to sangat whether there was any basis for objector's objection. It was the most democratic justice system.

2. Panj Takht -- till early 20th century there was only one Takht, Akal Takht. When SGPC Act of 1925 restricted SGPC to control Gurdwaras of Punjab and Delhi, Sikhs established Hazur Sahib and Patna Sahib as control centres outside SGPC, to control all Gurdwaras in India. Takht Damdama Sahib is not even fifty years old.

3. Consultation has been a very important part of the Sikh decision making processes -- till dictatorial persons started taking control of our power centres. Consider why Panth spent 13 years debating and discussing the Rehat Maryada before finalizing it. Why didn't the Panj Piaras simply issue an edict saying "From now on, everyone shall follow this Rehat Maryada" ? Role of Panj Piaras is to guide discussion within the Panth -- not dictate.

4. You are wrong again on "spashtikaran". Do you think presenting one's explanation to Guru Granth Sahib is somehow wrong?? Wasn't at issue this -- who do we explain our conduct to, the Guru or the Panj Piarey? You quote wrongly the direction of the Guru. The correct one is -- "Atma Granth vich, shareer Panth vich". Democratically selected Panj Piarey would still be nothing if they sit away from the soul, Guru Granth Sahib. Without soul, shareer is dead... ...

... ...Prof Darshan Singh asked for a chance to present his case in front of the Guru -- and Guru today is Guru Granth Sahib+Sangat(Panth). Sahi Panj Piarey would have conducted the proceedings and formed the decision in the light of Gurmat teachings. When the Jathedars said they want to hear the Prof. away from the sangat, away from Guru Granth Sahib -- they tried to usurp the rights of sangat as well as Guru Granth Sahib. Which was gross disrespect of Guru's Hukam.

5. Prof. Darshan Singh chose to present his explanation, the written form, to Guru Granth Sahib. He would have read it out if the Jathedars had been present. He could have read it to the sangat -- but the ongoing service at the Takht precluded his doing so. So he presented his explanation to Guru Granth Sahib for the purpose of sharing with the Panth and arriving at a decision. The Jathedars, however, chose to consult no one -- neither the Guru, nor the Panth.

6. Jathedars have shown grave disrespect to Guru Granth and Guru Panth. Their refusal to read Prof.'s written explanation is akin to one refusing "parshad" from a member of the Sangat, on the pretext that Parshad wasn't given to the granthi but put in front of Guru Granth Sahib.

In this case, the "granthi" wasn't even sitting in Guru Granth Sahib's presence but wanted the "parshad" to be given to him in the room he was sitting in.

When you go to the court you are asked to put your case forward in front of the jury not to an individual/s in the back office unless both parties wish to agree to a compromise. If the five jathedars had any understanding of the dasam granth or belived there was any truth in it, they would have come to the Akal Takhat in the congregation and challenged prof. Darshan Singh. Obviously they went against the traditions of shri akal takht sahib and sikh ethics to anounce GUILTY WITHOUT TRIAL.

If I am not mistaken, When Prof Darshan Singh was Jathedar of Akal Takhat himself, he called public hearing in Barnala Case at Akal Takhat. He was brave enough to summon Chief Minister of Punjab to appear at Akal Takhat.

But Jathedars these days are scared enough not to come out of thier closed doors in Sangat.
