@ZEGO24x dude, seriously. All he is doing is wanking. You want to really see some emotion, check out jeff loomis' solo album. that album changed the way i play guitar.
@breadfan87 - You gotta be kidding me! I'm a Loomis fan too, but this guy far surpasses the type of playing Loomis does as far as emotional playing goes...
@breadfan87 You must be joking...This guy is a jazzer, and when it comes to improvising everyone knows Jazz/fusion guys always dominate... Loomis can shred like a monster but he lacks that "Vocal" sound that guthrie and alex have.
His facial expressions are exactly what Jack Black parodies. It's hilarious! He is a phenomenal player, and probably gets a great deal of satisfaction from playing, so why not bust out the funk face?
Alex is great playing against a backtrack. Nobody doubts it. But how good is he within a LIVE BAND context? I don't mean no disrespect but THAT is the test!
@arcainjust tks, man. I've seen some of his vids here on YouTube. Unfortunately they don't pay justice to what he does in trackings like this one here.
idk why it's making me laugh XD liek if it was hilarous joke ... cause it looks so eays .. .i attempt to do it by ears and watching his fingers ... and it's hella hard XD
@devilzdj4 He's mainly using C dorian (Bb Major) over the first chord, which is a Cminor, and then he's using an Ab mixolydian (Db Major) over the second chord, which is an Ab7. But he's playing lots of altered stuff as well, like adding a #11 on the Ab dominant and playing lots of chromatic notes. This kind of playing can't be learned by just learning a new scale, it takes a lot of work. Hope this helps. You should also check out my video of me playing a solo over this.
It takes one to know one.And there are more Guthries than Alexs on this planet. And thats why, ladies n gentlemen, Alex aint as famous as Guthrie.. although I must say he is fucking legend in the making.
Alex, I hope your rich....you may be the best sorta unkown guitarist on the planet.. I put you up there with Satch, Vai, Timmons... maybe even above those guys a little...
Great player. 1:15 is the shiznit. The fast stuff just sounds to me like "b-d-b-d-b-d-b-d-b-d-b-d-b" - like someone making motorboat sound with his mouth. I guess it's cool that he has the chops to play this kind of music - nice to be ready for anything... Check out his other videos - he is a phenomenal musician.
@Barefoot67 They both are amazing top-class players, but some might prefer one over the other, of course, it's a matter of taste. But to say AH is "a zillion times" more interesting than GG is a bit far-fetched, I think, then you must really hate GG for some reason..?
@Barefoot67 Ok, but please watch the "Guthrie Govan & Alex Hutchings Improvised jam!" video (if you haven't already) If you just listen without seeing who plays what, I think you would have a hard time saying that one is much better than the other.. ;-)
Frank Gambale has said in an article that he's a huge fan of Alex's playing, so i think if gambale likes his sweeps they must be pretty fucking good. Peace.
I didn't know that, but I'm NOT AT ALL SURPRISED! Gambale sure knows about talent and work-ethic!
Alex rips! (...and I mean he rips intelligently with great feel and passion as well!!!)
I did read that if Gambale could start over (with learning how to play guitar of course,) he would START-OUT using "Fourths-Tuning" (just like Alex Hutchings.....and my friend Tom Quayle from the UK, who is AWESOME too!)
Actually, what I should've said is NO, it is the OPPOSITE of violin tuning! Think of it like this: A 4-string electric-bass is:
E4 A3 D2 G1
So violin is like an "upside-down" bass guitar! So the guitar's "fourths-tuning" which Hutchings and Quayle use, is the OPPOSITE of traditional violin-tuning, OK?
I think "TONE" and "PHRASING" both (in general) are a bit subjective and therefore impossible to quantify. However, I think there's a limit to "how clean" ANYONE can play, and I think Alex AND Guthrie are at the "MASTER's LIMIT" of "Cleanliness" and "Articulation" which I think are both byproducts of PEFECTLY SYNCHRONIZED RIGHT & LEFT HANDS!

@billmeedog Excellent point. However, as far as cleanliness is concerned, my friend Allan Holdsworth would certainly qualify as one of the all time masters of clean execution that the known universe has produced thus far.

billmeedog 2 years ago
u mean that Alex here is using a Fourths-Tuning? like a cello or a violin?
and, if so, what range of notes does it cover?
Ravenhunt 2 years ago
I know for a fact that Alex Hutchings and Tom Quayle use perfect-fourths
(Low-Pitch-to-High-Pitch) tuning which corresponds to the following:
E6 A5 D4 G3 C2 F1
I'm pretty sure that violin is tuned to perfect-5th's "low-pitch-to-high-pitch?" Like: G4 D3 A2 E1
Perhaps when you said "4ths-tuning like violin" you meant perfect-fourths going from high-pitched (E1) to low-pitched
(G4)? If so, you are correct! (...since 4ths & 5ths are inversions of one another!)
billmeedog 2 years ago 2
yeah, that's what i meant, you got it...
So, it's like a 6 strings bass, without the Low B and with a high F...
It's really usefull, avoid the "semitone change" on the scale pattern when you hit the, old, High B, wich now is a C....thx for clearin! ;)
Ravenhunt 2 years ago 2
