The "Ace" was staged crooked. It can be clearly seen. Probably one of the best nitro drivers ever but even he can make a mistake. And YES they were nitro, and had around 3500 hp at that time.

Actually having a wall would be quite "stupid". At least there is a chance to "lift" before impact. Two car accidents in drag racing are rare. we would see much more carnage with a car ping ponging between two concrete walls. We may be better off w/43 walls between Sprint cup cars, where these accidents are EXTREMELY common. YIKES!!!!

These were indeed nitro funny cars. The volume of fuel burned in 1984 wasn't near as much as today, therefore "header flames" in the daytime aren't as visible.
