@WeedingWaimbow .xinitrc and rc.local can do both of those. rc.local starts after the daemons and kernel modules have been loaded, while .xinitrc starts when you run startx, or if you use a login manager (e.g. gdm kdm slim), the login starts directly from .xinitrc, assuming you want to run startx
@sierinjsh The title says Arch Linux, and I would rather have an ok boot time and an incredibly fast system than a fast boot time and a sluggish system. Greatness takes time.
Man, get a decent monitor, they are dirt cheap now :)
I got X243HQ (24" fullhd) from Acer, for around 170$. Its really worth it, it would drastically expand your working space. Compiz @ 1920 is really worth seeing!
So, you are informed and can get it too. They save up desk space, I had 19" LG F900P before, its very good monitor, 1280x1024, but its weight(20kg) and power consumtion(120W) are not very shiny. Thing that I mentioned before eats 35w, 2kg, fullhd, dvi, sharp geometry. Its just worth the money. (Still want them to be 100$ or lower hehe)
If my computer were as good as yours I would put Linux, but my computer can only handle Windows 98. My processor does not have enough megabytes or something.

I am not switching to outdated tech from the 70s (that is when Linux was made). I will stick with with 98. It is 30 years newer and needs less memory. Win-win! How did MS fit so much awesome in there?
Go use Windows 98 then! :) Good luck with an unsupported system and have fun conquering those viruses and Trojans as soon as you get online. LOL@more features too.. wow, guess I shouldn't feed the trolls. I have to break that habit.
I used an old laptop for over one and a half year - Pentium I 233mhz, 48mb, \wo CD. It came \w in98 preinstalled, since I'm kinda lazy I tried to use it: No useable Software anymore (anything new requires win NT), a lot of crashes and whats worst: no unix shell environment (Cygwin can't replace it). Finally the OS died after three weeks - the registry got lost overnight. I nuked the HD and installed Gentoo (with a little help from my PC) - THAT rendered this brick really useful!
If you disable this kernel status message stuff, itll boot about 0.5 sec faster (and yes, 0.5 sec are important if your whole booting process takes only about 15 seconds)
add "quiet" (sans quotes) to your kernel line in the GRUB menu.lst

you can boot arch super fast if you disable all of the daemons xD
itsbrad212 2 years ago
@itsbrad212 you need alot of them!

@WeedingWaimbow Not many. You can *boot* without any of them. I just have hal, alsa, and slim :D
itsbrad212 2 years ago
@itsbrad212 I know you need those but make a script when you startx that it starts all your daemons like mpd and stuff..

1. I'm not using windows.
2. Arch Linux rocks.
3. I know how boot time's counted.

Also icons suck(if i see correctly then KDE sucks.)

Use Arch with XFCE or *box environiments. Would give 50-90 Mb total RAM requirement(without swap, you can swap this too).

All the more reason to use Linux.

DSL can easily handle a windows 98 comp.
It's quite nice, I use it for reviving boxes, and getting data off of the hard drives of old PC's that don't turn on (BSOD hardware failures ect.)
There are people I know that use DSL as their main OS, and that's what it was mainly built for, a full desktop OS optimized for low spec computers. :)
