It must be remembered thet Tom Fischer has always been an experimentalist thoughout his career. During Celtic Frosts hiatus, he formed Apollyon Sun which is a shift into industrial music with its samples and breakbeats. I think AP was some of his strongest sounding material. Monothiest, as good as it is, was just an excersice to appease the fans baying for a return of their "Reign In Blood" moment. Now lets lay Celtic Frost to rest as the band have and look forward to the debut from Tryptikon.

Absolutely a few steps up from Cold Lake. However, I still maintain that the Cold Lake songs Petty Obsession, (Once) They Were Eagles - HEY!, Juices Like Wine and Roses Without Thorns were all actually decent songs.
For those songs, if they just beefed up the distortion, get rid of the Van Halen licks, and remove Tom's "old woman constipated" singing style, then those songs would have been awesome.
As far as V/M, heavier but some songs still suffered from that certain vocal style.

I've just gotten into these guys to be honest, and it's this kind of shit that made me like them. I don't have a ton of their albums yet, but from everything I hear Cold Lake is a musical abortion. Should I steer clear of it entirely or try it at the risk of losing respect for them ?
Cold Lake was different... it was not as brutal nor Black Metal, but it was bold, and ground breaking, Influenced new styles in Metal with Sampeling and industrial in bands like Godflesh,Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Nailbomb, Ministry, Etc. I think cold Lake and Into The Pandamonium were well made and still are a great listen.
Does anybody know who plays the guitar solos in this song? Warrior himself has admitted he can't solo, and this is very different from his typical chromatic tapping...

There were plenty of great metal bands from the us such as Vio-Lence, Forbidden, Testament, Exodus and many others. Pantera? I won't go there - Pantera are 2nd generation to all the above and CF as well.
I've been listening to Celtic Frost from the very beginning, and out of all their releases - this one is still my favorite one. They actually got a good mix on the CD, and the songwriting was far superior to their earlier material - sure it was less brutal, but I always loved the fact that they were willing to constantly expand and try new things. If people liked it great, if they didn't - I don't think CF actually gave a shit. LOL
The recording is better than the earlier stuff but what's with the teased hair? Sounds way too forced. I liked them better when they were a three piece band. More raw. The voice was way more guttural. It's still alright just not as "authentic".

Vanity/Nemesis was an improvement over Cold Lake, sure, but it's still not that great. The band desperately needed to rehabilitate their image and I don't know why they thought a lame Megadeth impersonation would do it.

Just to clarify, I think Tom G Warrior's vocals were awesome on the classics: MT, TMT, ITP and now Monotheist.
I was refering to the vocal style he adopted for CL, V/M and the new songs on PWTAIAD.
That whiny, high pitched shrill was annoying as hell and one of the short commings of the whole 88 - 92 era.
Monotheist is a complete return to what CF really is in my mind. I almost pretend that it came out right after ITP.

Definitely an abortion of a comment. Obviously you're too dumb to know CF are from Switzerland and not the states anyway. Don't hate on them for being experimental with Vanity/Nemesis and V/M sure beats Cold Lake to shit.
There were plenty of great metal bands from the us such as Vio-Lence, Forbidden, Testament, Exodus and many others. Pantera? I won't go there - Pantera are 2nd generation to all the above and CF as well.

I've been listening to Celtic Frost from the very beginning, and out of all their releases - this one is still my favorite one. They actually got a good mix on the CD, and the songwriting was far superior to their earlier material - sure it was less brutal, but I always loved the fact that they were willing to constantly expand and try new things. If people liked it great, if they didn't - I don't think CF actually gave a shit. LOL

The recording is better than the earlier stuff but what's with the teased hair? Sounds way too forced. I liked them better when they were a three piece band. More raw. The voice was way more guttural. It's still alright just not as "authentic".

Vanity/Nemesis was an improvement over Cold Lake, sure, but it's still not that great. The band desperately needed to rehabilitate their image and I don't know why they thought a lame Megadeth impersonation would do it.

I still love this song. There where a bunch of good songs on Vanity/Nemesis.
I just heard today on XM Radio that former Celtic Frost guitar player Curt Victor Bryant has a new band that supposedly seriously kicks ass. I can't wait.

YES!! Vanity Nemis was aweird time.... they they had the hair metal look and somee songs in that era were well.... not good but vanity nemisis surprised me with some INTERESTING work... maybe not in the vain of their earlier period.. but unique. and good.

Any rabid fan should at least get Tom's book Are You Morbid?, but the Cold Lake album/period was as Tom puts it; a break from getting too serious. They wanted to embrace a funner aspect of rock music. With Vanity/Nemesis they did long time fans proud, they knew Cold Lake was universally panned. Tom says it is part of their history though, good or bad, they have to accept it.... As we do
