I recently heard interview with Bettye over NPR. I learned that she both wrote and originally recorded this song. She got little air time because the song was thought to be too sexual and immodest. She believes this to be a prime example of racial bias within the music industry, for when Bobbie Gentry recorded her song, it became a minor hit. Thanks to Ms. Gentry for popularizing an otherwise obscure and little-known tune, but with most gratitude going to the original artist, Ms. Lavette.
This is one fabulous recording, but have you heard the version from the Crossroads soundtrack? Maybe you have some info on the singer(s) from that track? Thanks for posting this!

When I used to name Bettye Lavette as one of my favorite singers, people would say, who?

Tina sounds just like Bettye. I've been lucky to see her live.

Bobbie Gentry did a version of this song too, don't know if she was first. This woman sounds just like Tina Turner.

@1timysand Bettye Lavette was first.

@1timysand My first thought was Etta James. All three have that early 1960s 'club vibe'.

I remember the Bobbie Gentry version which charted pop in 1969. This is a great cover too.

I read somewhere that this version might be the original one. I'm not sure though. I think this version also came out in 1969
