The 'cardboard' thing was an applicator, desigbed by men so that women would not have to touch their own vaginas.

Thankfully they are rarely seen now, as women are very comfortable with their own vaginas :)

Nothing wrong with that, though if you are using tampons, it's probably not your 'small hymen' that causes you difficulty, but healthy - though resistant - vaginal muscles, especially at 'the beginning'. A women's health clinic, or a nurse with an interest in women's health, could explain this in detail. No need for a gynaecologist, because this is not abnormal, very common in young women.

Being 19 years of age is getting to be just outside of the 'normal range' for menarche (your first menstrual period). A lot about when you start is genetic, ask your mother and grandmothers if that is possible, or you may want to go to a women's health centre.
