I was just born when Entertainment Tonight came on the air. I became an avid watcher when I was in high school but I do remember being 10 years when John Tesh was on there. What happened to the music career John? You should have stayed on ET.
I've heard that it was PDI that made this "ET" opening, and if it was, they did a darn good job of it, from the way the camera went between the "A" in "Entertainment" and the "I" in "Tonight," to the way that the title turned into place against a gray steel grate, which then faded out and gave way to a shot of the studio from the outside looking in (and may I say, the studio then looked awfully impressive, not like today's; I don't look at "ET" much these days anyway). I loved the music too.
I have my own TV taped archive, like radio clips I plan to host, I just taped them and kept them for personal artifacts. It's fun to haul these out and display to the World though!!
If they did that TV survey now, boy howdy!

Back when they really covered film and television. Now all they do is celebrity gossip.

@HectorJW2007 Well CBS changed ET's format to battle E!. You HAVE to be USED TO IT.

Does anyone know when in 1983 they switched to this opening?

Most likely in September or October. That's when premieres are.

Closing credits snippet appears to be What's Happenin'? With ReRun character everyone recalls from that show
