ALMA GLUCK (May 11, 1884 – October 27, 1938) was a Romanian-born American soprano, one of the world's most famous female singers at the peak of her career (circa 1910).
The quality of this acoustic recording is almost beyond belief. Judging by the last few bars she must have had either perfect absolute pitch or an awful lot of self-confidence!
Hello KozenaFan: Yes, indeed! There's also a recently published biography of her husband, violinist Efrem Zimbalist, by Roy Mala, a student at Curtis Institute when Zimbalist was active there. Some very touching moments on Alma Gluck Not too long ago Efrem, Jr., published his autobiography, "My Dinner of Herbs." Tnx & Rgds. Doug --.
Alma Gluck is one my favorite singers of any time. There few videos of her uploaded in youtube. I have uploaded several, which I invite to watch. She was a great soprano.
After all these years, I still recall and love this performance, sung with such charm and vivacity. Whether it be an aria by Handel or Rameau, or a song by Arne or Foster, Gluck never disappoints. She is surely one of the greatest lyric sopranos on record. Her teacher, Sembrich, also made a fine recording of the song.
Clear diction and a smile in the voice. A fearless attack and a security of placement. One doesn't anticipate the high note in her voice. It just appears. A delightfully sung version of a lovely song. One imagines her taking a slower tempo outside of the recording studio. Thanks Doug.

A few more aspirates than I would have expected, but the voice and manner are adorable. Who could POSSIBLY sing like this today?
