@Squiddy200 Labyrinth was AWESOME! if it wasnt for Bowie the movie would have sucked! they say they were originally going to get Michael Jackson to play Jered.. there is nothing sexy or intimidating about MJ.. but BOWIE, YAY!
this is so strange. I just watched la jetee the other day and today i just felt the urge to listen to this song. did any one else notice the reference to that short film in this video?
The song is actually inspired by the death of Bowie's half brother. He died some 7/8 years before this song. I love the song and video so much. Black \tie White Noise is very underated album
Is is sick that I love this song and video? It was inspired by a tragic incident for D.B. I'm sorry for his loss. But way to make a great song about a horrible incident in his life. Rock it, Bowie!
@brianab31 I cannot remember the name of it right now, but he has at least one other excellent song that was based on the tragedy with his brother. Great music often stems from intense emotions. It's a great way to get it out and he wanted to express it, so don't feel bad about it. DB approves. :)
@brianab31 Wasn't it about his brother committing suicide? This song is my absolute favorite for a lot of reasons. It's crazy how he turned that tragedy into such an amazing song.
before neo from the matrix, before teddy daniels from shitter island, before whoever from inception, or even before Trent Reznor from down in it, there goes bowie's brother off to no man's land as a result to psychosis (well specifically like schizophrenia i think) interpreted none other than bowie himself. Jmoulx, this song is also suppose to be about being pushed by other people into doing something for which you are not ready, a leap into the dark unknown. At some point in your life, it's quite probable that someone will try to take over it. They haven't lived your life so they really are ignorant.
Freedom means getting to make your own decisions. Even if they turn out badly, at least you are the one who made them.
Remember Lou Reed's quote, "My week beats your year.." When it was time to hang it up he knew it so how can you blame him. You would only be disappointed to see him as a shadow of his former self, former glory, trying to hit high notes and unsteady hands holding the mike. Better to leave them wanting than wanting you to leave.....
@panther105 Your comment has made me think about Bowie differently... I never imagined him as you described 'unsteady hands holding the mike', hes always seem so youthful. Its painful to imagine him that way, but to actually see him like that would be horrible.
But I would never want Bowie to leave. Even if he couldn't hit high notes.
"Got to believe somebody...." Somebody else it seems if Bowie never returns. It's like that hushed silence at the end of show when everyone have been clapping and cheering after the band leaves the stage and then after a while nothing happens and everyone is like.""Wtf dude, no encore?!" That's right peeps......David has left the building.
So much time has passed and I'm still discovering new stuff (to me, I mean). Always loved his Thin White Duke persona. No one looks as good in a suit as Bowie. Thank you for posting this

The album Black Tie White Noise from which this song came is a fantastic deep funk album way ahead of its time. Digital distortion of his sax to sound like a guitar and a guitar sounding like a sax is just amazing which you can here on many of the tracks. I believe a part of the reason why it was a commercial failure is how the single black tie white noise was about the LA riots from the stand point of the African american people doing it tough in the US in the 90's.
When I first picked up my cassette of Black Tie/White Noise, I didn't like it at all. After a while it just started collecting dust in a box somewhere.
About a week ago, a good friend of mine mentioned how good this music video was, and so I checked it out. I really dig this, the video and reading the lyrics gives it such weight and power. Turns out my taste in music has changed since I last heard BT/WN
@420protoman The joke was that they change the ad so it wasn't the kid anymore....it was Steven. Thought that was funny...but only at that moment. Now it's just time not very well spent.
@evergrim too right to what justin biber he dont compaire with bowie and bowie is a real artist he writes and plays on his records he makes not like justin biber
@MsYesterday1 The song is about Bowie's half-brother who had schizophrenia and committed suicide in 1985; I've read that it is about the pressure several people can put on one person but considering his brother was schizophrenic it can also be interpreted as the voices inside the head of someone who's mentally ill telling him what to do.
@SuperAlanyoung You Must be right. My life changed the day I saw The Man Who Fell to Earth. It's difficult to express what I felt. Some of his best pictures taken by a guy called Shapiro, during the movie. Somebody knows where I could get them?
Actually no. When Bowie was age fifteen, his friend George Underwood, wearing a ring on his finger, punched him in the left eye during a fight over a girl. Doctors could not fully repair the damage, leaving his pupil permanently dilated. The colour of the irises is still the same blue, but since the pupil of the injured eye is wide open, the colour of that eye is commonly mistaken to be different.
Hello! I'm still writing to the radio for ask more Bowie songs, 'cause i think that too much young people don't know who his him, and we need some nice rock! someone can help me and do the same please? thanks, have a nice day.
I dont know what this song is about but his brother Terry was a schizophrenic and spent many years in Cane Hill Hospital and did commit suicide by jumping under a train after one unsucessful attempt in the 80s I think.
I think David composed this song for blaming lunatic asylum and psychiatric therapy, but also stupid whole human society in general who isn't able to help people with mental/social problem.
Such classic Bowie moments in this vid: the cold, stark atmosphere, the amazing manipulation of image. My favorite moment: he shouts, "WATCH OUT!" *just* as his hand flies up to block his vision.
It's just as good as the Placebo single cover where David is behind the band members, in the corner of the wall.... hiding on an album cover. Too rich.
Poor David, but i don't think he's depressed, amazingly, thank god for that. He talks about his step-brother quite a lot, The Man Who Sold The World was all about him too.
Actually, David's stepbrother Terry was schizophrenic, which is a problem in the family, so he stood at the top of the chapel at the institute he was at, and jumped. The, "They" David was probably referring to were the many voices of his brother's other personalities.
I wanted to draw a picture to go along with this song, like Bowie anime or something. It's sad, yea cause you can only be pushed so far, and then you can't take it anymore...... Oh that suit looks perfect on him.... Suits were made to be worn by David Bowie...who here agrees? Yea, and that hair style, well who does that anymore? Bowie ruled with that hair!!!!
show some respect, the man is a brilliant singer/songerwriter/actor/artist. If he was born not to wear clothes, then non of us were. We're not living in the garden of Eden stupid. He looks wonderful in a suit and fedora...by the way do you even know what a fedora is dummy? Your disrespectful, for god sakes the mans married. I don't think he would appreciate being a part of your sick and twisted fantasies. have a nice life! LOSER!!!!
Even though it was the song that caught my attention, I couldn't help but think damn that's a sharp suit...gotta get one like it, after seeing the video. That's how a suit should fit and be worn.
I've always heard that when he heard that his brother was threatening to jump off a building he ran to him to intervin and when he got there he found a crowd of ppl yelling " JUMP!", hence the name of the song. If it's true or not I can not say.
Wow, this song is amazing. Didn't know this one. What a hero. Sad story about his brother though. Still I've got to admire the way he puts it to music. ... It's got a really dark undercurrent which is really addictive.
Terry (db's half brother) died under a train in the 80's . Bowie wasn't there so the crowd baying him by saying "jump" story is not true. Terry did get the young David into music by taking him to a jazz club, which the trumpets and sax on Jump They say recalls.
Poor guy, who worked so hard for corporate America, only to be laid off by the very company that he toiled away for...So he jumped...A very good song for the economic situation that is going on now...
darkgardenia , the only voice of reason in the world full of schiso's & Placbos. I Got laid off by corporate america and wanted to jump. but I didn't. Although there are some who wish I would've

@420protoman The joke was that they change the ad so it wasn't the kid anymore....it was Steven. Thought that was funny...but only at that moment. Now it's just time not very well spent.

its sad the reason he wrote this song:(
AthenaScissorhands 1 year ago
@AthenaScissorhands
why did he write it?
MsYesterday1 1 year ago
@MsYesterday1 The song is about Bowie's half-brother who had schizophrenia and committed suicide in 1985; I've read that it is about the pressure several people can put on one person but considering his brother was schizophrenic it can also be interpreted as the voices inside the head of someone who's mentally ill telling him what to do.

0:53 does david bowie have 2 different colored eyes?
dayzq 2 years ago
yup!
gahan101 2 years ago
Actually no. When Bowie was age fifteen, his friend George Underwood, wearing a ring on his finger, punched him in the left eye during a fight over a girl. Doctors could not fully repair the damage, leaving his pupil permanently dilated. The colour of the irises is still the same blue, but since the pupil of the injured eye is wide open, the colour of that eye is commonly mistaken to be different.

Too rich.
somercet1 2 years ago 4
i know. i love david bowie and placebo. best solo artist and band. just sharing the love....
apathyfilledmonkey 2 years ago 2
Poor David, but i don't think he's depressed, amazingly, thank god for that. He talks about his step-brother quite a lot, The Man Who Sold The World was all about him too.
bonbon1995 2 years ago 5
Actually, David's stepbrother Terry was schizophrenic, which is a problem in the family, so he stood at the top of the chapel at the institute he was at, and jumped. The, "They" David was probably referring to were the many voices of his brother's other personalities.
silentwind69 2 years ago 6
I wanted to draw a picture to go along with this song, like Bowie anime or something. It's sad, yea cause you can only be pushed so far, and then you can't take it anymore...... Oh that suit looks perfect on him.... Suits were made to be worn by David Bowie...who here agrees? Yea, and that hair style, well who does that anymore? Bowie ruled with that hair!!!!
ElenaBlackRose 2 years ago 36
Clothes were made to be worn by David Bowie.
Which is unfortunate, because David Bowie was born not to wear clothes.
lovewithacapitalL 2 years ago 9
show some respect, the man is a brilliant singer/songerwriter/actor/artist. LOSER!!!!
ElenaBlackRose 2 years ago
Even though it was the song that caught my attention, I couldn't help but think damn that's a sharp suit...gotta get one like it, after seeing the video. That's how a suit should fit and be worn.

I've always heard that when he heard that his brother was threatening to jump off a building he ran to him to intervin and when he got there he found a crowd of ppl yelling " JUMP!", hence the name of the song. If it's true or not I can not say.
cosmo7652002 2 years ago
That's disgusting. And it could well be true. It happens. People are horrible.
If this particular story is true, I would kinda lose my trust in people, if I was in his position. What a cynic story. ... And a cynic song too..
00Ivanov 2 years ago 4
Wow, this song is amazing. Didn't know this one. What a hero. Sad story about his brother though. Still I've got to admire the way he puts it to music. ... It's got a really dark undercurrent which is really addictive.
00Ivanov 2 years ago 4
Terry (db's half brother) died under a train in the 80's . Bowie wasn't there so the crowd baying him by saying "jump" story is not true. Terry did get the young David into music by taking him to a jazz club, which the trumpets and sax on Jump They say recalls.
