It's the fucking music industry and how no one's allowed to use any of the music they own for anything other than listening to it on CD or paid-for mp3. Just because copyright laws can be strict at times, doesn't mean they really need to rain down on the slightest violation. In this case, I think it would technically be fair use. But even still, there should be restrictions on using copyright laws against people for the slightest alternative use.

It was absolutely fair use and did not break copyright. Unless the purpose of your video is to distribute music for free or to claim that you wrote the song, I don't think you've done anything wrong.

The record companies like to convince everyone that it is wrong to do this, but they're just being asshats and I think one day there will be a big issue made about this.

There are situations where you can even use the original music & still be perfectly legal- not if you're selling it though.

Sony music. There's bots that run through YouTube looking for audio tracks encoded with copywritten songs & artists. If anything belonging to a record industry is found, it mutes the video. Although, some industries allow for songs to be used, so long as an ad to buy the song appears throughout the video.

It's bullshit, but it's the way YouTube treads around the slightest possible lawsuit.
