Madonna broke the rules before anybody knew what the rules were! That's why she's a legend. Not being affraid to offend or take chances. She's amazing.

There is barely an applause. When Michael performed, for instance, people were moved to the point of being speechless. It's like a student who does a terrible speech and the teacher says: "come on, everyone, let's give our student a round of applause, he or she did his or her best". I don't think anyone enjoyed it.
Madonna that nite, was avant-garde. Seeping sexuality on stage, her performance was brilliant. This is when MTV was new, before fake mosh pits & stoned rockers incapable of speaking at the podium became the boring predictable norm of MTV awards shows
To appreciate how different & bold Madonna performance was. Look at the audience at the end, tuxedoes & formal wear. They dont know whether to clap or expect the cops to arrest Madonna on the spot for lewd behavior in public.
