Looking back at Robot Wars now, it seems a lot less "WOW!" than when I was a pre-teen and a lot more "What the hell are these people doing?" I have a feeling Clarkson was a bit underwhelmed by the final result too - why else would you quit a promising show after one series? Especially as he was growing tired of Top Gear at this point. (Craig Charles has since admitted to finding the show 'terrible' and only stayed because it was popular.)
@kisbie oh really? because my dad happens to be old freinds with craig charles and he actually said the most fun he had in his whole career were both red dwarf and robot wars, and jeremy did not quit, the producers wanted someone more energetic to present it, and to be honest this is right up his street, and he was actually fascinated by the house robots.
They cancelled it because the robots were becoming too good, apparently Chaos 2 flipped a robot in to the crowd. It stopped working when it landed but the makers decided to stop it there.
Yeah but robots like wheely big cheese, gravity and even the arena flipper have thrown robots into the crowd. They can't just blame one robot for that
Thrown out of the arena - not into the crowd. It's impossible thanks to the massive arena cage. Channel 5 changed the time and day of RW every single week, and numbers dropped drastically. Most feel this is why RW was cancelled, but their are other rumours circulating.
I think the material is Lexon. In a four way, they don't stop a fight when the robot goes over the fence until the end of the match or another 'bot goes out.
They only stop fights if the fence actually breaks, but they often edit that out. Which is a bit odd really... surely a robot outside the fence poses the same threat as having a broken fence...?
@petemccool lol what a load of crap!! there was a thick piece of bullet proof plastic in between the arena and the crowd so this cant be true and chaos 2 retiered after series 6 and there were 7 series. and anyway, in the last series, robots got chucked out almost every week! it got cancelled coz of the bad slot it was in and that it was on channel 5
@petemccool With respect, that's a complete load of bull. What actually happened was that Channel 5 won the bidding rights to the show from the BBC, and unfortunately thier idiotic scheduling department put it on at stupid times; which combined with poor promotion pretty much sealed the coffin in terms of ratings. Rather than look in the mirror they decided it was the show's fault and axed it. Sheer stupidity, especially considering they spent good money on it in the first place.
@dalekandjedi if money was an issue, they probably wouldn't have even started robot wars in the first place. they didn't always use the same arena anyway - if you look at series 1 and 2, then series 3, looks like they moved everything to a bigger building, and then series 4 looks like a whole new arena in the same building.. and then series 5-7 looks like yet another different location, and yet another new arena.
Funny that Norman Lovett narrated this, considering his Red Dwarf co-star started hosting Robot Wars in the next series.

no, its because of low viewing figures due to It being put in a poor slot (Sunday Lunchtimes) on Channel 5

Cassius Chrome didn't help

No, they'd have been better off by hiring Razer from Ian Lewis and using that as a house robot
kanenkitten 2 years ago 3
Chaos 2 never did that. No Robot ever did.

Matilda's flywheel also projected a small robot directly into a camera lens and smashed it!
The cameras are inside the arena, but are operated from outside the cage.

When that sort of thing happens they sometimes have to stop the fight for safety of audience. Also I heard that this fence is bulletproof.
