Eugenics, just as with any other philosophy, can be implemented with circumspection and sound logic, or it can be taken to an unhealthy and irrational extreme.

The key is that we must learn to be culturally competent, racially tolerant and intellectually honest with our human family while appreciating our many unique strengths and weaknesses.

I agree that we must beware of the "slippery slope" this man spoke of, but I also think an enlightened approach towards eugenics is possible.

In the late 1980's I was in a state hospital and knew a 18 yo girl who a psychiatrist talked into getting "voluntarily" sterilized by telling her she could stay in the hospital over night and it would be a nice break from the state hospital(which was a real snake pit from the 1950'2!) She went along with it. She was mentally ill, but also mentallu retarded.

I have always been so fascinated by Psychiatry and was thankful to find this channel. I tested in the 98th percentile on PSAT/SAT for science and am hungry to learn more. I am wondering why I was put on antidepressants years ago that completely, totally rendered me impotent beyond repair. Is that supposed to make me NOT depressed?!! I often pray for death because I am not happy and feel doomed and trapped and in spite of the fact that I have "been on" every single leading anti-depressant

But I was told that there are 3 types of Schizophrenia.. 1) That may occur but gradually fades & gets better, 2) that develops, stays stable & doesn't get any worse with the help of medication, 3) that does get worse & the patient deteriorates even with medication. That is what shrinks like to say to people. They fed the same garbage to me also. Don't let other people define your potential for you, or your "chances" at success. I was told I couldn't finish college, go to work, get married, that I couldnt be successful at any of these basic things. And according to them, if I was successful at any of these things, then they wanted to give credit to the shrinks and the drugs, which only led to my blindness and health problems.

One correction: Hitler was not elected Chancellor. That's a common misconception. He ran for President and was defeated by Hindenburg. Hindenburg later appointed Hitler as Chancellor.
