The P-47 was the first plane develop around the pilot. All other planes where develop around the engine. P - 47 was the toughest plane with out a doubt. Armor plate all around the pilot. 18 cylinder engine in front. 98 gallon of fuel per hour at cruise.
@Mr2wings WRONG! The P-47 was designed as an escort plane & not the 1st to be built around the pilot. Its shaped big because of the Engine (wide radial) & it's location of the Turbo-Charger (near the tail) & the associated duct work for turbo. The turbo was located in the back to balance the C.G. & the duct work going to it & from it is what gives the T-bolt its big, "fat" appearance. If the Corsair had the same turbo-charger location as the T-bolt than it too would have been Big too.
Because the 1st P-47s (Cs & Ds) lacked the range, they abandoned the escort roll & was adopted for close air support & ground attack. The Big radial & the duct work surrounding the cockpit (as it went to & from the turbo in the tail) "inadvertently shield" the pilot (but not by design). Its air cooled engine could keep running w/damage (unlike a liquid cooled engine). When the P-47N came at the end of the war (Pacific) it out flew the P-51 in fire power, speed & range.
@KHugh8 You must be joking! The best land based fighter? Most historians agree that the Mustang, P38 & Spitfire are way better than the Huge, slow climbing, wide turning P47 and that's only counting allied flown planes A few of the German planes were probably better too. The P47 Was a tough plane that usually got it's pilot back home safe, But far from the best WW2 land based fighter.
@4thstooge There is no way the P-38 and Spitfire were better fighters that the jug, especially the P-47D models with the "paddle blade" prop. The Mustang's biggest advantage was its range. Although most fighters could manuver better at low altitudes, very few could match the Thunderbolt's high-altitude capabilities, and NONE could match it's toughness and ability to absorb damage and bring its pilot home. P-47s, unlike P-51s fought when the German's skills were at their peak.
@4thstooge The P-47N was as cutting-edge as anything fighter the Allies used. The ME-262 was at the top of the heap. If you do a little more research, you will learn that the Jug stayed in service until the end of WWII (and well afterward)
@4thstooge I was really talking about the P-47M, and N models as far as speed and maneuverability. The strong R-2800 radial engine is mainly what made the P-47. Dont get me wrong, I love the Mustang, Spitfire, and the P-38, but the P-47 was very tough to knock down because of its size, and the air cooled radial engine where the Mustang, Spitfire, and the Lightning had liquid-cooled engines. They all each pretty much have their own advantages and disadvantages.
According to Robert S. "Bob" Johnson, the Thunderbolt could out-roll anything. Colonel Johnson used this specific tactic in defeating many of his 26 kills over Europe.
You have to actually see the plane in person to realize HOW LARGE this plane really is....it's unreal!!!! It is my favorite plane out of the several that my dad owns!
with all the mega million celebs we have today, i'm surprised that someone like John Travolta doesen't have one built from scratch. Blueprints are avaiable.
@danagal79 I thought about it but I don't have time as I'm always in the 707 being good looking with sunglasses on. I'm not a Celeb, I'm a pilot that does acting to be able to fly! I am rich though, and yes I could buy this plane. But my 707 has me by the balls, I just can't cheat on her. Ok bye, MR. TRAVOLTA

Someone should paint one to commemorate the Mexican Air Force 201st from The Philippines 1945. I know I'll probably get alot of negative ratings. F.Y.
Nice P-47. It's painted in the colours of Col.Dave Schilling of the 56thFg USAAF. It carried the name and noseart:"Ol' Hairless Joe". The P-47 flew with the USAAF,RAF,Russian, Mexican, French air forces. The 109 could hold it own with a P-47 in a dogfight and if the P-47 got low and slow it was in real trouble. Its strength was in boom'n'zoom tactics using energy and altitude in diving and slashing attacks then zoom climbing out again to regain altitude for its next attack. Classic warbird.
Thats a P47N, not a D, and I think Schilling flew a C model Razorback during the time of Bob Johnson. Schilling transitioned to 51's if I'm not mistaken. BTW, the 109 was no match for the '47. Read Bob Johnson's book "Thunderbolt"
great statement...of Yours....thumbs up...makes sense...yeah hopeless fallen when comparing these two birds...
I would prefer to be in the better aircaft with the US-markings..and thats the P 47 in allied colors...she only flew with US markings right. The Me109 had no chance against a P 47 Thunderbolt..even the engine bay of the P 47 is bigger than the whole Messerschmitt...lol...You are funny...I would prefer to be in a F16 instead of a Mig 21...same comparision..nonsense
The Thunderbolts took their losses too, my friend. A tough plane, absolutely. But the Me109 did stand a chance. The 109 was more maneuverable. Both great planes.
I dont who rated me that way...but I really do adore the german planes, they were god and I really do adore the german pilots, but they were outnumbered and the pilots of the allies were better trained.

@Mr2wings I suggest you read/watch:

P-47 Thunderbolt in action - by Larry Davis (2007)

History Channel's "Alexander Kartveli & his P-47 Design"

These top references make no mention of the pilot being a factor in the design.

You almost got it. It's a P-47M not a P-47N. The P-47N model had squared off wings. The P-47M flew faster and had a higher service ceiling.
