Actually they aren't because if you look on the under side of the hood there are plastic covers blocking the air flow to the engine. The are just for show.
haha...of course its going to start up in 50 degree weather...they only have slight issues in like 14 to the negatives...but theyll still start in that weather.
158 hp? try 142. the leak for the rear wiper is somewhat an easy fix, just open the hatch and take off the rubber boot, upper left between hatch and car. my washer line came apart there, just plugged them back together and it's good as new
Do you know what year Subaru's include the EJ22? I was considering a new OBS but now I'm now wondering if it'll hold up like the old ones. Should I find an earlier model or get a new one?
I think in 2000 they did away with the EJ22. I say find an earlier model with a 2.2 and stick with it if you want a car for the LONG haul. I don't know anything about the headgaskets on the newer EJ25s though, that was the problem with the earlier 2.5s.
I think all EJ25s had the problem up until '03, but it's sort of intermittent. Not all the cars had the problem... The updated Subaru headgaskets and the special Subaru coolant prevented repeat failures. The EJ22 is still superior because I have yet to see a 2.2 with a blown bottom end, but I've seen quite a few 2.5s with blown bottom ends. I think they usually came out of WRX's and STI's though...
Just picked up a '97, 176kmi., Outback. Sometimes I think DOHC is overkill for street engines, unnecessary complexity. But, if the owner is up for the maintenance, it appears to be capable of high miles. The gasket issue is a crap shoot. I've read one in seven had issues.
beautiful car man!

Subarus are well known to be good solid dependable cars when they are well taken care of. I want a '99 Outback Sport in fire-engine-red.

the covers can come off = functional

@fapposkid Really? I did not know that. And I have one.
SubieSean 1 year ago
..the scoop is functional. and the vents are as well.
they "go" to anything because the covers are on them under the hood..

The EJ22 in that Impreza is a better engine than the EJ25 in your new one. That car will probably be around much MUCH longer than your new one.

that EJ22 is an excellent engine.

Thanx dude. So the headgasket is the main prob with the EJ25 or is there more to it?
