Lol, it wasnt a copy. you shouldnt assume that, look at the front window design, look at the way the plane is tilted, listen to the sound. Is it the same? no.
Sure, it was SIMILAR, but not a copy. The fact that the plane had 4 engines at the back does not make it a copy at all. The il-62's wing set up was completely different. In fact, opposite to this planes.
@RainfulPhenix The revolutionary thought of 4 engines in the back was dreamt up by the British, once the Russians saw that, they wanted to make a same kind of plane. Look at the Concorde. The British had an amazing idea for a supersonic jet, very soon, Russia build an identical jet. They take the ideas of British Engineers, and they just build off of them, putting little changes to make it unique to Russia, but the airfoil, wings, maybe even engines, tail, are the same.
The tu144 ,again, is not a copy of the concorde. Tupolev 144, was in fact, a copy of its own, the T4 bomber, having the same nose and engine design. It looked more like a passenger version of the T4 bomber than the concorde. I would say the only copy was the 4 engine placement at the back. However, the wing design, the fuselauge and other parts were completely different. The cockpit and gear design would be different. The VC 10 may have inspired them, but they didnt copy.
Brilliant. I used to travel on those as a kid to Africa. Can you tell me what camera you had for that shoot. Im having problems trying to use h.d. Cheers.
My late dad worked for Varig Airlines in NYC. I used to watch the beautiful VC-10's of B.O.A.C. in the 60's. To me the most beatiful design in airliner history!
@MrJheberle Yes I agree. A beautiful looking aircraft out of its time - and still the best, even by today's standards. My dad used to work on the "Super VC10s" at Heathrow (Internal Block A) and he used to take me around to look at them in the hangar. WOW. Years later (1971) I bought one, but I had to put it together myself - Vickers stopped making them, but "Airfix" still continued.
@chasedrgc1223 Those things you see aren't actually fan blades but rather the inlet guide vanes, which don't move. For some reason the outboards are more visible here; all four engines have these vanes.
@TheNayNayRemix I've been around long enough, when these aircraft were new, flown several hundred times all over the world. All commercial jets back then had a dark sooty exhaust. It wasn't until pollution mandates came about that the smoke trail was eliminated.
@itsmegp46 VC10 was 2nd after concorde for the fastest commercial aircraft. The VC10 could fly direct from east african to london while the 707 had to tech stop because the engines weren't powerful enough in hot regions and it couldn't take enough fuel.
@itsmegp46 So by your philosophy that makes the 707 a better plane? Haven't you though about the fact that Boeing had a much higher manufacturing capacity than Vickers and also the fact that Vickers advertising campaign for the VC-10 left a lot to be desired? The reason BOAC weren't happy with the VC-10 is because it wasn't really suited to their routes. Other airlines were more than happy with it
@aspiringdrummer17 Bigger capacity has to do with consumer demand. If you can't supply it we can't fly it. Get it? It was all up to Vickers to advertise their plane, not Boeing's. If the VC-10 wasn't suited to BOAC's routes, then Vickers shoulder have designed a plane to suit their largest potential customer. Finally, there couldn't have been that many customers, only 54 planes were build over an 8 year period.
@itsmegp46 You seem to be rather passionate in your defence of the 707. It makes me wonder why you even bothered to watch this video in the first place, especially with your first comment claiming this video to be fake. You do realise how ridiculous you sound right? Not all turbojets emitted smoke. That depended on weather conditions. However you can clearly see the hot gases be emitted by the engines as well as a shadow directly underneath the aircraft.
I served on 10 Squadron RAF for 7 years(1985-1989/1993-1996) as cabin crew. I loved the airplane. The power on take off was awesome.I loved the sound on take off and landing. The sound will soon be a thing of the past.
You know, I see those quite alot in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the International airport but I always thought those were like the Russian built aircraft by seeing the dual engine mounts on either side. Like a Illyshin or something along like that variation of the Russian aircraft. (I apologize for the mispelling)
@jarhead565 there aren't that many VC10s around, but there are still a great many IL62s (the Russian lookalike). I actually suspect you have seen the IL62 in Minneapolis. If one only superficially looks at these aircraft they are easy to mix up. They are the only ones with 4 engines in that config.
@trident3b Superficial is right, at first glace they look similar but most Soviet aircraft were not copies of western aircraft except for the licensed copies they made of the DC-3 and the unlicensed copies they made of a B-29.
I was fortunate enough to have travelled on the Super VC10 in 1976 when they were transferred to British Airtours. Toronto, Mirabel,Prestwick,Manchester. & return.
extra landing & takeoff at Prestwick as Manchester was fogged in & had to turn back to Prestwick.. on the first take off from Prestwick I made a marker of when lift off was, 2nd take off pilot must have been peeved as he done it in 3/4 of the runway of the first takeoff. Beautiful aircraft, lots power & quiet in cabin...
As a boy I flew many times between USA and UK on Boeing 707s and DC 8s. Then came my first flight on a BOAC Super VC 10. From the airport window it looked like Sci-fi, just BEAUTIFUL. Then we got in and it was so much nicer than what we were used to. Then we accelerated and took off and we were amazed. This was like going from a School Bus (707 and DC 8) to a Ferrari. VC 10s were the best airliners of the time, and are still my favourite.
Soviets made a copy of this plane (VC-10) , and they called it Ilyushin IL-62. Like most of the things that has been made in Soviet Union (maybe except vodka and moonshine) , IL-62 was just quite impressive looking piece of junk that caused so many life loses.
At around 1.00 you can see the chap in the left hand seat lean sharply forward. I wonder if he is PF, and wanging the throttles fully forward to their stops, as there is no "staged spool-up" of the engines.
Amazing stuff. Thanks for sharing. This is a scene that won't be around for long. Enjoy the funbus whilst it's still here!
i dont understand why they let this plane still fly they stop concorde because of the two engines one next to the other one both sides. it is so beutiful but ...
@USERSPIKECYP That's not why they "stopped" Concorde, it simply wasn't economical in the long term to run it any more (and I'm sure that in their heart of hearts, even those who claim BA would have been able to run it for a few more years know it would have been no more than a few...)
@ATLRCFlyer IL-62s can climb quickly but pilots generally adopt a shallow angle so as to minimise turbulence from the wings which are over 3000 sq ft area and relatively larger than those on the VC-10. The power to weight ratio of the 62 is actually very good.
@av21031 Oh ok. I saw one video where the 62 just had troubles. But I also have no idea about the circumstances. Might be a crazy high density altitude at that airport that cut the performance short... I think those four tail mounted engines are quite impressive, if they weren't so loud...

I worked at LAX (for JAL) from 1971 until 1980 and the VC-10 was, perhaps, my favorite plane. @VIR092 believe it or not theyre turbofans because thos e are Rolls-Royce Conways the same engines that are used on 707s
ghettoperson257 9 months ago
@ghettoperson257 Whoops, yes they are, but very low bypass turbofans.
VIR092 9 months ago
@VIR092 yeah not much air bypass the combustion chamber thats why it gives the turbojet sound because its more than 15% air going into the chamber
ghettoperson257 9 months ago
@VIR092 Those seriously turbojets? How old is this bird?
creitz91 6 months ago
@creitz91 Nah, they have a small bypass ratio, low-BPR turbofans actually.

Beautiful plane, like the Tu-154.
VC-10 and TU-154 , best of British and Russian aviation.
Thanks for the video.

SupaaSaiyanDD9000 11 months ago
Awesome aircraft, and video. How did you ever get so close!
It's definitely loud. Louder than the Tu-154m or DC-10 as far as commercial aircrafts go, though those had a sweeter spoolup, maybe.
