A friend of mine served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during WW II and was attached to a Gurkha Regiment in Burma. He often said " If you went into a jungle fight and wanted the best chance of coming out alive, go with The Gurkha's"!

I went on a training exercise with the army and we had one of these hearts and minds seminars that the army gives booo.. Anyways one story that was told was of a section of Ghurkhas in Afghanistan, they got cut off from the main body of me and all but one were killed, this one Ghurkha held them off with every weapon that he could find until he himself was killed. I suppose technically they are not hired to fight wars but of course they are mercenaries in all but name and what is wrong with that? The Indian army has far more Gurkhas. If you were to join the French Foreign Legion you would be a mercenary and apply for French citizenship after 4yrs. My friends dad was a Gurkha officer, house full of mementos, they seem to arouse a lot of emotion in a certain type of Brit who probably regrets the breakdown of respect for authority in the UK.

Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, 31, of the Royal Gurkha Rifles, fired 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine to thwart an assault by Taliban fighters at a British checkpoint near Babaji in Helmand province last year.
The only weapon he did not use was the Kukri knife carried by the Nepalese soldiers, because he did not have it with him. At one point, once he ran out of ammunition, he even attacked a Taliban fighter with his weapon tripod. Ghurkas are our most valued ally for a reason!

A friend of mine served in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during WW II and was attached to a Gurkha Regiment in Burma. He often said " If you went into a jungle fight and wanted the best chance of coming out alive, go with The Gurkha's"!

Firstly the British Army is the best in the world, Its made up of all commonwealth countries. The Gurkhas are part of the British Army, the put there life on the line the same as a soldier from Cardiff, Hounslow, Newcastle, Glasgow and Belfast! they bleed the same as all of us. There Traditions are as old as many home grown Regiments.
The crime is that they serve the crown but don't have the same rights as a Eastern European migrant worker. Proud to have served with them!

I went on a training exercise with the army and we had one of these hearts and minds seminars that the army gives booo.. Anyways one story that was told was of a section of Ghurkhas in Afghanistan, they got cut off from the main body of me and all but one were killed, this one Ghurkha held them off with every weapon that he could find until he himself was killed. Just proves the value and courage of these men

I suppose technically they are not hired to fight wars but of course they are mercenaries in all but name and what is wrong with that? The Indian army has far more Gurkhas. If you were to join the French Foreign Legion you would be a mercenary and apply for French citizenship after 4yrs. My friends dad was a Gurkha officer, house full of mementos, they seem to arouse a lot of emotion in a certain type of Brit who probably regrets the breakdown of respect for authority in the UK.

@anwar296 my great uncle told me a story about the gurkhas while they fought the japanese in WW2...they told our troops to tie their shoe laces in a special way so while they are hiding in the forrest they could identify the enamy by touching the enamys boots come up behind them and slit their throats.
