Most people seem to believe that what Kaathe says is the truth, and almost all that Framp says is lies. But really, where IS the exact proof of this? The endings are REALLY ambiguous, and at first I even interpreted what happened in the "Link the Fire" ending as the process of ascension for the main character to become a god.
Thanks for this vid. I actually did this on my NG, i didnt even see the serpent in firelink lol i thought this was the way to go. And i had forgotten all his dialouge and was wondering about the damn pygmy
What if you answer "no" to his second question just before he slurps you up to the altar? Does he disappear forever or can you come back and agree so long as you haven't spoken to Frampt?
@HiryuuHonyaku I really don't know, I never tried it actually. In part 4, I recorded his dialogues if you answer "no" the very first time you meet him and he's like "okay, no biggies, I'll just wait here until you change your mind".
Dude... has ANYONE figured out what the Pendant REALLY does? There are too many things in this game that do not make sense. Like the boarded up archway in the Undead Burg that you cannot break with any weapon... but you can see that there is a path and staircase behind it that lead somewhere, but no one has figured it out yet! It probably is connected to the Pendant... that's my opinion anyhow...
@scott71785 Nope, the pendant is useless. The director of the game talked out of his ass for some reason (he's the one who said to pick the pendant as a starting gift or something. Was he trolling the entire Souls community or what?). Though I'm sure some locations and events of Dark Souls were rushed out and the devs didn't have the time to use some assets to put into the game, such as the pendant.
@scott71785 Also I read an interview in which a dev said that they had to cut an entire area from the game. It was supposed to be some sort of shortcut which linked Ash Lake to The Tomb of the Giants to Demon Ruins. Indeed, if you pay attention the scenery in Tomb of the Giants, you can clearly see the trees and sea from Ash Lake and the lava/Dome from Demon Ruins. Meaning there was supposed to be something to link all those areas.
@MichelKobayashi I see.... That thought did cross my mind that the "Use" of the Pendant is to keep people like me interested... but in reality it doesn't do anything. Shadow of the Abyss or whatever has the same pendant (I know you probably know this already). Chances are... most likely... the pendant does nothing. Especially since the text dump doesn't support many theories... A 10th cov would be the most likely thing, but the text dump doesn't support it...
@scott71785 Yeah, that sucks... I'm currently reading the text dump actually, so far no sign of any use of the pendant. I read some weird additional dialogues for Oscar of Astora though, he was able to join the player to fight monsters, and he also turned evil at some point and say "I will be the Dark Lord!" Weird stuff indeed... Maybe there'll be more to it in the next DLC? If there's a DLC that is, no idea if From Software are working on it. Let's hope so!
@MichelKobayashi I hope so too... Some people have been saying they don't want a DLC because then it means Dark Souls wasn't a "complete" game on release... but who cares! If the game is popular, and there is the possibility of a DLC location (like a boarded up archway in lower undead burg :P lol) then I think they should put it in!
@MichelKobayashi And yeah I read that about Oscar too... very strange. I wonder if you can use the pendant somewhere in the tutorial area... but after returning via snuggly? Hmm I wonder if theres something you can do with the pendant with Oscar right away in the tutorial..
It's just so strange lol! Why would the developer say that people will not find it on their first play-through? That leads me to believe that it CANNOT be found in 1st play. But then why did they say we should START with it?
@scott71785 I think it was the director of From Software who literally told the players in many interviews to pick up the Pendant... turned out the Pendant had no use whatsoever except for trading it to Snugly. Now my theory, and that's only my 2 cents, is that there was indeed some specific use(s) for the Pendant, like to unlock a 10th Covenant or whatnot, but then the developers had to cut many assets/areas of the game and the Pendant was one of them...
@scott71785 So I guess the director thought that the Pendant really was something important gameplay-wise, but the developers forgot to tell him that they didn't include it in the game? Yeah... I dunno, this is the only conclusion I came up with because it sounds logical to me.
@MichelKobayashi Sounds very possible that is the case. Bummer. Well, hopefully the director comes out at some point and says that... because you know as well as I do there are some people that will not stop looking for this secret...
@MichelKobayashi One good thing that would come from porting the game to PC version would be the ability to dissect the code of the game, and really be able to get down to the bottom of it.
to be honest, i haven't seek a plot development like this since the legacy of kain, where the god and his unwitting pawns he is in a desperate control of are trying to stop the one person who can mess their plan up by manipulating him into ruining his own future
so they organize all that so that gwyn kill us underastood m8.. but the mage in new londo also says that darkwraith are the worse fear of men so that confuses me too.
perhaps the mage lied. kaathe did say that gwyn sacrificed himself so his children can *shepherd* the humans. therein lies the concept of brainwashing, tyrannical gods
@grthym21 To kill the last descendant of the Pygmy. Remember, the player is the only human who cannot go hollow and can never really die. You're the last hope to cure the Undead curse and the Gods aren't that happy with that.
it's not that hard really... dark lord is bad. it's bad because the dark lord is down with the dark wraiths. the dark wraiths were sealed off by humans because they're evil and a grave threat to humanity. Ingward, or w/e his name is, explains this. the other gods had noting to do with that. it was never the flame that caused insanity and hollowfication - it was the dark that did. the flame helped keep the hollowfication away if anything.
@vids050 I agree with this. I think Kaathe is trying to trick the player. I think the player character is descended from the Pygmy but that doesn't mean that helping Kaathe is the right choice. The Darkwraiths represent evil and hate everything with a soul which is why their duty is to suck humanity from every living thing. By becoming the Dark Lord, you're basically going to destroy humanity which is the goal of the Darkwraiths.
@Divinesunone No no no! Kaathe is only fighting against the God's purposes. They only wan to keep feeding themselves with human's souls and so they need the fire kept alive! The goal of the Darkwraiths is to find them a new lord that can guide their people once again. The sacrifice of New Londo is intentional to keep the place far from the Gods sight. This is why I think the Darkwraiths are the good ones because they are actually fighting for something good but with many causalities tho.
gwynevere is just an illusion by gwyondolin. that means the illusion is asking you to use the lordvessel and meet frampt. so it is actually gwyondolin asking you to do this
You know, I have a pretty stupid theory, that Kaathe and Frampt are actually one serpent, with a head at each end. Would explain the smell too.. It is like some twisted Ouroborous. What do you think?
Does he offer you the option of joining the covenant after he tells you his opinion on the whole light the fire shit? 'Cause i'm a +2 chaos servant and I want to both unlock the option to join the covenant and give him the lordvessel without joining his covenant so I can open the lost izalith shortcut and join him after I have.
I think if you manage to have him finish off one with more than 50% of his health, he will be alive at ash lake and give the slab, and if you fall down and kill all of them before talking to him, he will claim that he is weak then he gives you his ring.
@MegaSchmoo Both games are set in the same universe. They aren't canon though, Dark Souls is not the sequel or the prequel of Demon's Souls, and vice versa.
Yet the Prequel states that the Age of Dark was a time of chaos where untold numbers of dragons roamed the lands until the Gods (Gwyn and co.) defeated them and brought us to the Age of Fire.
Lordren is the only city filled with the Hollow. Outside of Lordren, there are human cities (and filled with normal ppl I hope): Berenike, Catarina, Astora, Balder, Carim, Vinheim and a far away land in the East. They all sends adventurers to become Undead to explore Lordren.
@Colliecool No, the Age of Dark came AFTER the Dragons had been defeated, but Gwyn clinged to his Age of Fire, and forced it to continue, and by doing so he brought the curse of the Darksign upon humanity.
So you are the furtive pigmy, or you are suppose to become the furtive pigmy, the fourth lord?? or is the pigmy your progenitor, the progenitor to men??? i dont understand
@tadeuvi According to Kaathe, all mankind comes from the Pygmy and you are part of its legacy. Kaathe implies you're not the first who tried to kill Gwyn when he said "They failed me, every last one of them". Becoming the 4th Lord means bringing back the "Age of Dark" aka the "Age of mankind". In short, I guess you cure the Undead curse and give a middle finger to the Gods (Gwyn and co.) Now this is all speculation of course, nothing in the game clearly says this.
@MichelKobayashi From always does this,it was in des and now in dks,the good guys are all misled and serve something they shouldn't and the bad guys are revealed to be good through dialogue.
was the same with sorcerers knowing the maker was the old one and the same with darkwraiths,im assuming that they attack humans as well because they went hollow/4 kings were corrupt by gwyn.
actually... kaathe is lying about, or rather people have the wrong idea about what the "age of mankind" actually is. you join the darkwraith covenant through Kaathe... the darkwraiths are, according to Ingward "the enemies of man, and any living thing with a soul". would a person seeking to put man in power (which is what people think the age of mankind is) be the leader of a covenant said to be the enemies of mankind? no.
@vids050 You can't tell who's lying or not. The game doesn't give you enough information about the story to make such jugdement. It's open to interpretation, you side with whoever you THINK is right.
yeah... but ingward would have to be lying too, and he has no reason. he's one of the people who sealed new londo... it wasn't gwyn or any of the other 'gods'.
so basically, we have one thing confirmed for sure - the darkwraiths are NO GOOD for humans (man). so this age of man will not be one for human to be in power, as kaathe is for the darkwraiths and obviously the dark lord fails under the same kind of being.
and the new linked fire will go on forever, i believe... considering hat it has the lord souls reunited and linked. thus, i believe frampt and company are more believable. the reason people are SO suspicious is because of gwyndolin anyway... who they think will be the one left in power... as they ignore the fact that he too can be killed lol... meaning he won't necessarily be in power even if you don't kill him. either way, linking the fire is clearly the "good" ending.
Right after Kaathe says "They fail me, every last one of them", he then says "I am certain you will prove different". I think he is talking about previous humans that have met Kaathe and tried to do as the player does.
indeed... others who tried to rise up and become the dark lord. they didn't have what it takes as they were not the chosen one. the player IS the chosen one in reality (though there were other candidates). kaathe is trying to get the player to do his bidding basically. he talks to you like it's for you and your birthright and such, but his comment clearly shows he wants you to do this "for his own reasons". he IS evil after all... down with the darkwraiths. enemy of man and such.
@vids050 I think that the dark lord ending is good because the fire causes the curse of the undead, and if you link the fire, you are basically extending the age of fire like Gwyn did. Because of the curse, most NPCs go hollow or mad, and you have to kill them, so being immortal is not that good if all people will suffer this until the end of world.
@MichelKobayashi I am actually confused at the moment on what they call a god in dark souls. They never refer to Gwyn, Nito, etc. as gods but rather lords. They do call Gwyndolin a God and also somewhere they say that Gwyn gave his power to the gods. This makes me believe that gods are separate entities from the lords. And Yes You are the 4th lord. One of the Pygmy's descendants is predicted to be the Dark lord aka the Lord of Mankind.
@MichelKobayashi I'm not sure. Kaathe's soldiers (Darkwraiths) are evil and the sealer in New Londo states that the Darkwraiths hate everything with a soul and that includes mankind. It's no wonder that their duties consist of murdering people and draining them of their humanity. The murderous Kirk served Kaathe. When The Age of Fire begun, the prologue states that it brought LIFE AND DEATH. I'd imagine with it fading, the undead curse came. Starting the fire again makes everything normal.
then it turns out it's an illusion and u hear gwyndolin challenging you and anor londo turns dark.but i still don't get it what's going on there. what do u mean ?
@SuperFreezman The way I see it, the Illusion was created to give you a sense of heroism and lead you in the "Right" direction. If what you were doing was right, why would you need to follow such a big lie? Why would they need an Illusion to direct you?
Kaathe is like an outcast. He hides within the Abyss and gives you a fairly direct story of your past. He has clearly been shot down by Frampt and the others. I can't remember the story 100% but I just find his side of it more believable.
@SuperFreezman I'm trying to remember important story aspects, but I generally believe going the Dark Lord route is the correct route... Not necessarily the good route, but the TRUE route.
Most people seem to believe that what Kaathe says is the truth, and almost all that Framp says is lies. But really, where IS the exact proof of this? The endings are REALLY ambiguous, and at first I even interpreted what happened in the "Link the Fire" ending as the process of ascension for the main character to become a god.

indeed... others who tried to rise up and become the dark lord. they didn't have what it takes as they were not the chosen one. the player IS the chosen one in reality (though there were other candidates). kaathe is trying to get the player to do his bidding basically. he talks to you like it's for you and your birthright and such, but his comment clearly shows he wants you to do this "for his own reasons". he IS evil after all... down with the darkwraiths. enemy of man and such.

@vids050 He alone longs for the age of dark? You mean, him, a dozen other primordial serpents and Frampt as well. Check the Dark Lord ending.

@MichelKobayashi Maybe so, but I like the way you put it.

@rpranda Did you talk to the serpent in Firelink Shrine beforehand? If you did, Kaathe will not appear in the abyss.

I believe Kaathe. I think Frampt is somehow linked with Gwyndolin, and we all know what's going on there.

@jjrudki
then it turns out it's an illusion and u hear gwyndolin challenging you and anor londo turns dark.but i still don't get it what's going on there. what do u mean ?
SuperFreezman 3 months ago
@SuperFreezman The way I see it, the Illusion was created to give you a sense of heroism and lead you in the "Right" direction. If what you were doing was right, why would you need to follow such a big lie? Why would they need an Illusion to direct you?
Kaathe is like an outcast. He hides within the Abyss and gives you a fairly direct story of your past. He has clearly been shot down by Frampt and the others. I can't remember the story 100% but I just find his side of it more believable.

@jjrudki
so they created the illusion because they were feared that he may know the truth and become the dark lord.....interesting undead
SuperFreezman 3 months ago
@SuperFreezman I'm trying to remember important story aspects, but I generally believe going the Dark Lord route is the correct route... Not necessarily the good route, but the TRUE route.
