Linux on the other hand was a complete re-write of the kernel from the ground up to create a "unix-like" system for the PC. GNU provided the tools and applications which accompany the kernel, the full and correct name therefore being "GNU/Linux".

Hope this helps people understand the history in some way.

1) its designed to work on as much hardware as possible. there's no way they can have drivers for everything. i've always had driver problems (10+ years as a programmer, i've used both linux and macs, i only switched to mac recently) a) Dell Precision M70 - no working nvidia quadro driver b) hp dm4 - sketchy wifi driver

@MapleFlame4500 also the main reason why any system gets more viruses than the other is because of popularity. there is an exponentially larger number of windows users compared to mac. therefore, malicious coders make more windows viruses (they can affect mroe people at once). next is mac os x, they get less viruses because they are a smaller user base. even smaller is linux, which is why they are the least affected.

Apple is just a popular brand. I'd rather spend my money on an DSLR Canon camera, rather than a Mac, especially now that I know PC's run MUCH MORE faster than Mac's. pc's jacket changed after about 2 years, and the new jacket kept him warm, safe, and stylish, pc enjoyed doing everything his fans expected of him, and more in his new attire.

mac's jacket was rediculously expensive, and noone could afford it, not to mention he could only do very limited things while wearing it.

linux's jacket couldnt find any of her drivers, so she went back to the shop community, where she still waits for someone to get back to her on a solution to fix it.

tried almost 20 different linuxes and none of them worked normally. Most of my hardware wont be accepted. One day i installed linux and had huge problems rmoving it again. Had some live cds. Some of them worked some not and the ones that worked dindt work another time. I dont understand linux

@webgier it's not easy to start anything new. I suggest you to try ubuntu or mandriva. and read a lot about how linux works. these two distros will work mostly fine, but you need to be prepared to face a bit of code once and then.

even so, my netbook is running ubuntu for like 1 year and a half without needing it. but before the new version of it I had to learn a lot about the linux to get used. now I feel able to install almost any distro and to find solutions when necessary.
