Moses Hogan should take great pride in this interpretation. First off, what a great approach! The tempo is slow yet inconsistent, which really brings out the musicality of this piece AND this group. Secondly, what excellent vowels you have! This is exactly how I would have instructed my students to pronounce "Elijah". With a faster pace, I would implement a little more "j" for that soulful feel, but in this tempo, it's perfect. This is simply brilliant. Your students should be honored.
i am priviledged beyond belief to have been a part of this. i remember feeling the energy through our hands and just feeling the emotion of this piece and rocking it out! thank you Mr. Grant and Mr. Techau for teaching me so many lessons and for inspiring me to want to do what you did: make a difference through music in many people's lives. love you my SHHS choir family! GO SMOKY!!!!
I was about to be like "Hey! SPEED UP!" lol, but all in all, that was a great performance! I'm not gonna lie, the overpronounced K's in Rock were a little irritating, and the holding hands thing is something new to me...
The tempo will probably catch most Moses Hogan followers off guard but what this director did with these kids and the soul coming from the alto section is truly admirable. Great rendition. Check out Overton high's version. It's the usual tempo but It's Still great for a High School choir. Props to Dr. Grant!!
This was amazing . . . !! Absolutely unique - Kudos for daring to be different !! Only thing I can say about this video is the pronunciation of the words !
Awesome work seniors, this is an exceptionally hard piece to perform at the college level. I've hard many versions and this is by far the best version I've heard.
keep up the hard and leader, your director knows what he's doing and wants!!!
i loved it =] gave it the feel it needs if it was a lil faster it would have been perfect for me atleast but GOD never expected to hear a high school choir sound like this
Wow, Very nice!! Finally, Its nice to see another HS choir singing "Not like a HS choir" lol. I go to RMHS, we are doing this piece, except faster, but your tone is awesome and MATURE, just like us!
@#$!%!!!! THEY SOUNDED GOOOOD!! Now, no one can say anything negative about this! Especially when the tenors were saying Hallelujah Jesus and the tenor 2's were singing too, it sounded like drums were playing! LOL My heart was beating fast!! I recently performed this, it was not this slow, but ya'll KILLED IT!!! GREAT JOB!
My choir is doing this song right now, and this piece was absolutely beautifully done! At first I was skeptical with the slow pace, but the speed up at the end was just amazing! GREAT JOB!!! ^_^
wow that was really good. at first i was thinking how the heck are the sop 1s gonna do the wailin part so slowly and not pass out from air loss or go sharp but they sped it up and it was so cool! good job guys
This is a very good version of this song. I remember back when I was at NCSU we actually stepped up the tempo of Wade in the Water and when we were auditioning new choral directors we did it our way and he was surprised by how good it sounded. I have nothin' but props for this version! Go head with ya bad selves! ^_^
Outstanding! I'm a closed minded person and at first I didn't like it because of the tempo. I'm from Bedford, OH. and our choir is doing that piece now.
The ending and the comments from others changed my opinion on your interpretation.
I wish I were apart of your choir!!!
By the way, where are you guys from?
And are they holding hands? All choirs could learn something from you guys.
Im a music major at the University of North Texas in Choral Music Education and I have to say this is the most Dynamic performance of this piece I have heard. Firstly, your women are astounding! so rich and round with a good balance of bright and dark. Great Interpretation!
I go to Southeastern Louisiana University and we just sang this song. I was so happy we did this song and everyone was so proud of us, but the way yall did this piece is phenomenal. The dynamics, emotion, and communication coming from such an amazing choir... it's a blessing to listen to yall. Thank yall so much for doing this piece.
Oh my gosh. I remember listening to this in the front row with mens choir last year and feeling my heart skip a beat or two cuz of this. I showed this to my host family in Japan and they absolutely thought it was amazing.
WOW! When I first started listening, I was thinking "Are you kidding me?!" (about the tempo), but it worked SO well! The most original performance of this song I've ever heard, and highly entertaining! You can sense and hear the emotion in the voices of these young people, which is amazing! Well done!
Oh my gosh, last year my concert choir did this song, and we did it fast. I've never heard it this slow before. I have to say the first minute or two of this I was like "speed it up!".
But when it ended. I LOVED IT. Your Sforzandos were great, and you can almost hear every part, which is a tough task to do in such a big choir. Tenors were amazing, very stong.
Oh my goodness this choir is amazing and i hope i become this good.... next year im going to be in smokey hill and im going to sign up for choir. but one question since im in a auditioned choir in laredo how much different are the choir songs that you all sing... i am very confused.
but this song is supposed to be quicker, 100bpm, right?
lol, it was still amazing. it must've been hard to do it slow, but it's really REALLY good
i know what you mean about the "proudness" thing, lol. i come from a school that got the Gold w/ Distinction award at NYSSMA so many years in a row (lol Francis Lewis Choir FTW) so i kinda get the vibe
it's always good to be proud of your choir, or your school in general.
you guys are absolutely mindblowing here, keep it up :D
I am in awe..very small things I noticed but overall this was excellent . the slower tempo really helps to hear some of the lush chords. I think some of the singers were overdoing the K's on rock but I love the womens voices Lord at the end of the phrase "Comin up Lord" Amazing . Alto's sound beautiful..Good Job Tenors and basses as well
y is it so slow? the choir that im in grandview's camerata choir did it for grand junction it was faster way way way faster but yalls version is realy good you can tell what yall are saying
The slower tempo is probably what makes this so refreshing, because most of us are used to the Moses Hogan, fast-paced version. This is a great, artistic interpretation.
oh my dear lord! you can hear this is going to be an amazing performance from the opening. Even thought the song moves in a slower tempo the sound travels like a wave very constant and getting bigger and bigger.
This is the best recording of this song on youtube by a HS Choir. Congrats, and by the way this is coming from a professional. Much too slow but everything else for the most part was there. The movement puts nice touch oin this song. Still the speed angers me, but still the best.
gave me CHILLS.
