Great job SK... You know you are doing something very good when Bomberguy gives you Kudos! Keep up the great work, and I really hope we will see more from you in the future. Keep the faith, and somebody might offer you a job that you won't be able to refuse, and maybe allow you to become reasonably well-to-do~~~
A couple people have commented now on doing this as a career. Actually, that's what I've been doing for the last 10+ years. It's a strange way to pay the bills but it's been working so far.
If Peter Jackson happens by, I'm freelance and ready to work on your WW1 feature when you get around to it. Come on, re-make "The Blue Max". You know you want to. :)
A remake of The Blue Max by Peter Jackson? Sounds cool. I'm sure he'd happily do it. Who'd be in it? I can see Kate Winslet or Keira Knightley as Countess Kaeti. And Alan Rickman as Count Von Klugerman maybe? Any suggestions for Stachel or Willi Von Klugermann? But don't film it in Ireland. The 1966 version is so obviously Ireland rather than Northern France. But of course people didn't travel as widely in 1966.
You've made Flyboys into a better movie. It looked so awful I deliberately avoided it. But this is very clever and your editing is quite remarkable. Thought of becoming a film editor?
I have not seen Flyboys but Blue Max was my favourite film for years....almost 40 years ago!... You have done an excellent editing job, you have a lot of talent.
Thanks for the support! I am thinking of doing a slide show of my progress make sure you stay in touch with me so you can see it. I finished the rudder and I have completed one side of the fuselage so far..thanks again
Hi N-17 Flyer.. Best of luck with your Nieuport replica! I would really love to see some video of it if you could please share it with it. I have been a wooden-boat builder for decades, with a real passion for WW One aircraft, and have been working on a large model of a Sopwith Camel lately. I sure wish I could find a restorable motor, so that I could build a full-scale replica some day!
Thanks for the support! I am thinking of doing a slide show of my progress make sure you stay in touch with me so you can see it. I finished the rudder and I have completed one side of the fuselage so far..thanks again
Yes, it's George Peppard. The film came out around 1966. The script writers messed up the story, though. Stachel wasn't killed at the end of the book. Jack O. Hunter wrote a sequel during the early 1980's, but I can't recall its title. It was about Bruno Stachel redeeming himself during WWII.
The intention is not a derision or of either of the two films nor as a personal critique (though I do have strong opinions on how each film chose to depict the time period).
Each film's lack of detailing the enemy pilot's characters inspired me to do this in the first place. By joining the two films, viewers get the benefit of seeing well-known characters fight in the same sky.
Bruno Stachel winning at the end seemed to end up working better editorially with the event footage available.
I love Flyboys. What's more, although they did rather ham up the dogfights,it's a lot more historically accurate than The Blue Max, Aces High or any of the others, especially with regard to the planes themselves. No disguised tiger moths in this one.
Not really. Flyboys used WAY too many red triplanes (which had not even been fielded at that point in the war). That was done largely to make it easy for an "aviation uneducated" audience to tell the French from the Germans. Did you also notice the 7/8 scale SE-5 with the Lycoming engine?
They both did what they could with what they had. The Nieuports were a nice treat though.
You're right about that. Not only too many red triplanes; too many triplanes full stop. It's a pity really, because it will probably be a long while before anyone makes a WW1 flying film with such good CGI again. I love Flyboys, but don't understand why, having gone to all that trouble to make the planes convincing, they didn't go the whole hog and do the right types and colours. And the engines on the Nieuports shoud have spun. Maybe they'll do a revised version with the flaws ironed out.
@Squiremonkey, Baron von Richthofen according to squadron/signal publications flew a partially red Dr.1 The aircraft had a red tail and upper wing and wheel covers. The rest of the aircraft was painted olive green. None of his Aircarft were ever painted all red. Popular folklore ofcourse tells a different tale however the Historians all agree on this point the plane was not all red.
I believe your publication you mentioned is actually referring to his 152/17 Dr.1 which sported that paint scheme. Different sources, different info. I guess.
Monkey eh? Gee thanks for being so mature in your response. Let's agree to disagree and leave it at that.
MvR flew a number of tripes. One was the olive/red combo. However, Dr.1 425/17, the one he was flying on April 21st, was all red. So whatever historians you're refering to don't know what they're talking about, because the ones that I've read all agree 425/17 was red.
@ CFschr1s, George Peppard did not portray the Red Baron, Manfred Richthofen aka the red baron is portrayed briefly in the film by another actor. Oh and for the history buffs, Richthofen never flew an all red triplane and most of his aerial victories were accomplished in an Albatross (also not shown in the film)
Indeed. Carl Schell plays Von Richthofen in an amusing although fanciful interaction with Peppard's character in the film.
As you mentioned, Richthofen's earlier mounts were variations of the red design. However, his Dr.1 triplane (serial number 425/17) in which he finally met his demise is historically considered to have been painted all red.
The hard core debate seems to be what shade of red. Hehe.
SK... Didn't the *Red Baron* fly an all black triplane once they finally got them? As I recall, he then flew a camoflaged *normal* Tripe until he became famous, and then decided that a bright red plane would spook the enemy, as well as letting the German AA gunners know who he was, so they wouldn't shoot him down by accident. This all happened before the advent of reliable radio communication, so mostly nearly everyone had no good idea what was really happening at any particular moment.
Richtofen got his start as a gunner on a Gotha bomber, eventually joining the squadron lead by Oswald Bolke, the father of air combat, his first plane was a camoflaged Albatross D II, after gaining a reputation, and Bolke's death, he became squadron leader and had his Albatross painted in bright red, he was later shot down and the plane was destroyed, he got his Fokker DrI after recovery and had it painted red after a short while, it had nothing to do with AA gunners, and was red when he died.
Simon, in our modern view the planes may seem antique or bizarre. In the eyes of these brave young men, the new winged machines were state of the art technology.
In these early days of WW1, aerial combat was a mental throwback to the knights of old, with pilots mounting flying steeds in this new and uncertain industrial age. Interesting times for sure.
this is so Perhaps you should make a film with Flyboyz and Aces High fighting along each other. or Blue max vs Aces high. How long did it take you to make this film?
that was very good, french fighters don't stand a chance against an albatros!

That was better that the original flyboys. I have paid money to see movies that were not as good as that (Richtofen vs. Brown).
There were numerous script ideas for a 2nd Blue Max but sadly they never panned out.
